Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

I have another one for everyone. This book is about a girl who grows up on a TB breeding farm with her father. They find her father dead in the breeding shed, apparently from falling down when he was drunk and hitting his head. Girl is upset and when sitting outside one night, sees lights on out there. She goes to investigate and finds them doing midnight breedings, which wasn't too unusual since the stud they have apparently won't breed during the day. But while she is walking back to her apartment, she goes through the stud barn and there is the stud that is supposedly in the breeding shed at that moment.
So she goes on this long journey trying to find out what is going on and it turns out the stud they were using to breed was stolen and was being hidden on their farm disgused as the owners trail riding horse. They were breeding him under the name of the big famous stud they owned because it turns out he is sterile or something like that but he was a KY Derby winner, blah blah blah and they could get big time stud fees from him.
So did any of that make any sense at all I could swear that the name of this book is Dark Horse but I can't find it anywhere. There is a book called Dark Horse, but it doesn't have this description.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

This is Ride a Dark Horse by Lynn Hall.

      • Pounding Hooves by Dorothy Grunbock Johnston. It's a Christian book but it's got some good old corny horse stuff in it if you don't mind all the talking to God and such.

It's about a young girl who finds the most beautiful horse int he world, a palomino arab, that is untamable. But a rich girl buys the horse after the poor girl tames it and teaches it tricks. What will poor girl do?

        • MoW... I remember "The Horse that had Everything", set in New England? I'm pretty sure the horses name was Sans Perdu though

Anyone remember a book about a pony named Windy Foot? Or the book about the horse named Vanity Fair? Or a book about horses that got lost in a snowstorm and ended with the birth of a colorful leopard appy named Fantasia?

Funny how I can still remember the horses' names but not the titles or the authors.

Yes, it was set in Vermont.

"Sans Peur" was the name. ( Sire was Mon Oncle; dam - Never Fear).

Rick Ballou(sp?) was the boy's name. He had a ground floor bedroom, and he and his father built sort of a stall or run-in for San outside his bedroom window.
His father was a painter. His best friend (a girl) rode a Morgan. Rick's mother had died when he was very young. He called his father by his first name (don't recall that at this time)

I still have this book, after so many, many years; I ran across it in my sister's storage about 7 years ago. I think she still has most of my horse books.

And yes; I have a frightening memory for my childhood books.

The Pictoral Life Story of Misty? It was by Margurite Henry, but it is the true story behind her books! How Misty came to Illinois to live with her when she wrote the book and about Misty's growing up. she also goes into a lot of the background that led to some of her other books. The pictures on the book are fantastic!!!

I loved her books. Summer Pony was a good one too. Complete w/illustrations by Savitt.

dbtoo: Vanity Fair - I think that was one of the stories I had mentioned earlier. Girl outgrows her pony. Goes to horseshow and makes friends with beautiful mare's owner. Girl gets to keep beautiful mare over the summer. I think she shows it once or twice too. Does this ring a bell or am I really losing it (again)?

There is one other drugging incident in the book with a horse that had been shipped in to the barn that got sick. Turns out horse had been given Reserpine and had a reaction that turned into pneumonia that killed the horse.

That was one thing I liked about Jean Doty's books, she didn't hesitate to show the downsides of showing that are out there!

When I going through my books looking for Monday Horses, I stumbled on two books I loved when I was a kid, haven't seen them mentioned here yet though!!

Two great books are Star-Crossed Stallion and Star-Crossed Stallions Big Chance by Patrick Lawson. The stories are about an Arabian stallion named Ajaz that is imported from Arabia and is labled a bad luck horse. Horse is befriended by a local boy, Roger, who had lived in Arabia while his dad was assigned there for buisness, boy helps horse overcome his homesickness. When bad things start happening around Ajaz it is up to Roger to prove that Ajaz isn't cursed and that someone else is behind all the bad things that are happening!!!

The Second book is also about Roger and Ajaz and their adventures in teaching Ajaz to be a dressage horse. This story takes place at a farm in Kentucky and is a great book for any one who loves dressage!!!

                              • It seems that real events trigger a lot of plot lines.

For example, recent titles have a lot of stories that parallel the insurance killings. (To the point where I think, Oh no, not THIS again. )

Another common theme is the ringer stallion - famous stallion isn't producing well so no-name but good producing stallion is used under his name, producing stakes winners with fake pedigrees. I have no doubt that this has happened, but I was wondering if there was a case in the TB industry where it was actually discovered that I missed?

                                  • MOst of the books mentioned on this thread have brought back memories! I kept all my pony books, but from lending them out through the years I have only a small percentage of my collection left. I read mostly books from the UK, my favourites of which are by the PUllein-Thompson sisters.

do you remember the series by Josephine PUllein-thompson about the kids in pony club run by Major HOlbrook? The series features Noel, a poor girl who own Sonnet, and later gets an Anglo Arab called Truant in exchange for training him and another horse. Also who can forget the Radcliffe family, a rouwdy pack of siblings who ride beautifully but are rather loud and obnoxious. and there is a snotty rich girl who has a bunch of show ponies, one was named Golden Wonder and her mother is always nattering about how much better her daughter is than everyone else.

Patircia Leitch wrote the Jinny series, and does anyone remember the Jackie seires, she has Misty and her best freind Babs has a New Forest pony named Patch?

Lastly, I once read a bittter sweet story about a lonely girl who finds a stallion called Sabre, rides him in a big race and the real owner takes him back. Somehow she arranges to keep his foal, out of a cranky mare some farmer owns. She takes the foal, a filly named Scimitar, to some relative's lesson barn and expects her to behave as nicely as her sire, but she's mean-spirited and the girl winds up in the hospital. Somehow once again, they trade the mean filly (who can run like the wind) for Sabre, and the girl is happy at last to have her beloved gentleman horse back. Anyone got the title on hand?

                                    Comment

                                    • This one is indelibly etched into Momdogs (I luvluvluv her) brain because she mispronounced it for years, not knowing the English trick of reversing "er" as "re" and still saying "er"

So the title of the book (drumroll please) is "SaBER, the Horse from the Sea" even though it's spelled "SaBREE"

                                      • Kachoo, I am sure that YOU would love the old British pony books. In my collection are:
Patricia Leitch and the whole Jinny series about her chestnut arab mare called Shantih which she rescued from a circus and they live in the Scottish highlands with her family and follow their progress and all the problems that they overcome together.
Patricia Leitch and A Pony of Our Own (1970) Jean and her brother work all winter to buy their own pony for just over 70 pounds lol. When they manage to buy their pony, they spend the rest of the summer getting ready for their first gymkhana.
Patricia Leitch and Dream of Fair Horses...my absolute favourite! Gillian wishes for nothing more to ride at the Horse of the Year show, yet her family are poor, but by a stroke of luck her father sells his book and they come to live at his childhood home in the country, which is delapidated and falling down around their ears, yet Gillian meets the pony of her dreams and is allowed to ride her....won't give away the rest lol.
The Jill Series by Ruby Ferguson is just gorgeous for its priceless language and pony talk, it is British from about the 1960's I think.
I have another by Caroline Akrill who wrote a trilogy, I only have the first one which is Eventer's Dream, another British book, more for teenagers about a girl who comes to be a groom for some rather odd but well meaning people and goes about various sneaky ways to get her dream horse sponsored to do three day events, this is from the early 80's.
I am still collecting them lol
BTW I truly believe that nothing can beat the good old British pony book, I am writing a pony book myself aimed at the 10-12 year old. My writing style on the BB's is not indicative of the way I am writing my book, don't worry lol.I cannot type to save myself hehe
