Forum rules and no-advertising policy
As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.
Board Rules
1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.
This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.
Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.
Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.
2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.
3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.
4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.
Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.
Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.
Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:
Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.
Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.
Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.
Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.
Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.
Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.
Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.
5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.
6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.
If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.
Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.
7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.
8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.
Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

I was thinking the same thing. It's bad enough you have to attend this party (although going is the right thing to do), but "expecting" employees to dress as if they will try out the pool is ridiculous.Proud owner of a Slaughter-Bound TB from a feedlot, and her surprise baby...!

The nano second I got an invite 2 weeks from a show
I would have said I had a prior commitment. However, you didn't. I don't do company functions. I would never do a company function that required anything remotely resembling swimming attire. Wear a summer dress, ankle length, spring for a pedicure and wear a pair a dark sunglasses. Look mildly interested until you tell the big cheese how fabulous his house/pool is. When he's seen you, appear to go into the house to use the loo, get in your car and drive home. Go ride/groom whatever your horse or just get a good nights sleep so you can show up early Monday, take a day off during the week and go show.
I have never ever gone to a company function. I always have a prior commitment, speaks of someone that has their live very well scheduled. Not everyone will go and not going shouldn't make you subject to punitive crap from your boss. Really. Don't call if you don't want to, just don't go. When or if you are asked why, just apologize, say I'm sorry, it couldn't be helped, sniff, put your hand over your mouth, look sad and go to the ladies room for 10 minutes. Someone will ask if you're alright, say you're fine now, and if pressed say you'd just prefer not to talk about it. After a week, nobody will care.

If, as you say - heaven forbid - she DID get hurt - well, it happened on SUNDAY! LOL Yeah, I know, lie upon lie.... never a good idea. But, as I said, I darn well avoided "company" events that were not scheduled within working hours for 23 years without any negative consequences. Still, OP knows what her job's corporate culture is, and it sounds like she needs to attend. Frankly, that would honestly bring ON a migraine for me, not a fake one!Originally posted by hundredacres View PostIf you say you have a headache and godforbid you get hurt on Saturday, and come in with a cast on Monday, it will look really bad. SO I say do both, or just don't go and tell them you can't get out of your previous plans.

This is the excuse my daughter wants to use to get out of working at the sale at the store. It should work since the boss refuses to pay OT and working that w/e would be OT.. Still, they'd rather she works, then takes two days off. Well, that particular w/e, she wants her regular days off!!Originally posted by Skeezix View PostThe person that helps me with stalls on the weekends or whenever always uses the "I have to work at the barn" excuse
"Oh golly, they are all going to a horse show, so I have to be there to take care of everything" has worked very well for her.
Whenever she has said she didn't want to go to some function, I always reply "Just blame it on us." And she does
OP, why can't you reschedule the lesson?

Serpentine belts are also good for instant 'dead in the water'.Originally posted by Dramapony_misty View PostCould you...ummm...have car trouble that day? But contact people when it's too late for anyone to offer to drive you? Starters are a good thing to blame (trust me...my husband really did just have to replace his. Killed the car, but was a quick fix).
Driving 2 hours each way on your own time so someone can show off his "estate" is ridiculous. Everyone knows my horses pretty much come first outside of mandatory work hours (and sometimes during work if there is an emergency). Me? I would ride.
And if you do decided to go ask if you can expense the mileage! HAHA!"Let's face it -- Beezie Madden is NOT looking over her shoulder for me anytime

@Dewey I could & would have pulled that off in my 20's or 30's but at almost 50 I know that kind of schedule cramming seriously exhausts me!
But good news, my instructor has 3 spots during the next week I can change lesson to, and is willing to wait for me to pick which one until Monday when I know which will work best for my job. Flexible instructors are great for Full time +++ workers, I must tell her how much I appreciate this as much as I can, I'm sure it's a pain for her.
Anyway, I'll put the good excuses away for another day...
Thanks for convincing me to do the right thing guys

You agreed to show up. Do it.
If this is a "hire at will" position , it really doesn't matter how awesome you were last year or last month.

It's not supposed to break 70 in SE PA on Saturday, I can't imagine it's going to be much warmer in Jersey. Yep I'm my own sole provider, so this job pays for my horse stuff & will enable me to pay off the mortgage on my small farmette in 3.5 years. So I should stop complaining and appreciate I have a pretty good situation, worth sucking up to the fancy schmancy owners a few times a year, for a few more years!Originally posted by Lostboy View PostIs this what pays for your horse stuff?
Yeah coworkers have been discussing the bathing suit thing. I believe the consensus is we have something "bathing suit like" on underneath a significant cover up. And the weather forecast is helping, I'm not as worried about the gleaming white legs now, lol.

Sometimes being in a leadership position means you just have to suck it up and go. I've been finding that out over the last couple of years, and around here there seems to be a monthly gathering of some sort, or more "mandatory fun" which is almost never fun. Unfortunately it comes with the job and the rank, and since that job pays for your fun things, you've already acknowledged that it's best to attend. But at the same time, since you've committed to going and can get the lesson rescheduled, try to enjoy yourself. It can be done at these types of events, and a pool party seems like a pretty good time if you're not dead set on being miserable.

PS, not sure you have to worry about the pool, it's supposed to be in the high 60's on Saturday in PA, a bit chilly for swimming anyway! My CANTER cutie Chip and IHSA shows!

Do not make up excuses. Just put in a very brief appearance, thank your host and apologetically say you unfortunately are not able to stay. If they ask why, you do not have to give detail, just say it is something else that had been scheduled previously that you 'cannot' cancel out of.
ETA, one thing you might choose to do, and really should if you have the guts, is just show up in your riding clothes. Mention that you compete in equestrian sports and you need to leave the party for a last training session with your coach. That is true, indicates that you are not just a 'company suck up' like the rest of them, LOL, that you actually have a life outside the office.
If you don't wear the riding clothes, do not wear a bathing suit, if it makes you uncomfortable. Poolside lounging attire, such as nice capris, a cute hat, and a pretty top is just fine.Jeanie

I would never wear bathing attire to a company event; however, I work at a big company and I think they know that there would be very big HR repercussions even suggesting it. I can't even imagine that being suggested these days in any size company.
Sadly, though, I would go to the event. Wouldn't stay long and I'd be pissed enough that I might expense my mileage.. It's ridiculous to ask people drive two hours one way to stroke the ego of an higher up. I'd be mad, mad, mad but do it. I guess there is just some crap you have to deal with for a good job. Doesn't make it right, though.
