Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

Thanks for being a part of the COTH forums!

We call it "As The Barn Turns".

For those of you too young to remember there was a radio, then a TV soap opera-"As the World Turns"-may still be running for all i know.
Some riders change their horse, they change their saddle, they change their teacher; they never change themselves.

Remember the horse does all the work, we just sit there and look pretty.

Ehhh I like them too *shamey-guilty face*

I don't have barn drama. And I can't talk about most of the actual drama in my life, because it's all work related now that I don't talk to my mother. And talking about work-related drama is a no-no.

But barn drama is so funny most of the time. Otherwise we'd never get such golden phrases as "relinquish your WHIP!" which I still think about with a grin from time to time.

My Dad calls it "As the Barn Turns."

So thanks, and keep those incompetent barn owner/batshit boarder/con artist trainer stories coming.

Yup me too. I put them on my reading list (mac book pro) for future reading.

First thing I did when I got my iphone was turn off Siri, Auto-correct, and Auto-complete. I do not want an algorithm telling me what word I want to use.

What are some good barn drama threads to read? It's gonna be a cold, wet weekend here and nothing sounds better than reading about drama and horses!

Aw, that's heartwarming, to have a farm blog stalker! I have another blog of the radical feminist variety, and the (gazillion) stalkers I get on that thing are all horrid dudes who are totally creepy. They hack my account, issue death threats, and DDoS-attack me. Nice!

As for my abandoned Dreadful Acres blog, every day something dreadful happens, but by the time I digest it enough to write about it, I'm too exhausted from the dreadfulness! I fall back on the couch with a box of wine and a heating pad on my back. So I'm not sure the farm blog concept is workable. Hopefully I will be able to hire a full-time helper soon, which will leave my mornings free once again for philosophical enquiry into manure piles and hog traps.

I too love the drama threads. More than TV sometimes. They make me want to grab a bag of chips and a margarita and settle in for the evening. Soooo glad I don't have that in my life anymore, but soooo glad others write about it

Yeah, didn't appreciate the barn drama threads but then have had some of my own since moving west.
Dunno if the percentage of dumba**es is greater here or it's because I'm new and don't know anyone but boy ... had one threaten to lock my horse in the stall because I was leaving before the 1 month notice because she got a chiropractor for my horse without my consent.

Not the ones that are succinct and you can learn from, like how to deal with serious problems, but the drama llama relationship ones I don't. Last Spring a friend and I were going down to New Bolton for a lecture and at the last minute she asked if we could include another friend from a barn where we used to board. I said, sure.

Well, the entire drive down this woman - the only thing she talked about was barn drama. It was pathetic. "And THEN she came out to the barn and did this and that and the other, and Sally heard that...and let me tell you, I don't even look at her when she comes any more." For an hour and a half. We kept trying to change the subject but if it got off barn drama she didn't participate.

Ugh. Had I thought of it I would've recorded it on my cell phone and played it back to her (only to her). Nothing sadder than a middle-aged drama llama.

Sometimes the results of this are quite funny though. Especially if you shoot a text to someone and it gets autocorrected and you don't notice it until after it's been sent. I actually managed to finally teach my phone to curse !

Sigh. No, I looked in 3 (almost 4) days ago fully expecting that people would be saying "No way, I hate all the barn drama" and was really surprised that so many people are so into that stuff and love it. It's very uninteresting to me.

So I went away and didn't bother with this thread any more; wouldn't have now until someone just msg'd me and told me I'd been quoted so I looked back in.

I love the ride the Drama Llama too. Now that I'm strictly abiding by my company's electronic policy, and can't watch COTH all day.... I have a coworker with real life barn drama, and we email about it while discussing work accounts

I wish there were a way to clearly mark the drama threads so I could catch up on evenings and weekends.

Today my SO (who is out of town) texted my daughter to see if any of the racehorses worked today. In her reply to him, her so-called smartphone changed one of the horses stable name from KC (short for KC Flyer) to LSD? Definitely a WTF moment and gave us both a good laugh on a cold rainy day.

On that note; my phone autocorrect is a wreck... from a daughter standpoint, my father texted me "Hey" the other day and I responded and never heard back from him. Sent him a text reply in the AM "Sir" and looked at my phone and it had autocorrected it to "Die" I must have typed in "sie" (the E/R are next to each other on the keyboard). I was horrified!!!!!! Almost enough to turn AC off but I need it sometimes..

Personally, I prefer reading COTH drama to reading about barn drama. Why this very day, someone called me "toots" in a very dramatic fashion.

My point is this, though: you Texan grammar experts may be surprised to realize that the correct answer to a question directed at "y'all" is "w'all."

                                    "Are y'all coming tonight?"

                                    "Yes, w'all are coming!"

I think much of some consider drama is regular life happening.
When some has been doing something long enough, someone else will want to hunt down all they don't do good enough.

Then they relish making a big mountain out of it as their next task in their lives, forgetting there is a real person behind that one being bashed, that like everyone else has done much good right along also.

Picking a target and bashing them mercilessly where they can, that seem to be human nature, at least the way some tick.

We make things better by examining and re-examining them constantly.
We don't make them better by tearing them down and happily watching Rome burn, as some drama does.

We need to remember that there generally are at least two, if not more sides to any story.
