Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Put me in the You should go to the picnic for at least an hour group. 4 hrs drive plus 1 hour at picnic...makes for a miserably long day, but is there no way you could ride really early, or later when you get home?

Careful mentioning car trouble...too easy for someone to offer to come pick you up and give you a ride. Then you're REALLY stuck, can't leave early if you ride with someone!

Might be wise to go to the party .. and then use this as a reminder to move towards a better work/life balance in general. Schedule those lessons regularly - not just at the last moment.

It won't help you this trip, but if you go & get sh!t faced at the picnic, you may be asked not to go to the next one. But this is sailor logic and may not be the best career advice (although the sailor who suggested this tack to deal with mandatory fun has since been promoted a couple of times...)

Is there any way you could take some personal time during the week and reschedule your lesson? Since you've already accepted the party invitation it'll be harder to back out.

I do understand, there are a lot of things I'd rather do than hang around with some of my co-workers on my free time and I've had to do some creative juggling to fit in lessons once in a while. But if you really dislike these people maybe it's time to look for another job. I'm not particularly close to most of my co-workers but I can say that with just a few exceptions I do like them. I think I'd be miserable if I had to work all day with people I didn't like.

Sigh, and the responsible rational voices are getting through to me Especially the idea of trying to schedule some personal time off the following week in lieu of Sat lesson, I probably could pull that off.

Now my focus returns to how to handle my lily white legs versus well tanned arms issue. We are expected to dress as if we could try out the pool, though I doubt anyone but the kids will actually do so. Sigh, got through whole summer without the need to appear in public in a bathing suit... guess my luck has run out...

I am not sure why you lied the other day about having a migraine either. If you are upper level I assume you have people that work under you. Would you prefer they are honest with you or lie to you about everything?

When I can not make it into work because I have a sick dog or a sick horse that is what I tell my boss. When I want to take some time off to go trail riding in the park, that is what I tell my boss. I do not fake an illness.

Dressing such that you can try the pool probably means have your suit in the car if you need it, not show up in your bikini.

Since you've already called in sick this week and you're senior management, now I think you really just need to go. I know how you feel, being a grownup does suck sometimes, though. I presume you manage to ride on some weekdays, when a full 8 hours of your day is occupied by work. For this party, if you drive 2hrs, spend 2 hrs which is a respectable amt of time, and then leave, that's still much less time than a normal workday. Plus extra brownie points for making such a huge effort to attend even though you have other obligations that you need to get back and attend to.

I get that your instructor may not be available at any other time, but you could at least still get a high quality ride in. You are probably more ready for the show than you think (or conversely, if you don't have your $hit together one week before the show, one lesson isn't going to fix it anyway. ) Maybe get a barn mate to video you, and do a self-review after your ride. Or sit down with instructor and watch together.

The person that helps me with stalls on the weekends or whenever always uses the "I have to work at the barn" excuse "Oh golly, they are all going to a horse show, so I have to be there to take care of everything" has worked very well for her.

Whenever she has said she didn't want to go to some function, I always reply "Just blame it on us." And she does

I don't go to after-work/weekend work functions. I tell my co-workers, "Are you kidding? They have to pay me to associate with you people!"

Spray tan. Tankini or regular suit with detachable skirt (pareau?)

Re "illness" excuses. If you haven't abused them, you usually won't get called on them unless corporate culture is really paranoid. I worked at one firm for 23 years and NEVER went to the company picnic. NEVER. Never gave an excuse, either, beyond "committed to do something else..." Also, as I said, if you have established that you DO get migraines, people are usually sympathetic. Not the same, as "I 'don't feel good'" (unspecified) or "I have the flu" (but are over it in 24 hours.)

                          Ah well, try to enjoy.

Self tanners terrify me, so a professional spray tan would be the way to go. If that's not in the budget (or schedule), they have great "tinted lotions" that you can use. I think Jergins makes the one I use, but just stop at your local drug store and check out the selection.

In 3 days you won't look "tan" but at least it takes the glow in the dark look away. I use it twice a day if I forget until the last minute, and it darkens just a tiny bit each time. This is nice because I'm not patient or careful so I can avoid orange streaks this way.

Can you possibly schedule your lesson very early in the morning, get cleaned up at the barn, and go directly from there to the party in order to put in an appearance? Maybe your barn has a shower (ours does). It would be a long day, but it could work...and it would be better than trying to leave the party early to go to your lesson.

I really don't recommend either skipping the party (you'd be missed) or lying to get out of it.

Good lord, what kind of freaking mind-control company is this, that your CEO would be offended if you don't walk around in bathing suits just because he put in a new pool? Do you work for Napoleon?

If you don't intend to swim, don't wear a bathing suit. I sure as hell would not, and it has nothing to do with body-shame stuff-- it's just feels waaaay too personal. I certainly have no interest in seeing my male counterparts with no shirt on. No HR manager with half a brain cell would ever tolerate a work gathering where employees were required or pressured by managers to expose their bodies in swimsuits if they didn't want to do so. Sure hope the senior mgmt team you're on is not communicating that requirement to downstream employees.
(I know you didn't ask for a career critique but sheesh this company sounds really bizarre. )

Could you...ummm...have car trouble that day? But contact people when it's too late for anyone to offer to drive you? Starters are a good thing to blame (trust me...my husband really did just have to replace his. Killed the car, but was a quick fix).

Driving 2 hours each way on your own time so someone can show off his "estate" is ridiculous. Everyone knows my horses pretty much come first outside of mandatory work hours (and sometimes during work if there is an emergency). Me? I would ride.

And if you do decided to go ask if you can expense the mileage! HAHA!

I plan to pull on my big girl panties and go to the #$%@! party. Now it occurs to me I don't own a bathing suit LOL. Fortunately they all seem to be on sale

@Dewey I could & would have pulled that off in my 20's or 30's but at almost 50 I know that kind of schedule cramming seriously exhausts me!

But good news, my instructor has 3 spots during the next week I can change lesson to, and is willing to wait for me to pick which one until Monday when I know which will work best for my job. Flexible instructors are great for Full time +++ workers, I must tell her how much I appreciate this as much as I can, I'm sure it's a pain for her.

Anyway, I'll put the good excuses away for another day... Thanks for convincing me to do the right thing guys

oh, and opt for a nice "beachy" maxi dress or something. That should be ok for "poolside attire". Perfect if you have the typical glowing white equestrian's legs since they are ankle length.

I think it's risky to lie. I would try to arrange both. I know it's a long drive for an hour, but there are still more hours in the day....squeeze it all in and explain that you made previous arrangement and can't change.

If you say you have a headache and godforbid you get hurt on Saturday, and come in with a cast on Monday, it will look really bad. SO I say do both, or just don't go and tell them you can't get out of your previous plans.
