Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

      I always meet CL people in a public place (horse show, strip mall, etc.)

          eBay is good when you want to sell a saddle quickly.

          But the current system is making it less appealing.

          I've also had good luck listing on equestrian sites, but you still need to deal with Paypal, which also takes its cut.

          When I've done "live" transactions (such as Craig's list) I generally meet people in a public place or send items to be sold to my husband's place of business (warehouse) to avoid having strangers come to the house.

            At this point, I'm just fine with that. Yes, our saddle sold in 7 days but the hassle that is coming with having to deal with this isn't worth it. Had the seat on our saddle been smaller, we'd have sold it in the barn. In the future, anything that I'm not using will either be sold within our microcosm, or I will drive it the 1.5 hr to So. Pines and consign it or it will just sit and gather dust.

            It really chaps my hide that b/c someone's bad actions are so overt and there's a chance that despite all the evidence I provide, I can end up being stuck with having to refund all of the purchase price and shipping + selling fees, thus paying for this lady to try a saddle, maybe damage it, and take up a bunch of my time dealing with it. Yes, I could just give her all the money back and hope for the best but the principle of the thing...I don't wish to be part of rewarding bad behavior.

                As far as ebay goes, they don't have any real ability to review the cases (what do they know about saddles) so they always have the same resolution.

                She will get to return it, she will have to pay return shipping and you will be refunded your selling fees, but you will still be out your initial shipping.

                Not trying to be mean/discouraging, but as a frequent user of ebay that is just how SNAD cases work. They never force the buyer to keep the item.

                  I sold my really nice saddle through consignment. The fee was 20% and well worth it.

                  My cheaper saddle is on craigslist. I won't sell anything on eBay. Not worth the fees (from eBay and paypal) or the stress.

                    eBay has always made me nervous, probably because I just don't understand it well enough. I just sold a saddle to Maryland Tack Exchange. Great experience. I would deal with them again any day. Sold in a week, didn't have to wait for it to sell on consignment etc.

                        It doesn't settle until Wednesday; then there's a 48 hour window for me to respond. Nothing is settled yet. I've got photos and affidavits...and a friend is answering for me since I'll be out of the country. I realize the odds are not in my favor according to what everyone says but I've proven the saddle was accurately described and I've also asked the buyer for photos of the alleged damage...no response so far...and if she ends up sending the saddle back and it is damaged, I will make the time to file an appeal & a complaint against her, a police report, etc. Yes, life is short, but what's so nuts about this whole thing is that if she had just asked for a trial, I would have said no and we'd never be in this situation. For that matter, I've seen the horse she was shopping for on her FB account and I could've told her the saddle wouldn't fit simply from the photo (horse obviously needs a W or XW). All this woman had to do was communicate with me...I'm not unreasonable. To have her lie and behave like this has really offended my sensibilities. (I know...boo hoo for me.)

                        Anyway - regardless of what happens now, lesson learned. NO MORE EBAY. EVER.

                            Cannot respond on the rude buyers but...
                            shortly Ebay will require that the sale is not complete until the buyers actually pays for it. This means until Paypal has the buyers money...the item is still for sale and anyone can buy it.
                            This will suck for those who want to combine all purchase charges..

                            Chaps me when someone buys something from my Ebay store...then ignores my communications about payment for days or weeks. I state in the listing payment is due in 7 days..On the 8th...I now file a non paying bidder complaint. Then ban the buyer and go on to the next sale.

                            Ebay is not the seller/buyers dream site it used to be...but it does have it uses.

                              If there was damage to the saddle upon receipt, why was that not the first thing she mentioned. If I receive something that is damaged enough to bother me, I am not going to go try it on my horse.

                                That is exactly what I'm hoping...that common sense will prevail. It's just been something else in this land where the person making the accusations has to PROVE it to be in eBay land where I'm assumed by eBay to be guilty of having misled the buyer. It would be obvious to a 5th grader that this woman is just trying to get her way and not be accountable.

                                  The problem is that the people who review claims seem to be clueless and sometimes barely literate. And they are clearly following policies heavily slanted in the buyer's favor. I hope I am wrong, but I think eBay will find against you and make you accept the return. BUT if you cause a big enough stink eBay may reimburse you so the liability is on them. If you're lucky AND if you cause a big, huge, giant stink.

                                    To combine charges, I don't see why you couldn't just offer the discount for combined shipping, etc in the invoice when sent.

                                    Sounds like this is something they are going to help protect sellers...and their own a$$es from having to do a lot of cases for nonpaying bidders.

                                      Like I've said before, I have had many, many more positive Ebay transactions and very few gripes. That said, I am very glad you are kicking up a fuss. Sellers need to kick up a fuss before this kind of behavior gets out of hand. Ebay needs to start seeing that this can make their shares take a hit.

                                        My guess is that large retailers, which have become the predominant type of seller there, don't care about returns as much as the little guy. So they flock to Ebay and don't demand much service other than a huge set of buyers. Those retailers are set up to deal with returns and absorb the cost.

                                        Ebay follows the money and provides the kind of service that maximizes the number of transactions. They don't care who is making 'em.

                                          If I never sold on Ebay I would never sell my saddles. The market here is just waaaaay too small to really sell anything. Fortunately I have had only good luck and happy buyers. I am still waiting on a saddle to arrive that I purchased about a week and a half ago. No tracking info. It wasn't expensive, but I'm not looking forward to having to complain if it doesn't show up.
