Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.

Another vent about lazy, ignorant tack shop employees - long!

    I've really never had a problem at Home Depot - maybe we have some good stores here. If I ask for help, I always get it, though sometimes have to wait for the person to finish helping another customer. When they help me, they make sure I have found whatever I need before they leave - unless I just ask them to point me in the right direction. I've walked out of other hardware stores because there was no one there remotely interested in helping me.

    As far as tack stores, I guess we're lucky in that we have two stores where the people are friendly and know where things are. The only downsides to those stores (both of them) is that if you have to order something that's not in stock, it takes a LOOOONNNNNGGGG time to get there. The last time it happened, it took so long I thought they had forgotten me and just bought it from a friend who ended up having an extra. Then had to tell them (3 weeks later) that no I would not be purchasing the item because it took too long and I had found it elsewhere. I'm sure they weren't happy about that, but that's life.

    I will say, the one place I've found that seems to have people really into customer service is the Disneyland area. Helpful, friendly people abound and they're all about making sure you have a great time. We could all learn a lesson there.

      Geeze ESG - I can't believe this has 5 pages. I just want to say that, as an eye witness to the OP, the "snail girl" really does exist.

          I think that the name "snail girl" is a bit offensive. Right now I'm studing fish on an island surounded by coral reefs (i.e. snail heaven) and I can tell you there are a lot (I mean *a lot*) of perfectly decent, hard working snails out here. They might be slow, it's true but they really can't help it. It's hard to move around with your house on your back trying to eat algae at the same time you know?

              I've never had a problem with "service" in our local shops. The one closest to my home is owned by a former instructor of mine and most of her employees ride at my old barn. The biggest issue I have is pricing and availability of of stock.
              There are 3 English shops in the general area. The one in the immediate suburb of the city, near my house is the most expensive. They are convenient and located in a fairly pricey strip mall. They usually have a decent selection, but NOTHING is a bargain. I know that the employees are knowledgable and helpful. The next further out is a bit more reasonable in price. They carry some more moderate brands and often are a few $ lower than Shop 1 on the same item. Service is also good, though they have fewer employees and I don't persoanlly know any of them.
              The third place is much bigger than the other two, well outside "town" and has good service but they never seem to have the size/color etc in stock. I bought an ATH last year and went to all three before buying from Dover. I prefer to buy locally if I can and started at the shop aound the corner. All three shops wanted me to buy a GPA. On my budget a GPA was out of the question, besides I've never tried one that FIT me. Shop one was helpful and had the ATH in my size for $189. Shop 2 had no ATH at all. I tried an Owens and it didn't feel comfortable. Shop 3 had 2 ATH's in stock, both size HUGE. The price was $130, BUT they would have to be ordered. Since I knew my size from store 1, I said OK let's do it. I then find out that a price change (read inrease ) is pending and owner isn't sure what the price will be. There is no charge or obligation for the order so I proceed. (This place is 45 miles from home and if I have to pay $189, and wait 3 weeks I might as well have bought the ATH from my friend around the corner.)
              A month goes by and no phone call...My barnmate who was also looking for an ATH and I go back. Guess what? They are there! Barnmate's fits, mine doesn't. I don't buy but learn that the price is $159 and at least now the shop has a "normal" size ATH in stock.
              I go home and order ATH (black/clear) from Dover for $129 plus shipping and it's here in 4 days. And no one at Dover tried to get me into a GPA!

                That's become the Shop owners nightmare..try it on in the store so you can order it elsewhere...While most have good intentions and really would like to buy from the shop we had a very diligent few who used us mercilessly for just that purpose...couldn't refuse to help because boots, helmets and (THE WORST) blankets were kept in the stockroom or basement..you spend an hour running flights of stairs with every conceivable blanket/Turnout/Brand/Size/Color option with a smile on your face, knowing this B!^@* is NOT gonna pay retail...meanwhile it's a Saturday Before The Show and every single Firstime Short Stirrup Mommy with NO kid with her insists on The Whole Package..helmet, boots, jods,shirt,coat garters gloves...
                I worked hard, I worked good, I worked cheap..until doing what I loved turned into "Oh, No, not again"

                  I agree with Irish Ei's about the problem of customers trying our items at the tack store with the intention of placing a catalog order to save money. It is unfair to waste an employee's time if that's your intention. Hopefully most people don't do that.

