Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

      Abby_Horse,

You sound so proud to have this mare and are so eager to follow the advices that we have to offer about your lovely Abby. She looks like she is going to need a lot of care and that she is lucky to have you. Have patience with the computer..read on what this "How to's" have to say about downloading pictures, etc. Once you drudge through all of this, you'd be a master! A very useful skill one needs in this society.

If we need people to care for horses, it is better to incorporate caring people into BB and make them feel like they are part of community. Thus, they'd be more likely to go forth and provide better care of horses. If we attack them based on our presumption of their maturity and/or intelligence due to their writing, then we risk losing horses.

I've got some emails out. I do have to leave for work in about an hour, so won't be able to check for any responses until late this evening. I'm not expecting them to get back to me immediately without doing some research/checking & they may never respond to me with specifics.

My main shock is that the Houston SPCA would adopt a horse out in such condition rather than fostering her with someone very knowledgeable in caring for horses in such compromised condition or keeping her at their facility until she was healthier. [I don't know if the rest of you remember the Houston show with that poor downed pregnant mare that was mostly belly - everything went to the foal and she got very little nourishment. She died, the foal lived. But they did keep her in the horse facility under close supervision. This mare is nowhere as bad as that, but still.] I'm also not thrilled about the abusive boyfriend/exboyfriend that the parents allegedly didn't know about. Of course 'boyfriend' could be someone who sits behind her in school and pulls her hair, so ... while I have some concerns, I don't know if it's an actual relationship where he has access to the horse.

            Abby_Horse,

Why are you so afraid of this mare going back to the old owner? If you have done everything right, then what do you have to fear about? You look so happy to have this mare in your care.

My heart goes out to you, Abby_Horse. The members here want horses to be in the best care so they'd do anything- even to the point of diving into the computer keyboard and follow the line to your site to help you with the mare. There will not be much attack if you'd come out honest.

There are a lot of missing pieces, which is why I believe this person is just playing a little game here on the web. I don't sincerely believe this is a real situation, though I guess people like this exist somewhere...there's no way the Houston SPCA would adopt out this mare.

Abby_Horse, if you did get this mare from Houston SPCA and ARE taking good care of her, there is no way they are going to take her back from you. They don't care what is said on some BB board.

And, if you are for real, I'm sure you can understand why some here are concerned that they are being trolled. To be taken seriously among the educated members of this board, please do clean up your spelling and grammar. The way you are writing makes you sound like either 1) a hick with no education at all; 2) an 8 year old child who cannot be taken seriously anyway; or 3) a troll.

You said you can spell and write properly. If so, then why intentionally make yourself look bad - unless you ARE a troll? Get it?

The mare does have a very sweet face. In those photos, she's severely malnourished. Being preggers on top of that is extremely dangerous...for the mare and the foal. 2 weeks of decent food is a great start, she needs a good year or more of that because after having that foal she'll be nursing and that takes a lot out of a healthy fat mare...it can kill a skinny malnourished one. I'm assuming you have her under vet care with a vet coming out often to check her progress, her condition and her pregnancy? She's definitely not the type of mare to foal out without a vet present...she's not in any condition to foal without medical help standing nearby. What has the vet said about her care and her possible foal date?
This mare won't be ride-able for quite a long time. Her body has gone through heck and back with starvation and then the pregnancy. I doubt she should be even attempted to be ridden until well after the foal is weaned...at least 6 months from now.
It *is* exciting to get your first horse...but this one does need quite a bit of very professional care and handling in order to have a shot at surviving long term.

                          Hold onto the bridle!

                            Boston chicken, etc.,

Abby_Horse is real and is having problem communicating. It is as simple as it can be. The best approach is to validate everything she says and go from there. She'd be more forthcoming with all of you. She sounds excited about her horse and wants the whole world to know. when she needs help, she'd be more likely to be clear about what is happening and that she'd be more willing to follow through. She is simply mis-understood. right now, the biggest issue is to give her thumbs up and give her plenty of constructive pointers on how to care for this lovely mare who needs lots of help! Comprende!

Yeah we knew that right when we got her that it was going to take quite a while to fatten her up and beable to ride her. We have had the vet look at her they said she will foal withen 2-5 weeks. We are planing on having a vet out there after she gives birth so the foal could be checked out to make sure that the foal is in good condition.

Prieta - do you know the poster personally? I'm sure you can understand why some of us are suspicious of the situation as presented here. I cannot believe that the Houston SPCA would adopt out a severely malnourished pregnant mare to anyone, let alone a teenager. Thumbs up? No.

Whoa guys! This poster is 14! (sorry if I'm wrong here, but that's the age posted on your pics page). She's a kid who has wanted a horse for years and finally has one, albeit not in the greatest of condition. Yeah, it irks me too that the SPCA wouldn't foster her until she's up to weight, but as we all know rescue organizations have far too much going on, and as long as she's out of the abusive situation she's better off. Does that mean it's a good idea for a 14y-o to have an intensive rehab project as a first horse? No. Not at all. But she has come here. Perhaps we can all help her to educate herself a bit, for good of both this horse and herself as a future horsewoman. We all started somewhere.

I agree that the mare's condition is inexcusable. I am also extremely concerned about the OP's understanding of what an intensive project this will be. But is chasing her down with pitchforks going to help anything? No.

Abby- if you want to be taken seriously, there are a few things you can do. A) spell and grammar check. You aren't doing yourself any favors with this crowd by trying to be cute with your language usage. Perfection is not required (just look at my posts) but readability is. B) Tell the whole story. The boyfriend thing? Goodness. Don't start potential conflicts with off handed comments unless you're 100% committed to backing it up. C) take any all advice with a polite thank you. Whether you choose to actually use it is up to you, but COTH can be a valuable resource.

I truly wish the best for your mare, that she can have a long and happier life than what she has previously known. And I hope you enjoy the many trials and joys of horse ownership.
