Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

      So?

      Goody for her.

You know, I think it's only a matter of time before someone that knows her tells her about this thread. I'd be very interested to hear her reaction on our opinions since she so clearly stated hers.

      • Finally got my COTH and read the letter. At first I was really put off by her tone and attitude, but then I realized that everyone is entitled to an opinion and just because I don't agree with hers doesn't make her opinion any more wrong or right. Just different than mine.

        • You know what IS starting to irritate me about this thread is the general bashing everyone is doing on other equine sports especially jumpers bashing hunters. I ride Hunters. Love the challenge, love to watch it. Don't have any desire to do jumpers and frankly will watch the Grand Prix but that is it. However-I respect that there are people who love to do that just as others like dressage or eventing. Whatever happened to respect and tolerance?

          • After re-reading the letter, personally, I think it's hilarious! She's getting the exact rise out of everyone on this board that she probably intended! She's the Michael Moore of equestrian sports! Freedom of speech... wow!

            • I think that letter was totally uncalled for. I for one like watching the hunters. Aren't a lot of jumper classes more expensive to enter? So what is she talking about "let me throw my bank away"
No offense to anyone that knows her but I don't know her and from not knowing anything about her and reading that letter it sounds like she just didn't have what it took to make it in the hunters so has some sort of resentment. Not trying to bash her but the letter makes it sound like she likes the jumpers better because they don't take off if she drops her horse somewhere and they mess up a jump, as long as they make it over she can win.

              • Why does bashing Mississippi make an argument any more persuasive? Why does bashing someone's riding style make an argument any more valid?

The only reason that American showjumpers in the past were effective internationally is that they were probably all of them real foxhunters and learned braveness and boldness along with equitation.

Ms Lavigne has been known to foxhunt her jumpers. She's always around at the end of the day, in the huntsman's pocket. She may not be a pretty rider, but she's a very effective one under some pretty hairy conditions.

I'd say she got the rise she intended as we all took the hook.

Question--if you didn't ride "hunters" would you watch them? And when you do ride "hunters", how many spectators are there at your ring that aren't connected in some way with hunter riders?

And lastly, how many of you "hunter" riders are entering the handy hunter classes that are appearing at so many shows these days?

Well I do ride in hunters but at the shows when I am not riding in the classes I still love to watch. I see quite a few people that aren't connected to the rider or the horse or the trainer standing at the ring side and watching.

                  • I also love to watch the jumpers! I admit they are the life of the party at a show. Where else do you see such good crashes?!

And other thing, someone out there has to know Lila. Tell her to get her a$$ on here. Or perhaps she is lerking and is too chicken to put in her $0.02 again?!

                    • Regarding another letter in this week's COTH about the Show Horse of the Year. I thought that was a rather rude letter as well.

                      Comment

                      • I love riding horses. Be it western, dressage, eventing, hunter or jumper. I have my preference, but I do not belittle other aspects of riding, because we are all in it together. That said, I also think that we are entitled to our own opinions and freedom of speech (the Michael Moore reference made me chuckle ).

I also want to add that I do not believe that you MUST do the hunters to be a good jumper rider. It certainly can help, but is not a prerequisite.

                        • All the bashing and snide comments come from ones own self esteem issues and lack.

Yes it may have emmotionally wounded and slapped many of us regardless of our involvement in the specific discipline, but arguing no matter how aggressively is always best served by expressing how a person's actions statements have made one feel and the counter points to the claims.

Attacking someone's charcter especially of one you no nothing of and making sweeping generalizations is simply bitter and shows one's own flaws.

I have seen it a million times here. People who couldn't ride their way out of a wet paper bag attacking the Children's and Adult Jumpers...people who have no cencept of feel or distance or the ideal hunter slamming the 3' hunter classes.

People can hide behind loud and seemingly in control statements but those of us who know what is up..know .

                                • Watching Hunters is akin to watching a WP class. Everyone's done their dead-letter best to wear this-moment's fashion, follow a text-book definition of style/riding/look/etc and ride some color/saddle/braiding or banding tech. that is so-not-five-minutes ago.

there's nothing WRONG with it-it's just infernally boring to WATCH. The stands are somewhat empty until jumpers, or reining, or working cowhorse classes start- people want to see action, danger, speed, seat of your pants riding- not lap after lap after lap YAWN.

I thought it was a funny read.

                                  • Elgund, I would try and refute the arguments, but I have a hard time figuring out what they are (that's not a criticism of anything or anyone other than my own denseness).

All I could discern is that Lila doesn't like hunters for a number of reasons (I can argue with her reasons but I think ultimately, it all ends up as personal preference) so she wants to separate the organizations and the shows. However, I'm not really sure why not liking hunters would logically translate into that separation.

The only reason stated is that by separating the groups, you won't have to wait for any hunter classes before jumpers start. Fair enough, no one likes to wait. But is that really enough reason to give up all the benefits of having them combined? Benefits that include revenue to shows and the ease of showing in both disciplines within the same barn?

Aside from not liking waiting, the only reasons for splitting seem to be that hunters are boring, no one likes to watch them, hunter people can't ride, they're all cowards, the horses are lunged to death automotons, they cost too much money, etc.

Even if that were true (and I don't believe for one minute that it is), so what? Why split? How does what the hunters do hurt what the jumpers want to do (other than the waiting)? Will the hunter people somehow contaminate the jumpers with "hunter cooties" by being at the same show?

                                    I guess I'm missing something.

                                    • It's impossible to refute something so badly written. Like dogchushu I had difficulty following it. (Wonder where she went to college.)

But what it boils down to is she thinks hunters cost too much and she doesn't like to wait. Well, it's not her money so it's none of her business. As for the waiting, that's too bad. It's just part of the game. But there's really no need to be nasty about it.

                                        • Hunters are not boring, if you like watching them.... especially at the bigger shows, all divisions have excellent riders and horses...if you know what it takes to put in a beautiful hunter round and can appreciate a well ridden and well jumped round.....then it is exciting..

I am so excited for my friends who do the hunters and clap as loud as anyone for them when they nail that last fence after a perfect round...I am sorry yes the clothes and the styles are more prevelant..but to honestly think that is all there is to it is simply ignorance...it is like a fine wine...any sport is..those that know what it takes to turn out the best performance know the hard work and the concentration and dedication that is involved....and believe me there are PLENTY of people at the shows who LOVE WATCHING the hunters....and hold their breath whe a favorite or a friend or simply watching a flawless round...it takes a lot to be perfect and whether you agree with the "Standards" or not....it is a hell of a job at the A level to go in the ring after round after round of flawless trips and lay down the winning one, it requires feel and balance and rhythym...something not everyone has on equal levels...every move has to be quiet and Empathetic..yet workmanlike and flowing and relaxed...

That said that is my view it doesn't affect me one way or the other if someone doesn't agree.

and a final note I do not believe the H/J should be seperate..too much is tied together and it would acomplish nothing but add to the already bewlidering rules and associations and organizations that pop up each year.
