My daughter's horse is named "Snickers". Suits him to a "t" since he's dark chocolate brown with a caramel-colored muzzle, he's unbelievably sweet, and just a little nutty...

Forum rules and no-advertising policy
As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.
Board Rules
1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.
This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.
Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.
Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.
2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.
3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.
4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.
Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.
Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.
Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:
Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.
Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.
Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.
Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.
Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.
Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.
Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.
5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.
6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.
If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.
Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.
7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.
8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

My daughter's jumper had the unfortunate barn name of "Crackhead" when we got him from the track. He is now Tyler for no very good reason except teenage daughter said "he looks like a Tyler".
His show name is Ghost of a Chance. His first trainer wanted to have him put down and said he was dangerous and not athletic. He had "a ghost of a chance of ever amounting to anything". (She also called him White Trash but we decided against using that as a show name.

When I got Kizzy, the people we bought her from called her Kismet, or Kizzy for short. And Kismet means fate. And it really fit her because it we were actually looking for a large pony at the time. And another girl at the barn actually found her, but Kizzy was too young, and had absoulutly no training when we got her. So we drove out to where she was...and she was jus staning in a pasture...and I thought to myself "thats the horse I want". So we took her back to my barn to see how she went. We free lunged her in the arena over a little cross rail to see how she jumped. So we chase her over it...and boy was that an awful sight. My mom kinda looks at me like "no...you dont want this horse" so we tryed it again...and boy could that mare jump. She was the roundes, cutest jumper I have ever seen. So we bought her right then and there. Anyways...we never did keep Kismet as her show name as there was another horse on the circuit with that. So her show name turened out to be Diamond Girl...like the song. But if I do ever show her...I think I will change it to Kismet.

Then my ponys name was Pebble Beach. I never liked that name, the people that we bought her from named her that after the golf course...horrible huh? We just called her Pebbles (which was perfect cuz she was gray with fleabites). But everyone thought we called her pebbles after pebbles from the flinstones. There was a lady at the barn that would call us Pebbles and BamBam...and I just happend to be BamBam. I should have changed her name...cuz I hated Pebble Beach.

Both of mine came with their names:
Cool definitely thinks he is. I showed him as Street Smart which also fits. His TB registered name is General Putnam, named for the newscaster who was his breeder.
Star's registered name is Aldebaran, which is a star as well as the name of one of the horses in Ben Hur (the youngest and the swiftest, if I remember correctly). He has a blaze (and Cool has a star) which creates some confusion. When he came into the barn, before I bought him, they were calling him Baron b/c they thought the end of his name was pronounced that way. I insisted on it going back to Star after I bought him.
Other horses in our family history have included Mariah (picture a large black horse), Heffalump (a large ugly appaloosa), Sadaat (named by his previous owner in honor of the historical figure) and Angel (who wasn't--I showed her as Hellzapoppin')The Evil Chem Prof

About a month ago, I was at an auction and bought a 10 month old colt off of the meatman who had the winning bid.
When bringing him home that night I joked with my friend that I saved the horse a trip to Europe ('cause that's where he would have been heading in a cellophane wrapper). It stuck so his show name is Trip To Europe with his barn name being Trippeur.

My horse was named after Betsy Ross actually...her barn name is Betsy. The barn we bought her from was named Federal Farm and all of the horses had names that went along with government and history.
She came with her show name, Forever South. Her dad's name was Capital South and her mom's name was A Joy Forever, so it just came out of those two names.

Arggg. Robby had to bring up the Roots thing.
I cringed when I saw PsycoTBs post of her horse being named Kizzy (ignored it the first time.) Bad child hood memories. My father used to call me Kizzy Lou all the time as a teenager. You can't imagine how much I hated it.
My horse's name is Sigal Starlight. I only call her by her full name when I am making fun of her because Starlight is a cheezy middle name for her.
Sigal is a little purple flower on a tree in Hebrew. She was owned by some people that were jewish and the father of the family named her Sigal, his little daughter wanted to name the baby horse Starlight...hence, Sigal Starlight arose.
Ironically, before I found out the meaning, I had chosen purple as my cross country color.
cheers

My mare's name is Evariste, she came with it and her barn name, Loretta.
She is a big bossy chestnut girl so Loretta suits her quite well. She is usually referred to as "The Lovely Loretta", and she likes that quite a bit
.
Evariste must have been because they needed to do something with an E. I've looked the name up before and discovered that the most well known Evariste was a very eccentric French mathematician:
"Evariste Galois' school reports began to describe him as singular, bizarre, original and closed. It is interesting that perhaps the most original mathematician who ever lived should be criticised for being original. A teacher reported: Intelligence, marked progress but not enough method."
The guy ended up dying from wounds he sustained in a duel when he was 21.
Knowing my mare as I do the name does suit her. She is very opinionated and bright but definately does things her way. Nobody ever pronounces it correctly at shows. Maybe she is crabby because she has a boy's name that nobody can say properly...
So is it bad luck to change your horses name? Or does that only apply to boats?

LOL-I leased a horse about 15 years ago and her name was Kizzy, and named for the roots character. Personally, I always wanted "Chicken George"
On a side note, last night when the vet came, he took one look at will and said "Look at that mane! It's great...he looks just like Bob Marley!" (remember he's black).....so, the whole time he was getting injected and stuff, the vet would call him Bob or RastaMan...it was funny. He really is kindof a laid back dope smokin' kind of a guy (the horse, not the vet

We have two:
A TB named Cache Buffer. For you computer geeks, yes, it is a computer term. He was born in Washington state, so I'm thinking some Microsoft dude was breeding TB's out there.
An 18.1 warmblood named Denali, for the national park that is home to Mt. McKinley. His name when we got him was "Big Sexy" after a wrestler.

William is "Playing By Heart," after the Gillian Anderson movie. He was going to be named after it, regardless, but it worked out that his entire deal is very heart/love related (big red horse, big heart on forehead, born on Valetine's, etc). Lucky for him, the movie was renamed from the working title, "Dancing About Architechture.."
Kate is "Kiss Me Kate" because I am not at all original - I'd change back to her "real" name, which I'm really starting to prefer ("A Wink and A Nod") but all of her stuff is already monogrammed, and I don't show her anymore anyway.
Maybe I'll work her real name in when I breed her..
I have no idea why Toga is Saratoga, since he was born in Texas. I guess I could ask, but, eh.. it fits him. The rest of his name relates to the breeder and farm name - all of his brothers have the same in their names, too.\"A redhead and an appaloosa mare... heaven help us should one of you get mad...\"

Delighted- There is a Saratoga, Texas, so maybe that's where it came from?
We have Foxhunter whose registered name is Cap'n Scrunchy. Enough said right? Barn name is Max or Sexy.
Polo's registered name is Hollow Ridge, but he often gets called Junior.
We turned Golf Course Spy into Somerset's Spy Guy barn name Big Mac (he is 17.2).
Poor QH, PG barn names are Dancer/Fat Boy, registered name Achey Breaky Dancer. We looked at his papers wrong the first time and thought his name was Hawaiian Dancer, so we were going to call him Maui, but that was his sire...sigh.
Shiloh is registered as Scary Fog, but gets called Big 'Un by his owner.
Kamo's registered name is Kamokazie Ed, the Ed part gets dropped for his show name.
I still want to name a pony Freak of Nature.Rhode Islands are red;
North Hollands are blue.
Sorry my thoroughbreds

Hmm.. just checked the map, and it's pretty far away from where he was bred. He was supposed to be a racehorse, so I always assumed it was a Saratoga NY thing.. maybe I WILL ask his breeder, one of these days..