                  I am still laughing about ESG's post regarding "Snail Girl" though. A number of years ago we had a chain called Dart Drug that was inhabited with snail clerks. Dart had the habit of not putting price tags on their items, so when you got to the check-out (assuming it was staffed), it never seemed to fail that the cashier needed to leave for a "price check". The clerk would disappear into the nether reaches of the store. The disappearance lasted so long, that one suspected that outpatient surgery or a cruise vacation was in progress. Perhaps a kidnapping was in progress. I don't know, but I learned to stop any price checking by saying "Oh, then I don't want that item!"

                  So ESG, my sister from Texas is in town. She rides hunters and I bet she might know this tack shop and perhaps has met Snail Girl. I can't wait to ask her all about it. Maybe that explains why she comes here for her tack shopping.

                    At Lowe's, they recognize me in Winchester. After spending a year, building my own farm, acting as general contractor, that meant I spent a LOT of time there.

                    My rule is, you load it ONTO my cart if I ask you, you load it into my truck when I leave. I stand and watch and pay.

                    Now, the Home Depot in Leesburg is the crappiest store I've ever been in. They are ill stocked (no WAY contractors are buying there), lazy, don't ask if I want help and I had one kid tell me it would be 30 minutes before a loader would be out there.

                    I went, got my truck, came in and said, I need a loader. Waited about a minute, went around a corner to offices and said "I need some help loading my truck NOW". And THAT was the nicest man I've ever dealt with at HD. He came out in his tie and loaded my concrete and lumber himself.

                    I told the kid, "someone here will be unloading this cart, one way or another. Either into my truck or back onto the shelves after you refund my payment".

                    I love Lowe's. Own Lowe's stock in fact.

                    I try to buy in local tack stores, and actually do most of my transactions in person, at a store. I have to admit the tack shop in P'ville hasn't really endeared themselves to me though.

                      Irish Ei's and Ironwood Farm, I really did want to buy locally. I am on a tight (very) budget and the extra $60 between Dover's price and my neighborhood shop is quite meaningful to me. Had the shop 45 minutes away had the helmet in stock at the price on the ticket for the size 8 1/2 ( ) $135.00, I'd have bought it there. I DID order one and no one called to say it arrived. I only found out about it when my barnmate and I made another road trip to her shop. Barnmate ordered one too, and she never got a call either. Also, at the time of the order, she couldn't assure me what the price would be and $ is a concern here.
                      When I was seeing ATH's in SLT and Dover for between $100 and $180 (depending on color, material variations) to find the $189 tag on the one that SLT has for $110. and Dover has for $129 seemed too dramatic a span.
                      I bought several Christmas gift and other items in the local shop. I do prefer to support folks in my community who are taking risks to run a business. I know how hard is is to stock a store to please everyone. I really did start out helmet shopping hoping to buy local.

                        Linny, I don't think Irish Ei's and I meant any criticism of your experience. I think we all know people who go to that tack shop and try out a saddle, an expensive jacket, or some other item. They will have the clerk running, ask a million questions, then leave and order the item elsewhere. These are the same folks who may buy an expensive outfit, wear it once, and then return it to the department store.

                        I do lots of catalog shopping myself because it can be much cheaper, particularly with free shipping and no sales tax. If I do go to a tack shop and they can't get me the item I want, I certainly feel no guilt about ordering it from a catalog or on-line. And if I had the experience ESG had, I would not darken the door of said tack shop unless I was totally desperate.

                          I would love to buy locally, but if the tack shop has the philosophy that "whatever we have is EXACTLY what you need" I will have to buy online. Last week I went to the local tack shop, which carries Beval saddles. I asked to try a Carmel Devon in a size 15 1/2. They said the smallest size for that saddle was a 16", and that they didn't have one, but the 16 1/2 they had should be fine for me. (I weigh 98 lbs.) Does this mean that the Beval.com website is wrong? I then asked which other manufacturers made saddles in a 15 1/2 or 15 3/4 and was told that "no one makes those." Wow! A LOT of web sites are wrong! If they had offered to get a saddle in my size I would have been willing to wait. As it is, I'm probably better off shopping online, or finding another tack shop that will be more helpful. I feel sorry for tack shop owners because they can't match online prices. They can offer better customer service, but usually don't.

