Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

    This is so fun!

DL, I listed 10 lbs. of peppermints last night. I was in a "think outside the box" mood and had what I thought was a brilliant idea. I would have liked to come up with some big $ thing, but hopefully this will sell. Whatcha got up there that the rest of us don't? Or, what can you make that the rest of us can't/won't?

I should root around in all the extra tack that I've got and set something free, but I'm a horder and I'm not sure my treasures will appeal to anyone else...

I do small bronze sculpture. Way out of my budget at the moment.!

Sorry, You're not getting your hands on my books!
So, I'm still wracking (wrecking) my brain for something interesting.

Here's a thought, but it would only be usefull for people close by, say within an hours drive of me: one riding lesson, an hour long, for you and your horse.

Or, we could really get exciting, and do a day long clinic, for a bunch of people at one place.
      How does that sound?

Man, I wish you were close to me. I'd love for you to work with the heifer! I think a lesson or clinic is a good idea. Have you got COTH'ers around you to bid?

I'm with you, no books leave my library!

I was thinking of posting some GA peaches to be shipped this summer. (do ya'll think that would even be a good idea?) Have you got apples or something like that?

Well, that's simply because I'm a book hoarder, and won't part with anything!
I have, in my oustanding collection, a lovely little copy of Charles Dickens 'the Cricket on the Hearth' from 1885.
I also have an extensive collection of Calvin and Hobbes.
Yes, indeedy! There's something for everyone!
Not to mention a charming edition of The Confessions of St. Augustine, which I read from cover to cover when I was ten years old.
I know, that's probably a bit weird. But then, I read Conrad, too!
Do you think the clinic idea would fly?

Wooo-hooo! New Vocations has generously donated an artist-signed, limited-edition print of the gorgeous painting, Ferdinand, by Jeanne Shoborg. A generous winning bid for this wonderful print would mean a lot to them, so check it out!

                Hi Lee,

you'd probably be the person to help me understand how this auction works. Let's say I do post an item for donation, and God forbid, someone actually bids on it . How does one go from there? I never participated in anything like this, and I'm somewhat a newbie at online auctions.
I guess I just post something and wait for things to develop.

It's very easy to take part in this auction and complete the transaction. In a nutshell: after you list your item, naming the charity you wish the proceeds to go to, and the bids roll in, the person who has the highest bid at auction close wins your item. You email the winner to get their mailing address so you can prepare their item for mailing, and they get your mailing address so they can mail to you a check in the amount of the winning bid, made payable to your chosen charity, along with a stamped envelope that's been pre-addressed to the charity. Once you receive the check, you'll know that they made good on the transaction, and you can go ahead and mail them their item. You can also go ahead and forward the check to your charity, along with a note explaining that this donation is from the COTH auction. (Most of the charities are aware that we're running this auction.)

There's a thread at the auction site here that also explains in greater detail how the auction works - donating, bidding, etc.

                  Hope this explains things!

Okay, hows this: I go to a barn belonging to some generous COTH member, preferably one with an arena. anyone who wants, can have a lesson while I'm there, for whatever they are willing to donate. They can ride with friends, or alone. At the end of the day, the proceeds go to a recognized horse rescue for this auction.

I'm thinking ARcadia might be willing to privide the arena!! (subtle hint! )

Lord Helpus, would you like to post the listing or should we do it? Same thing for dancinglawn - if so, PT a write-up, along with your chosen charity, and we'll get it up.

I'm still trying to decide if I should list the magical vial of Gypsy Vanner Faerie Dust that I acquired...hmmm.

** FYI - I'm going to Atlanta from Wednesday 'til Sunday, so I'll be MIA for that period.

Well, Lee, I have just spent an hour of my life that I will never get back trying to work my way through that damn forum.

It is the single most confusing place I have ever been on the Internet. And, after I finally was able to register and Log In, I am still not able to post because as soon as I go to the actual forum I show up as Guest again.

So I guess you'll have to do it for me. You can write it -- And the money can go to CANTER, Ohio.

AARRGGGGHHHH. If you have fewer bids than you expect to get, it is probably a result of the difficulty in accessing the firum.

And I am sure I will never be allowed back in because I saw no way to change my password and, of course, the original password was unintelligible.

I do not deal well with frustration, can you tell?

Well, gosh LH I hate it that you had such a hard time, with it all. I suggest that you 1. get a nice big glass of wine, or a frosty beer, or whatever your beverage of choice is - mine, so happens to be RootBeer 2. take a nice deep breath 3. read over the following directions:

                                  - To Log In just go to the "Login" link at the top right hand side of every page - same as you would do to login to COTH, or go to the following link: Login HERE

                                  - To Register, go to the "Register" link, which is again, on th top right hand side of every page, or just go to the following link: Register HERE

*When you register for the first time, an email will be sent to the address you specified when setting up your account. You will be sent an email from "Equine Charities Auction Forums" which will have your password in it. To access your new account YOU MUST use the password that that is sent to you. To do this just go to the Login Screen, and type in your user name and password - the one that was emailed to you. Once you are logged in, you can go to your profile, by clicking on the "Profile" icon on the top of every page, and then change your password to whatever you want it to be.

                                  - If you loose your password: click on the "Forgotten Password?" link on the Login screen, beside the space for your password. Or Just go to the following link:Forgotten Password and your password will be emailed to you.

-If for some reason you are still unable to access your account, then please email me at: equinecharities@talkamerica.net and I will change your password to whatever you like.

Also, you may want to check out the following link, that will hopefully answer your question about how you keep getting logged out:

I can log in fine, but when I click a link it logs me out! It's one of the many - hopefully - helpful threads you will find on our FAQ and Technical Support Issues Forum (which, by the way, you can post on and view just as a guest 0

Let me or lee. know if you are still having problems. I guess it's all just personal preference, because I myself find the Auction BB MUCH easier to deal with and navigate then COTH.
