Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

HAHAHA, go as you please in my world would be go very fast. My silly oldie I can't seem to keep at a trot at all after having had a year off. Canter is more comfortable for him, so I say what the heck. We just walk a long time to warm up and canter. Perhaps in a couple of weeks trot will work out, lmao.

          • Welcome mbdobbs! Like you, I just bought my first horse ever 3 months ago. It still freaks me out that I'm responsible for him. I love it though!

Courvoisier, thanks for the Rolex rundown! That was something I noticed on the TV too - how fit the horses are. They must look incredible in person. What a wonderful story about that rider hugging her horse. How nice is that?! Let us know if you find out anything interesting.

"Go as you please".... that sounds just about perfect at this point. LOL!

Courvoisier, your BBname is hard for my awful typing but thanks so much for the Rolex report. I was also amazed at the fitness of the horses. Their enthusiasm in the Stadium Jumping cause the poles to go flying. You could build a house when some are thru. LOL

The TV broadcast only showed a few riders and I am glad to hear that there were few falls or stops that you saw. Brave horse and riders, if not crazy horses and riders.

Sounds like quite a trip with the weather. Load up those pictures.

Hey Jakeable you have had your 1st horse for 3 months? WOW. How fun for you to finally own one of the great beast we bow down to everyday. Just go as you please!!!

                  • lol, yeah Gunnar, I hear you. A lot of people from our farm (big A show barn) and also a lot of people from another forum I play on post here. So I have the long name to remain somewhat annonomous. Sometimes I need to post questions, and don't particularly want them all knowing who's asking. Perhaps I could change it to Cognac. lol

I had a baby step rather major accomplishment last night. My horse is coming off a year off. I walk him to the arena, his head is high, he's trying to walk in front of me. He's got that long happy swinging walk. I'm thinking, oh boy here we go again. The last several rides I've not been able to keep him at a trot at all. We've walked and we've cantered. He's just wanting to gogogo. He's not fit enough to do much. Anyway, so last night I decided to just walk. Eventually pulling up reins and (that's generally when he's ready to gallop due to time off) worked on collected walk. He remained walking. He also has a mack truck mouth. He was soft and had nice good horse brakes. Is this my horse I'm thinking? lol, can't be. He used to be a professional eventer, so in the past when I've gotten into a two point, he's all about GO. Well, this is the big deal part. He was being so well behaved that I got into the two point at the walk, and imagine my suprise.... he remained at a walk the entire 15 minutes. Good ole horsie. I've had him for 3 years and that's the first time I've been able to do that not at a trot. It was cool. And it should help me work on getting my legs back. Suprisingly I'm not too sore today. I must be starting to get some legs back from the last couple of weeks of work.

                    It was a lovely evening.

Oh and someones trying my daughters horse out today. Praying they love her. Daughter desperately needs a larger/quieter hunter.

                      • Courvoiser, I have your problem too. My old steady eddie has decided he is 4 again and wants nothing to do with walking. He will trot, but loves to canter.

I entered my very first ever show on saturday doing dressage - Intro A and B. I was a nervous wreck, all these little kids were bombing around on their ponies. Adult riders were doing collected canters were apparant ease and style. There I was just trying to stay at a walk and perfect my halts. I was sooo intimidated! Finally my turn came, I was so glad to get in the ring and just get it over with. We turned in a very respectable ride and got a 60. The judge said I would like to see more energy from him. Well I shouldn't have listened. My horse is full of energy already. So for test B, I pushed him a bit more and ended up breaking into a jig in the walk and then fighting his head at the trot. Why oh why did I listen, I know what he is like. So we ended up with a 57.

After all was said and done, I did have a good time and was glad to get that first show under my belt. I spent hours washing, trimming, cleaning tack, etc - I never knew how much work was involved in a show.

Gunnar hope all is well with your horse after surgery.

Thanks for all the jingles. Bodie has his surgery this afternoon. I have been so worried about him and wish I could be there. My trainer said no point on going up. They will take good care of him. He is hay dunker and he needs buckets of water. He is probably so confused. Where is my water as he trys to dunk his hay in the electric waterer. I sound like my child is in the hospital. I have no children so he and all my other animals are my children. I could ramble on for hours.

Back to the grind to pay for this leg fixing!!!!

                                  • Jingles for your guy- he sonds like he is in good hands. My first and third horses were hay dunkers, too. The third one used to clog the auto waterers. We were unpopular at the winter shows when we'd be stabled indoors and he'd flood the aisles...

Anyway, hoping things go ok and he's back and happy with his mom soon!

I finally rode yesterday, and boy is my butt sore! I need to get a new saddle- my flat PDN-ish thing is so not suitable for my old a$$! It was lovely, however- I rode the dumblood and the old field hunter. I jumped the old guy, and as soon as I stopped trying to make him get the close spot so he'd use his hind end, we got along fine! He was getting really mad at me- I can just imagine what he was thinking: "Look, lady, I'm 20 and have no joints left. If I want to take a nice lofty long spot, I'm going to do it. I don't need you to work on my form, and if you keep pulling on my mouth to get me to add a stride, I'll get you." It was really funny, actually- I usually just hack him out in the eventing fields, but the trainer who I rode for wanted him to pop over a few fences to keep him in practice, so we did some little stuff and it reminded me why I generally like the greenies- if I have nothing to work on for the horse, I have to pay attention to myself and I stink!

Anyway, going again on Thursday, so maybe me and the dumblood will do some fences.

Good luck with your baby's surgery, Gunnar- my catchrides and I are jingling like crazy for him!

                                      • Thanks for the welcome everyone! I like this thread a lot and feel less intimidated. Jakeable, you hit it on the head when you said "I can't believe I'm responsible for him." I'm lucky I board at a barn where there are a lot of very knowledgeable people who I am not afraid to approach at any time.

I sometimes wonder if I should eventually switch though to an H/J stable, if I ever want to show. Everyone at my barn's always off to eventing and dressage competitions. Well, one thing at a time.

Gunnar, what exactly is teh surgery your horse is getting? I know that one day I will be one of those people walking her horse off of a long injury. Here in the DC area, it's called "going to Leesburg," as that's where the closest big equine hospital is. I just hope that when it happens, I'll be there for my horse.

And Cognac, your horse is gorgeous!
