Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

    • Gnomes tolting, now THATS a strange image! Icelanics are compact little horses, kinda sports car like in their handling The Tolt is similar to a running walk or rack, but Icelandics can tolt over very rough ground. Fast, smooth and comfortable, just the thing for a re-rider!

      Icelandics - Tolt-ally wonderful!

        How was the weekend?

I want news of all things good and bad. I never heard from you cothers how gruesome the Rolex was. Watched NBC coverage yesterday. Warning:I am getting on my soapbox now. It seems the horses that somehow were lucky enough to be freaks of nature who can use their bodies in unimaginable ways are the only ones capable of sucessfully completing a 4star event. How many horse fell etc. Anyone know? I have trouble with the fences having to be so big and solid with the combinations requiring bravery to the point of stupidity on the horses part. Did you see a lot of stopping or were there more brave horses who flailed along if need be. Such brave beasts carrying those silly humans over the course. Yeah for them

Off my soap box now. Sorry if I offended of you eventers.

        • Greetings, fellow Re-Riders!
Just checking in to say the schooling show went extremely well on Sunday. All the relaxation work is really paying off with my zesty TB! We did a nice progession from cross rails to 2'6" and I am feeling much more confident about the rated show in a few weeks. My boy got many "cookies" on Sunday when we got home!!

Now, if the lead change fairy would just visit me some night, I would be in 7th heaven!

          • Greetings Re-riders!

mtnprlfan - YAY for a good show! Cross-rails to 2'6 is a big jump (so to speak).

Gunnar, I was in utter amazement at what the eventers do. I'd loff to hear personal accounts from our re-riders who attended Rolex.

Re-riding weekend was great. Too cold and rainy for riding outside, but I think we're starting to bond! Woo hoo! Coach is back this week and I'm really looking forward to a lesson.

              • Alrighty- instead of my usual whinge about how I never get to ride and I don't have my own horse and I'm a sucky re-rider, I post something different: I'm going riding tomorrow! Hoopdee! I finished my last really hard diss. chapter (only a couple more easy ones to go and I'm a Dr.!), so I can start riding again.

So I will probably hop on the dumblood, and maybe the Princess Mare, and maybe one or two of the babies- yay!!! I can't wait...I'm going to be so sore! I don't care!! Maybe I'll jump! Hoo-ee!

Congrats to you on your successful show mtnprl (is that right?) The trainer for whom I ride (check out my grammar) mentioned a while ago that I could show if I want, but...I don't know...I'm barely able to deal with her watching me, much less a *judge*...and *juniors*...yikes!

Well, we'll see. I don't even have a single coat left, and even if I did, it sure wouldn't fit me! As an athletic junior, I had no hips and no boobs. Now I have both, so I gave my TS's and my coats away to some hipless junior a few years ago. Grrr...hipless kids....grrrr....ok, so if anything exciting happens tomorrow, I'll post again- I'm just glad to not be posting another poor-little-foursocks post again!

                • Sammy's Mom - oohhh, hang on.

Wotan - did you have 8 lessons last week? LOL

mtnprlfan - congrats. What are showing in at the rated show?

My weekend was mixed. Saturday flatting and the rain gods had been kind and the sand ring was in great shape. Rover was just an excellent boy especially given it was the 2nd ride outside for the year.

Now Sunday hmmm. We started out wonderfully, struggled in the middle but ended up well.

Can someone please tell me why my left hand seems to become paralayzed. I seem to be able to keep track of it up until about 2 strides out and then I seem to have no control over it. It drops down ineffectively until I get in the air to release. My horse keeps on telling me that it would be helpful if used both reins.

Like every other prejudice, things that arent understood are usually somewhat scary. Could I ever do it? Probably not, but even with a relatively (and I stress relatively) firm understanding of eventing I wouldn't DREAM of passing judgement. If the horses didn't want to do it...very simply they wouldn't. Some horses are cut out for the job and some aren't

Some horses pitch a fit at the idea of cantering over a 3 foot 6 oxer with a liverpool under it. Those horses obviously were not meant to be jumpers. Same thing applies. The horse that can make it to Rolex LOVES what it's doing, and the ones that DON'T love it simply aren't doing it.

I've seen scarier more harmful things at a AQHA and TWH shows (just for an example) and those horses have NO say in the matter.

RegalBeagle - showing in an unrated division called "Long Stirrup" - jumps are 2'6". They have a division for 18+ and for 17 and under. At this show there is also an Long Stirrup Eq and a Long Stirrup hunter. Since my trainer wants me to go on Saturday, I'll be in the Eq version. It's a long way from the A/Os, but it's a start!! Unfortunately for me, it's the first bunch of classes of the day, so I'll be up at 3am to braid...just like the good old days of my youth!

