Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

As far as plowing through the idiots that cut you off go...been there, done that, got the t-shirt.

I was hauling a new horse home about ten years ago, it was drizzling out and the roads were wet but I had specifically chosen a time of day when traffic was light *and* avoided the highway. Four lane road, I was in the left lane with plenty of distance between myself and the cars ahead of me slowing down well in advance for a red light coming up. Not one but two cars decided to zip in front of me and had to brake hard to keep from running the light. The second they did that I knew 1) I was going to hit the car in front of me and 2) Slamming on the brakes wouldn't do a damn thing to keep it from happening. I remember making a conscience, split-second decision to brake just a little harder and hope for the best. I slammed that car in front of me so hard I pushed it into the first car that cut me off, caused a three car accident. Luckily I was going slow enough at that point nothing crazy happened in the trailer, horse was fine.

Three uninvolved witnesses pulled over and stayed until the police arrived and they all told the officers the accident was the result of me being cut off. One of the women that cut me off (the first one) even admitted to the cop what she'd done but golly gee, how could she know a truck pulling a trailer can't brake that fast? So what if the roads are wet?

I got the ticket, in Ohio if you rear-end someone you are automatically at fault. Insurance went through the roof. Vehicle in front of me got totaled out because of frame damage and the first car had over 5k in damages. Not a mark on my truck save for a little paint on the bumper that easily buffed out.

One of the officers bawled the women out pretty bad, told them in no uncertain terms the wreck was their fault and if there was any way possible he could cite them he would have. The first woman was apologetic and was bawling by the time the officer got done with her. The second was just a smug beyotch about the whole thing, didn't care one bit. The ticket was expensive, my insurance was ridiculous for several years after that, my consolation was that I totaled the bitchy one's car and at least one of them (hopefully both) will think twice about cutting people off after that. Wasn't really worth it though. I certainly didn't hit them on purpose although I had dreamed plenty of times about ramming my truck grill up many a soccer mom's SUV's ass. I would definitely choose avoiding an accident over teaching someone a lesson no matter how tempting the thought is, especially knowing how much it costs in the long run.

That law needs to change, especially with witnesses and cameras. The one was smug and bitchy because she knew caused an accident and got off scot-free with a new car. There are people who do that crap for a "living."

I have decided that most people want to die on the bumper of my truck. I, alas, don't care to give them what they want. People are CLUELESS.

I don't have a rig (at least not yet - kinda need a horse first), but I have driven with my late aunt in hers and gone along with my dad in his semi (he was an over the road truck driver). I lost count of the multiple people who thought it was ok to cut off his rig.

Not to mention the people who think it's ok to run a red light. My uncle had to deal with that (also a OTR truck driver) in his rig. Didn't end well for the guy (and passenger) who ran the red light and my uncle was saddled with the guilt that he just couldn't stop in time.

Bingo. I was very, very surprised she didn't get some ambulance-chaser to sue my insurance company. Believe you me, I was waiting for it to happen.

Amen to whoever made the comment about leaving emotions out of driving. Hauling horses (or driving any kind of rig for that matter) and road rage just do *not* go well together.

Eh, I think some emotion is appropriate, otherwise I just wouldn't care! But extremes don't serve anyone well. I can be calm and pissed at the same time. Dealt with being hit, getting us to safety, etc. just fine, but if you'd put the idiot who hit me in the same room immediately after, I would have throttled her.

My horn and a certain finger on my hand have gotten ample use now that I've been hauling my horse.

My post seemed hard hearted ... Here's my story.

Truck and trailer headed downhill on a two lane road. Traffic both ways were bumper to bumper. I left enough distance in front of me to stop. On coming traffic was stopped by a car waiting to turn left across my lane. The car used my buffer space to make the left. The car behind the first also turned left. The third car also tried to turn left. His bad luck that the turning traffic stopped trapping him in my lane. I couldn't steer left into now moving traffic and car #3 was stopped broadside with cars in front of him. I laid on the brakes and horn. As I closed, I locked eyes with the man in the right rear passenger seat. I knew he was about to die. Fortunately, the traffic block moved ahead and car #3 moved out of my path just in time.

