Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • Actually Boston Chicken-- it was not the meat man remark that even got me.. I was more offended and rolling my eyes that I did not see the meat remark until much later after having posted my remark.

Personally I think talloaks was very wah wah wah.... So the horse cribs-- some people pick their noses.

I do not know of any person that tried a horse (whether it was an expensive hunter, an upper level event horse) that said.. oh.. no sorry cant do it.. that horse cribs.

Sheesh.. my friend just sold a green hunter pony for over 15k that would crib all day long. Pony is worth every crib she takes and then some she is so good at her job. When my friend took her to one A show to try and get some exposure for her (pony had no clue how to even do changes) and pinned for the division.. my friend left her strap off just to give pony a reward.

Personally my little mare totes her tail a weird way to the side.. I can't stand it but I sure as heck would not get rid of her because of it.

I am not surprised at all at the reaction - I had the same one when I read that (though I sympathize with the situation overall). We all say things in anger/frustration that we wouldn't normally. But Talloaks, you shouldn't be shocked at the reaction, particularly in this company. It's such a sensitive issue. We all love horses - vices and all.

Biting is. Besides, would it be up to COTH to disclose that a horse being advertised for sale on this site is a biter? No -- it's up to the seller. Just as importantly, it is also up to the buyer to ask "does this dog bite." The point is, there is DUAL responsibility in a sale. Talloaks is having a hard time owning up to hers.

Yes, I can understand that perhaps talloaks wrote that meat-sale comment sarcastically. May I be the first to direct her attention to the EDIT icon at the lower right-hand corner of her post? It is oh-so-convenient for open mouth first, think second situations.

        • ok, i will give you all the fact that yes i would be upset that the horse cribs when i was not expecting it, but again i say did you ask if the horse cribed!no, these people at the track are only going to answer what you ask them. they can not read your minds. and no one is going to give up info that nobody has asked about(at the tracks),that mare would have been sold anyway.if not to you to someone else that does not care that she cribs! i am real sorry that you have been put in this sitution but to blame canter for this is just plauin wrong. all they do is try to help put trainers and buyers together, and let me tell you if you do not know someone at one of these tracks you will not get on the backside to see any of these horses. so all they are trying to do is help. and they get slandered in the process. stop whinning and sell the mare to someone who will take her for what she is. did you honestly think you could buy a sound, nice mannered clean legged mare for 3,500.00 with no vices or problems. all horses come with baggage, just like humans! and try the ulser thing, it really will help her, may even stop here from cribbing all together. can't you just give her a chance?

          • Also, Shelly, an important sidenote. CANTER does not act as an "agent" in any way, shape or form. They simply advertise horses for sale FOR FREE. Just like Equine.com or dreamhorse, only they do not charge for their services. The point of CANTER is to help to find homes for TB's coming off the track. Nothing else.

About rescue organizations … be they Canter or the Grey Hound Rescue or any breed rescue… it is critical that the maintain credibility with the public. For example, we’d be critical if the Greyhound Rescue people didn’t disclose that a given dog bites (under the excuse that the buyer had only asked if the dog “had vices,” rather than specifically asking if the dog bites.) Whether they do fine work or not, rescue organizations can not make victims of the people who are trying to help them out. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

                Cartier = Troll!!

Be advised, Cartier is a troll. No real horseperson would be this thick in the head and have so little regard for an organization that saves horses.

This is just trolling. I think it's time to put up a sign that says, "Please don't feed the trolls."

I would be tempted myself but I put in an application to adopt a CANTER Mid-Atlantic mare. If I don't get her, then maybe.