                          Hey On second thought,

No offense meant. I was just curious how many horses did stop and or crash? No Rolex attendees have responded.

On my soap box again: My most recent experience with a x country course was at the Young Riders. The water element was late in the course and one horse fell in the water and they had to hold his head up for 20 minutes until he was strong enough to arise. This was clearly not his choice. I agree that a lot of cruel things go on in other disciplines. I worked as a groom for a Reining trainer in the 70's who used some very cruel methods to get his horses to cooperate. He was a winning trainer but I quit because of his methods. Off my soap box again.

On to other topics. My poor guy is having knee surgery tomorow. We need some jingles.

Back to the grind to feed that $1,000,000 car I own that has a flat tire. I figure with his cost and monthly upkeep and show bills you could buy a million $ car.

Loff those horses and keep on driving Toyota's.

                                • Hello everyone! Gunnar recommended this thread to me after seeing my post in the "stuck in the '80s" column. I'm a TOTAL re-rider, so belong here. I'll just introduce myself briefly. I rode as a teenager in the early 80s in the juniors and hunters (NOT junior hunter, never got THAT good.) Twenty years later, I started taking riding seriously again, and a year later (six months ago), I bought my first horse. Never owned my own. I've no interest in competing soon but fantasize about doing the amateur hunters -- no real interest in the jumpers. I guess it's from my childhood. Love those damn hunters. I have an OTTB and she is PERFECT for me. Bought her from my old trainer. I love my stable, though it's a dressage / eventing one, it's not snobby or hoity toity -- that's something I don't miss about the old showing days. Still, my trainer is wonderful and I'm definitely a better rider than I ever was. Sometimes I wish I had the means to do nothing but ride and just get really into it. I LOVE going to watch shows. I'm just not ready to be watched yet, even if it is a dinky schooling show. I've also gotten really into Pat Parelli's stuff. It's helped my horse a lot. Anywhere here do that? His attitude is a bit annoying, but he knows his stuff.

Alright, enough for now ... looking forward to participating here.

                                  • Gunnar - jingling here for a successful surgery!

Jakeable/Irish - 2'6" does indeed look like a mountain at times! I actually think the 2'6" jumps at the shows look a little smaller than the ones at home...I think that may be because they are all filled in nicely with flower boxes and panels rather than just poles with a lot of air between them!

It's good to be a re-rider these days. Heck...the last time around you were SOL if you couldn't do at least 3'! I'd be staying home without the 2'6" classes!

Edited to add: Welcome mbdobbs! Always room for more re-riders! I'm sure you will find some Parelli fans lurking about...lots of people like his stuff.

welcome. your story and experience sounds similar to many other reriders. We try to compare stories, funny times, sad times, sore times, lame horse time (me, me, me), old hores stories (me, me, me (Gunnar is mine), lawn ornament stories (me if my horse's surgery does not go well), rescue horse stories, 1st show worries, x country schooling tales. The list is endless. Whatever comes up most reriders can relate to.

                                        • lol, okay Gunner heres my Rolex report. It rained on Thursday and Friday. The rain affected fridays dressage way moreso then the cross county imo. Some of fridays rider had to do their test in medium to heavy rain. They were all troupers and just did the test with a smile. The footing in the arena remained reasonable dispite the rains. It seemed to me that the horses transitions were affected a bit. Many of them seemed to leap into a canter. That sort of stuff.

On saturday it didn't rain, and had quite a bit of wind so the footing was fine. I didn't see many refusals. Just a handful, under a handful actually. The ones I saw you could see coming. I did see several riders having to apply a swift crop in a couple of jumping situations over combinations. There was one fairly big rider/horse crash, but we weren't in the vacinity and missed it. We got there at 8 in the morning and walked the course until the last horse went by. The horses are just so amazingly fit and bold and athletic, I felt I had to take in every second as best I could.
Sunday it rained all morning, and dried up at noon. My rain coat apparently was more of a dry weather windbreaker. Within an hour we were getting soaked, so bought a couple of those rain slicker things. It again didn't seem to affect the footing too bad, or the morning mod riders. I can't believe the strong half halts these riders have to use after the horses galloping around on Sat. The horses still seem adrenaline buzzed and real up on day three. One very tender moment was when Kim Maroni (sp?) on Test run I think her horse was named...hugged her horse while in the saddle before she did her show jumping. When she was done she did it again. It was just so nice to see such apprection for what her horse did for her, and love for her horse. I wrote her name down to do some research when I came home to find out more about the two of them. Way cool moment.

In an unorganized nutshell, that was my Rolex trip. lol I'll have to see if I can upload some pictures of our trip. Due to the conditions/rain I took about 200 less photos than last year.