Since that looks like a 2-horse trailer, I hope horse #3 was in a second trailer.

I found a dash camera for under $100. Not sure how to post links but ... http://www.spytecinc.com/hd-car-came...Fe4-Mgodlh8A8g I think a camera is a good idea for people frequently finding themselves being cut off. Perhaps if you live in a no-fault or "the rear ender always gets the blame" state you should contact your state representatives to get that changed. If you have PROOF the accident wasn't your fault it's ridiculous that your insurance goes up.
That's fine, many of us have slid down this slippery slope and became very happy (and broke) doing it. We may not have a retirement, but we have memories ...

Would private dash cam video be admissible here, should something go to court? I'm not sure what the law is on that. Sounds like it wouldn't help even in those states where the rear ended is always to blame (like the prior poster with the story where even witnesses came forward but still had to ticket the back end driver).

Eek on some of the stories here. After my trailer accident, I wouldn't haul again for a long time. Then my trainer was injured and I had to do all the hauling or no one could show. These stories are reminding how much I dreaded those first times pulling horses again. Especially since they belonged to others...more pressure!

Hmm. I think it would be considered admissible?

Would be interesting to see how something like that would play out.

In my case, I was told by the police the rear-ender (me) had to be cited regardless of circumstances because the assumption is, since I rear-ended them I was following too closely. The fact that an accident could be caused by a driver being cut off was something the law did not consider. Also, in a multiple car pile-up (like the one I was in the back end of) the last driver's insurance is responsible for all cars involved. The reasoning behind that I was told, was that the car I hit wouldn't have hit the car in front of them had I not "caused" the initial accident. Of course the cop explained it much better than I probably just did, I'm just paraphrasing a conversation from about a decade ago (ah, how well I remember the incident though!)

The cop that wrote me the ticket was pretty apologetic, between that and the dressing-down he gave the other two drivers I'm sure he knew I was driving safely. The crying lady learned a lesson I'm sure and as for the bitchy one, here's hoping karma caught up with her with some explosive diarrhea while she was wearing her favorite dress.

All it takes for a photograph to be admitted into evidence in my state (and under the federal rules of evidence) is that the person who took it be able to identify it as an accurate representation of the circumstances existing at the time it was taken. No big deal.

I do a lot of highway driving and have recently started seeing more and more semis with the signs/stickers on the back, arrow to the left "passing side" and arrow to the right with "suicide." Not quite the same, but...

Honestly I think that there needs to be more taught in drivers ed and asked on driving exams about safe driving around big rigs, after all we can't count on common sense for anything anymore. While we all know that it takes an extraordinary amount of time to stop, it seems most people legitimately did not pay attention in high school physics and truly lack the understanding of, or even have knowledge of the basic laws of physics.

I live on Long Island and drive a Chevy 1500 as my normal vehicle. I get cut off so many times a day I can't even keep track. For whatever reason people want to come up with, they don't like to be behind larger vehicles, and around here that includes me. Don't even get me started on the whole general disregard for the rules of the road here. That old saying of the best offense is a good defense is absolutely true when it comes to driving a trailer, be prepared for the stupid people and you will arrive with less of a chance of giving yourself a heart attack!!

"Agree, but there are times when you only have a small amount of space to stop before you do ram into them. And I'm not sure who technically would get the ticket in that accident. Because isn't it automatic that if you rear-end someone, you get the ticket? How can they prove that the person cut you off unless a good samaritan stops as a witness? And let's be honest, no one stops for fender benders just to witness."

Have you ever watched on youtube the videos from Russia with the CRAZY car wrecks? Most of those are private individuals with dash cams. It might be a great way to use a "Go Pro".

I posted prior to reading ALL of the posts. I still would think a good lawyer could help you if you had a dash cam showing that it was due to the other person cutting you off.

I think that the driver who was cut off would have had a good chance of getting a nolle/dismissal in court, regardless of the law. They could also sue the cars who cut them off and seek not only any damage to the truck but the increased insurance costs. You might not win, but you might, and it would certainly be satisfying if you did.