Just got back from town and tending to business and am really disppointed in the comments from some of the people on this thread.
My anger, yes, was directed at the sellers for non disclosure---and I will not talk about that anymore at this time.
The little mare is lovely, I never said I disliked her. I have purchases a miracle collar for her and hope it will work for her.
For all of you, with the nasty comments, that think I would ever let you get your nasty grubby little hands on this lovely mare FORGET IT!!
Some of you here have made a mountain out of a molehill and have said some pretty awful things that were not necessary. I am only hoping it is because of immaturity.
I can get over the fact that I was "taken" by a New England trainer!! Now can some of you grow up???
As far as Canter goes, I never did blame them at all. They do a good job and besides if they hadn't advertised all the horses that needed good homes, how would I have ever found this horse, learning about cribbing, and learn never to trust New England race track trainers. Some of my comments have been tongue in cheek but it seems a lot of you didn't get it!!

                        • A friend of mine has a rather expensive horse that she imported from Ireland. He cribs.

Nevertheless he is probably the nicest horse in the barn, is a cross-country machine, and she'd have no trouble selling him in the mid 5 figures. Even though he and the horses around him live in box stalls and have only an hour turnout a day, none of the horses around him have ever started cribbing.

I doubt you'll have any trouble selling this mare.

                          • talloaks, I agree with you that it is the seller's fault, and that they should have disclosed this vice. Cartier did get me angry though, because of the venom spewed about CANTER. I hate to see such a wonderful orginization being slammed, and I know you didn't do the slamming. Good luck with your little girl, and maybe you'll find she's not so bad after all

I have just read this ENTIRE thread. It makes me pretty sick. Can't ANYone take responsibility for their own actions any more? You bought a horse sight-unseen, with no pre-purchase exam. You apparently have a death wish against any horse who cribs and yet you never even ASKED if the horse was a cribber. I just can't see this as being ANYbody's fault but YOUR OWN. Please suck it up and do right by the poor mare.

                              • Unfortunately, there is a semantic difference between an "issue" and a "vice."

A standard question for all horse purchasers should be "does this horse have any VICES?" And ask it in front of a reliable witness (a good reason for not horse-shopping alone.)

I have found, however, that some sellers simply don't understand what a vice is. Which is why I have a much-loved weaver in my barn who came from some very nice but stupid people who thought he was dancing... So it's worth listing "vices such as weaving, cribbing, windsucking, box walking, rearing."

                                • I think both perspectives have been gone over pretty well to this point. I have to say that it is a pretty basic question to ask of a seller "does the horse crib?" but we have all bought horses sight unseen (and made the accompanying mistakes) and each of us has different tolerance levels on various "issues."

Nice pic of the mare here

Very good disclaimer from CANTER here particularly the part about being realistic in one's expectations.

Mares description is offered here scroll down to NoHo- 124. Notice there are a few horses listed by this particular person. And notice the wording on the canter listing "sound, no issues" which has been quoted here making me wonder how in depth the discussions with the owner/trainer were regarding this particular mare.

Talloaks while I feel for you that you believe you have been misled, you are the only person who knows that cribbing is a "deal breaker" issue for you. That said, it is your responsibility to ask the questions needed to determine if this is a horse you want to buy, especially as the horse was one of the 10 or so listed at $3,500 (there was one I saw at $3,999, whats up with that price? LOL).

It is also your responsibility to protect your (and your facility's) reputation by being aware of what you do and say, in action and in words. Best of luck with the mare, I am sure we would all love to see pics of her since she has arrived at your location. We would all also love to know if you have any possible sales "in the works" as there are several folks interested in buying her, even forewarned that she is a cribber.

Remember that your reputation is invaluable - and no amount of money can fix it once it has been damaged.

                                        • With all due respect, Talloaks, the posts you made until now definitely sounded like you had ZERO interest in keeping this mare. It sounded like you just wanted to be rid of her. I'm not sure what you said that was "tongue in cheek" but it certainly did not read that way to me. That does tend to be a problem with the internet and e-mail - no tone and facial expressions to go along with the words.

There were several people on this thread that did nothing but offer to give the mare a good home. They should not be condemned for wanting things to work out for Hay Worthy.

I agree that several comments got a bit too personal but Cartier did a good job of fanning the flames with repeated attacks on CANTER.

I certainly hope things work out for you and Hay Worthy!