                              Generally you don't get help in my tackstore unless you have "an account" or unless you come in wearing your paddock boots, chaps, and spurs. Who the helll wears spurs to drive??!!!

                              If its a cheaper version they carry it in limited sizes. If they have what I need in my size and the price there is equal to or less then the online price plus shipping I will buy it there.

                              In fact, I went there looking for a saddle. First I was told I couldn't take home the used saddles when I was just looking for a saddle. Then I was told I could take them home when I was just looking for a used saddle. Then I as told that I couldn't buy the crosby with the round cantle because I wouldn't place at shows due to its round cantle. huh?

                                The closest tack shop to me used to be an immense pain in the ass. However, the manager left and opened a VERY high-end tackshop down the road, in direct competition. Now, the old place is great. They still hire very young adults, who don't always know what they're doing or would rather gossip. But when I asked about the ATH long oval, they ordered all three sizes so I could choose from them to see what fit. I was quite pleased.

                                Unfortunately, they're pretty small and the place is packed. But I was really impressed with the change in customer service and will go back soon.

                                Another tack shop is opening in Westminster soon, and I'm interested to see what they'll carry and how they'll fare.
                                Life would be infinitely better if pinatas suddenly appeared throughout the day.

                                  Back when I taught riding lessons, I sent an ADULT student to the tack shop to buy a plain 5" eggbutt snaffle for her horse (the uber-fat loose ring she had wasn't doing her any favors, and her horse couldn't close his lips around it). The tack shop DIDN'T HAVE a plain 5" eggbutt snaffle, but they DID have a $50 Stubben eggbutt BRADOON, which they gladly sold her. Was I ever PISSED. I made the student return the bit, get her money back, and buy the plain eggbutt ($25) elsewhere.

                                  I bought my Arc de Triomphe bridle there, and ordered the reins at the time of purchase. I waited for over a MONTH (was told it was Arc's fault, not the tack shop's), and when the reins came in, they were buckle ends. The bridle I bought CLEARLY had hook studs, it was CLEARLY going to be used in the hunter/eq ring, and it was right in front of the employee as he filled out the order form for the reins. Again...I was PISSED. Made them send back the buckle ends and order me the hook stud version...which took another MONTH.

                                  This same tack shop has employees who get royally pissed when you want to sit in the saddles without committing to buy one. Hello, how am I going to know which ONE I want to buy unless I sit in a bunch of them? They seem to hate people who "shop around;" but honestly, that's the only way to find out what you want/need!

                                  I've also had the demoralizing experience of watching said tack shop's employees DROP EVERYTHING to wait on a "big spender." Even when there are peasants like me waiting on line. I was there recently when one such "big spender" casually asked if the older model A5 clippers are still available, since "the new ones are crap." BAM...one tack shop employee was INSTANTLY on the phone to the manufacturer to ask, while the other employee continued to chat up BS customer. Had it been me, I would have gotten a blank stare and an "I don't know, maybe you should try eBay or something." And I always get a dubious look when I hand over my debit card, as if they expect it to be declined or something.

                                  It pisses me off to no end...that's why I only go there when ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY. Thanks to great mail-order places like Dover, online shops like EquusNow, and the new State Line Petsmart in my area, I almost never have to go to the snotty tack shop.

                                    I used to manage the fragrance counter at a higher end department store. I was on commission and hated spending and hour with someone talking about the fragrances, giving samples, showing "gift with purchase" options etc only to see them wander off to the off price shop in the mall to buy. I do sympathize with the hardworking staff who get run around like dogs then see the customer call Dover on the cell phone as they walk to the car! If you are going to use your local shop to test item before mail ordering, at least have the courtesy to shop on your own. Go to a place that has merchadise out where you can try it. Don't waste a clerk's time while someone who wants to buy, here, today leaves out of frustration.

                                        I just wanted to add to this thread by saying I LOVE MY TACK SHOP. It's smaller, yes, but the employees are friendly, nice, and if they don't know something, they find someone who does and send them to help you!
