Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • Weatherbeetas?

The Princess Pony is killing her stuff again.

I have two high quality, really nice blankets that need to go in for repair.

I'm disinterested in buying her another really, really nice blanket for her to break. She can have the good ones back when they're repaired.

But I also don't want something that's going to fall apart and die in a month or so. Weatherbeeta makes a reasonably price-pointed 1200 denier blanket that comes in her size. We previously didn't buy the Weatherbeetas because ETBW put the fear of the lord into me that they would DIEEEEEE at the binding.

So tonight I called ETBW and tentatively mentioned that "... they're on SALE..." and she said "Well, you know the last time I bought a Weatherbeeta was at least ten years ago... so go ask someone."

Anyone have any experience? I ran a search but nothing came up that they're going to absolutely fall apart in seconds.

Also, if I don't get her a 64" medium weight blanket in a couple of days, there will be an ice storm, snow storm, or other winter blizzard in Virginia, MD, PA, WV, and surrounding states.

So it is up to YOU, COTH. Shop for me. Tell me if this is OK. Only YOU can prevent winter.

I have several that are going on 3-7 seasons and are in excellent condition, OTHER than the hardware. Any snaps are crap after a few weeks, but I have heard that they put non-rusting hardware on them now. The only other issue I have with them is they put flimsy elastic on the T-locks (blanket side), which slowly stretches out and tears. I've had to repair about 6 of those in the last couple of years, and that has not been upgraded.
Other than that, I find them really well made and fit well. I'm a fan, especially the Freestyle ones.

Love Weatherbeetas . I have more than I can remember. I have some going on winter #13 and still in great shape. The newest ones I have are probably 5-6 years old (I've lost track because I have so many of them ). They aren't really waterproof anymore but other than having to replace two surcingles on two separate blankets (and those blankets are 10 years old - the straps just rotted but the hardware was fine) I've had no other problems with them. I prefer the Freestyle ones - they don't rub or shift! I have no idea if the more recent ones are as durable but my old sure were worth buying!

(I do have Rambo t/o sheets that I just layer over the WB's if wet weather is coming - that way they stay dry ).

I have some newer ones in my barn: most snaps have to be replaced, and the other annoyance is that the front buckles seem prone to breaking. The material itself holds up well.

They do seem to fit bigger than other brands though, so wise to actually measure the blanket rather than go by their sizing.

I've got a 1200 denier freestyle Weatherbeeta that is 8-10yr old and had its first ever small repair job done after this past winter.

Well, the dog got a hold of the old guy's Orican in its second season, so I bought a really cheap blanket that's held up for three seasons (well, two and a half). The Orican was losing pieces, mainly the leather reinforcement patches at the leg pleats, so I wasn't 100% pleased with it, but I found out about a good blanket repair place so I may try to get them to put a patch on the hole the dog chewed as it's still a good blanket otherwise. And the Oricans definitely run large, the old guy used to look like he was wearing four skirts the sides came down so low.

Just discovered one front buckle is broken tonight... but the material is fine.

I have owned a little bit of everything.. Rambos, Rhinos (these always seem to end up shredded and he is very good to his clothing) , Amigos--- blankets from Schneiders Tack, some other off brands. But my Weatherbeetas have lasted the longest, stayed in the best shape and kept their water proofing the longest. I have 2 that I got the same year I got my older guy--- that was coming on TEN years ago and the only thing that has been fixed on them is (as some one else mentioned) the elastic the the belly straps hook too. I find the freestyle versions rub his shoulders (hes a 16 hand average build TB-- maybe a bit on the narrow side) but the normal cut ones never rub at all and he seems more comfortable in them.

Last year I found one of the 1680 denier mid weight versions WITH hood included for $100 on sale somewhere-- boy was I excited!

I use zip ties to reinforce the front closures (if they're the snap type). I gave up on their crappy snaps, and take blankets off over their head anyway. I don't want a horse getting tangled up in a blanket because the front popped open.

When my Hackney pony started feeling the cold due to age, we got him a Weatherbeeta blanket and it lasted well. He wore it quite often and lay down in it a lot for the last three or four winters he was still alive. I think it may have a couple of little tears but is still would be in usable condition if it fit any of my horses (sadly, the pony had to be put down a couple of years ago).

Now I can't bear to get rid of it because it still smells like him.

I have many Weatherbeeta blankets that have all held up well for 3-6 seasons. I have them cleaned regularly and re-waterproofed every year. They have a very generous fit. The hardware is not as high-quality as a Rambo, but also does not cost $400. It's cheap and easy to have the hardware replaced anyways.

I have older weatherbettas (~10 years or so) that are well worn but I keep as spares if my newer blankets get soaked or need a wash. These ones have held up well.

I bought a weatherbetta a few years ago (it is an orican) that I don't think was as well made as some of the older ones. (Tail flap coming unstitched, trim coming unstitched, but no hardware problems). I've repaired it a few times and it's been delegated as a spare also. IMO stitching that comes undone like this, esp when the blanket is worn by a horse who is not destructive at all, is defective workmanship.

Anyway after that blanket, I bought a Shires high neck and have been pretty happy with that one after 3 seasons.

This year I bought a freestyle high-neck when it was on sale at tack of the day. (yes I am a blanket whore LOL) I put it on my horse for the first time a few days ago and I am very pleased with some of the changes they've made. It seems to fit her much better in the shoulder area, and has padding at the neck closure under her neck - good idea ! I did check the seams and the stitching looks good, so we will see.

Personally I love them. I have a 1200D MW and a 1680D HW. My horse is very easy on her clothes and she goes out alone, though, so that helps them last. I agree the clips need to be replaced after a season or two, but $2 and 5 minutes later, they're ready to go again. Or take them to a blanket repair place and have them do it, but either way, it's not the end of the world.

I scored this HW with the neck cover on clearance last year for $140 and I love it: http://i1213.photobucket.com/albums/...221_154957.jpg

In my experience, they do run like Rambo's size-wise, so if your horse is a 78 in Dover blankets but a 75 in Rambo, buy a 75 in WB also.

Personally I can't stand them and would never buy one again. My horse only wears Rambo/Rhino now and they last forever. I did not have the same experience with WB blankets.

P.S. - I have found REALLY good deals on Rambos on Ebay. Last year I bought an "almost" new Wug for about 1/3 the regular price. It had been worn about 3 times and didn't fit the person's horse.

I love Schneiders. She has at least two blankets from there. But I'm a bit annoyed with them - who runs out of midweights in NOVEMBER? That's when the idiots like us will spend the money on them.
