Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

You know what always bothered me about the Black Stallion series? The Black was supposed to be a 17h Arabian (as if) and Alec was always able to vault onto his bare back. Ok, I have a 17h warmblood and I'm fairly nimble but I can't (nor will he let me) vault on to him. Then when the movie came out Kelly Reno was like 6' tall and the horse was 14 hands!!!!!!!!!!
Another book I had read, can't think of the name, was about his girl (think her name was Cindy) that lived in some outback town that had a black wild stallion that always showed up when she was in trouble and fought off an angry mountain lioness - I think it was Thunder?

Roxy- yep. that was Thunder! It used to be a TV show too, on Sat mornings. Not only did he fight off mountain lions, he battles rattlesnakes and bad guys too
Loved that show. Hey, I was like, 8.

June, I was thinking that it was Fury, too. But, then, I'm the only one in my workplace who remembers the show!

How about the Golden Stallion series??

But wasn't the Black supposed to be the product of the Sheikh's careful incorporation of TB racing blood into his Arabian breeding stock? That explained his size...

Timber Trail Riders!!!! OOOOHHHHH I loved "Hollywood Horse" where one of the girls goes out to be the stunt double for "Daphne" the teenage star of "Alexander the Great" The highlight is when she jumps "Bucephalus" over a gaping ravine.

I was maybe 8 or 9 when I read this while sailing with my parents. Who were amused by my pronunciation of "Dap-ne" and "Bu-cep-hail-us". Come to think of it, it may have been that book that also taught me that Penelope is not pronounced "Pen-a-lope!!

I have all the Timber Trail books AND all the Golden Stallion books!

I discovered the Golden Stallion series one summer at the library when I was visiting my Grandparents in Chicago. I couldn't wait to go visit Grandma And Grandpa every summer just so I could get a chance to reread those books!

Linda Craig! That was it! I LOOOOOOOOVED those books, and it was tragic that the library at my junior high didn't have the whole series.

I also loved "For Love of a Horse." Those kids got to ride ponies to school every day.

Another favorite of mine is "Beauty" by Bill Wallace. It has some gut-wrenching moments, but it's a great story full of wit and humor, and it DOES have a good ending. Blind Outlaw, by ??? was a good one, too.

I remember reading a book in grade school...I have no idea what it was called...but the heroine's horse was a black and white paint named Panda. Funny how I remember the horses' names, and little else!

I adored all the "Serendipity" books having to do with horses...particularly the one with the spolied rotten princess and the white stallion. She has to learn patience in order to catch him.

Ooh, that's another good one: The White Stallion. Family is headed out west in a Conestoga wagon, little girl rides on pack horse, girl falls asleep and pack horse wanders away. They join up with a herd of wild mustangs that start biting the girl (because she's sitting on...and tied to...the sacks of corn the pack horse was carrying). Then the white stallion comes to her rescue. Very, very cute.

Anyone remember Hard Luck Horse by Fern Brown? That was another favorite of mine. The horse's name in the book is Woody Dip ( I love that name), and how he needs an operation to keep him from going blind. Lots of barrel racing action in the book too!

Girl goes out riding her pony Panda, hears neighing coming from an old stable on her property, but upon investigation finds no horse inside...does that sound familiar? I really liked this book!

I don't know that one, but Lynn Hall has written quite a few really good titles. The whole "Dragon" series is excellent, as is the slightly more adult "Flying Changes." What I liked most about Flying Changes is that it's a very small story about ordinary things, rather than "Great Events" or adventures. Just a simple challenge... while experiencing a spartan life as a midwestern teen, can she teach her young horse flying changes in time for the buyer to see them?

(Hmmm. I guess I should add this as a review!)

I'm planning a trip to Boston in October and need to save up mucho dinero for a visit to Cambridge and horse book seller par excellence Robin Bledsoe. I LOVE this thread - I am going to have to hit Amazon and ebay and restock. I teach middle school, and we have many of the Doty books - I read them about once or twice a year. Wasn't there one where the girl finds some prehistoric horse that is living in some isolated cave and she has to figure out how to keep society from disrupting their pristine sanctuary??
I would LOVE to reread the Bonnie books. Did anyone ever read, "A Cup for Janet"? Something again about needing to win the Ky Derby in order to save the farm and marry the right guy. Pretty sappy if I remember correctly, although that didn't stop me from reading it approximately 846 times.
I also loved the biography of Joy Carrier - wasn't it called Riding's a Joy? or something like that? Loved it because the MD Hunt Cup was really close to my home when I was growing up.
I had forgotten about Billy and Blaze - I remember checking them out every week at library time in elementary school, and the librarian dryly pointing out to me that there WERE other books in the library!!
I am also a HATER of the Red Pony - I actually won't teach it to my 6th graders (as a former teacher used to) because it makes them (and me!!) cry!! It poisoned my mind against Steinbeck for years!! I may need therapy!! I wasn't keen on Flicka, either.

And girl has old pony that she has ridden for years. But is growing out of pony. Goes to local horse show, makes friends with girl that has beautiful big mare. For some reason or anthoer, mare ends up going home with girl for the summer. In the fall, mare returns to original owner but somehow girl manages to buy her. Happy ending.
                                          Anyone?
