Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

Considering that I absolutely do NO on-line shopping, banking, etc. and the fact that my address is a box number in the middle of nowhere, I'm not too concerned. The fact that I've got more information about them...phone numbers, account numbers, etc. leads me to believe that when all this is done, they'll be gone pretty fast.

The fact that this guy is using this lame scam in an attempt to get money and falls for me desperately wanting the paisley trunk and wanting to run away to Hawaii with him leads me to believe he's too stupid to figure out how to do identity theft, steal SS#, etc. If he knew how to do that, he wouldn't be doing the lame Nigerian scam!

    • that's an ignorant statement. it doesn't matter if you don't do any online shopping.

you may very quickly find out, that all of a sudden, you are doing a WHOLE LOT of internet shopping...having supplied them quite unwittingly with everything they need, through the magic of the internet.

remember, if you communicate with them, you are opening yourself up - WIDE OPEN.

I am not challenging anything in your quote above. I don't do online shopping. Please help me understand what information, the minimum needed infomation, that could be harvested via the internet that would hurt <me>. I hear so much about identity theft...please educate me.

          • The thing is, the US can do NOTHING about the scammers in Nigeria. They have no control, don't over estimate the US' power...While our government controls so much here, they can only do so much over there.

I agree with SLC, never underestimate a scam artist.

Anything you save on your computer...Do you check your bank account online, your credit card statements via the internet?

If you use IE, you are opening yourself up to a world of trouble, it's very, very unsecure. No browser is perfect, but IE is by far the worst.

If you do your taxes on your computer, that information gets saved to your drive, and all it takes is someone sneaking into your computer to get your SSN, or anything else you may have done on your PC at one point in time.

Just be careful, I always advise people to set up a firewall, and watch what they do and how they do it on their computer.

Yes, it's your computer, but the internet just opens your computer up to everything bad in the world.

I do all of my personal banking, taxes, financial or personal anything behind a firewall and I do not leave it connected to the internet when I am not using it.

              • I did notice that on the Western Union you gave your actual location of where you live, I think it would have been more prudent to make up something rather than use your actual location of where you live (regardless of whether your address is real or not). SLC makes a very good point.

                • Thank you, Kelsey! I <do> have a zonealarm firewall and have had for a few years now...would that be good enough? And I don't do anything having to do with money on the computer I use for internet; I never access any financial information over the net and don't have my ss number on this computer. So would I be correct thinking I am OK?
                  I appreciate your time.

js, the address and phone number on the Western Union bill is for the Edmonton Police Department - Chief Of Police and I don't live in that city!!

Realistically, all he has to do is put 'Daventry Farms' in google and find out all the info. he needs. If he already had my email address and my first name, he already HAD that info. at his disposal.

You really ought to be ok, just make sure no other pertinent info is on there, like your SSN, your birthday, oh, I don't know, mother's maiden name

Just good for people to always keep their guard up. I have a friend who does a lot of *ahem* hacking (not in a bad way! Just into computers of people who let him for practice, etc.) and I have a lot of "acquaintences" (not considered friends) who do some not so nice hacking on the internet and I hear stories from them.

This email conversation comes directly from one of the most famous Nigerian Scam 'Con The Con Man' sites in which these guys do exactly what I'm doing. Since they do it all the time, I thought I would get their advice. Amazingly quick response as I just emailed them about 10 minutes ago!!

                          question:

I am in the middle of wrapping up a 3 week back to back conversation with a
Nigerian scam artist. This is the second time I've done this and posted all
of the letters on my website.

I have basically had them running around looking for the money wire I
'supposedly' sent them, cost them time & money, etc.

Anyways, here's my concern...someone emailed me to warn me to be careful.
She thought if this guy gets mad enough (when he finds out I've been
scamming him) he'll do something like identity theft or steal my social
insurance number, etc. I'm thinking, if he's doing the Nigerian Scam, he's
too dumb to think up anything else or let alone, figure out how to do it.

Have you heard from anyone that had the Nigerian scam backfire on them when
they started messing with the scammer?

                          Thanks,
                          Tracy

                          -----------------------------------------------

No, the Nigerians simply go on to the next attempted victim. If you have
sent them any personal info (bank accounts or SSN) their next step will be
identity theft, whether or not you break it off.

Brad Christensen, using his own name, has actually been able to entice the
scammers to fly to the Rome airport to meet him and to take some other
strange trips and waste money. Although they've been absolutely furious,
they've never tried anything in the way of revenge against him -- they've
not going to come to the U.S. where they could easily be caught, and from
their viewpoint it's not profitable to pursue him.

                          Quatloos!

                              • One other thing I would like to add, for those of you concerned that Tracy is going to meet up with an enraged scammer- it is very expensive to fly from anywhere on the continent of Africa to the US and back again. Unless you are going from Miami to Cape Town (which is about 900 bucks or so), there aren't really direct flights- generally they are routed through Europe (I have spent *days* in various European airports, waiting for my next connection) Added to the expense, which is in the 1000s, one must obtain a visa, which costs money, not only the basic fee, but (in many cases) one has to pay bribes.

These people are doing this to several intended victims at a time- most big and medium and even some small African cities have internet cafes where one can spend a little money and send out lots of emails. Universities and libraries have computers, too. In fact, Nigeria and South Africa are the two most connected countries on the continent. So the initial outlay is fairly small, but following up a failure with travelling to the US would be incredibly expensive and time-consuming. Travelling from African states to European states isn't all that expensive- it is the total trip from Africa to Europe to North America that costs a lot. The cheapest I have ever been able to do is to get a ticket from the States to a European airport and then another ticket twelve hours down the continent to Namibia or South Africa- all of which cost me around 750 bucks and took four days. But I'm a very frequent traveler and I know how to find the best rates by looking exhaustively and booking months in advance and so on. I don't think Mule is going to be doing that sort of research when Tracy dumps him- he's just going to move along to the next guy.

You can take a line and say it isn't straight- but that wont change its shape. Jets to Brazil

So.. what if you "mistranscribe" the numbers in the 'sort' code (or whatever) so it "accidentally" goes to Rome? Or somewhere? With the LARGE amount you are supposed to be sending?

                                      • go onto the internet sometime, any search engine. type in your name. your address and phone number will appear.

step one. now just a few more steps and they have your birthday, and your SS number. and with all that, they can open new accounts in your name, and anythign else they want to do.

and, anything you have written at any time in any email, and just about anything else, is available.

on some county web sites, they can find any wills, property exchanges, arrests, and a great deal more info about you.

you can laugh all you want at their 'scams', most of the time, all they want to do is connect and have a little bit of your time, and you will have been HAD, big time.

remember, anyone with a modicum of internet savvy can literally steal everything yiou have. everything.

do not open unknown email, and for god's sake, for GOD'S SAKE, DON'T answer it. ever.

you all who think it's SOOOO clever to answer scam mail and play with them...you're playing right into their hands.

the worst thing you can do is to assume you are smarter than someone else.

                                        • slc - gotta say that I agree with a lot you have said ...
When I punched in my name on an MSN search, a lot of horse info came up on me, complete with phone, address, email, websites, etc. Some of it not current, but a lot of it is.
Along with my bank as I ahd won a turkey there in one of their raffles, so it wouldnt take a genius from that point onwards to figure out what bank I used!

things that make you go "hmmmmm ..... "
