Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • Great thread!

I'm in the SF Bay Area (Peninsula) and would be happy to get some time in the saddle, now that Mickey is at a sale barn.

I've been doing h/j since I was a kid, but have spent the past year in dressage training, so I could do either (or both). Also, I love to just get out and trail ride. I'm not afraid of riding in the rain, and I know I won't melt...

      Batgirl --

I must have missed it, why is Mickey up for sale? All that effort to get a saddle for him -- have you decided that dressage may be for him, but not for you? Did you buy another?

      • Hi Nancy!

I've had a change in my personal circumstances which allows me to get back into showing, which is what I've always wanted to do. I miss jumping - while I found dressage to be very helpful and beneficial, it isn't my sport, and I'm not interested in continuing with it any longer.

Mickey is fine to jump around at home, and he's done very well with dressage and he's a great trail horse. But he just doesn't like the showring. So he's for sale and is at a sale barn right now. Once he sells, then I'll look to buy again.

And I am in the process of trying to sell my FIVE saddles! One is on trial, one is being consigned at a tackstore, and I'm waiting until he sells to see if the buyer would be interested in any of the others!!!

        • I have a slew of horses in Gainesville FL. I have a trainer, but she can always use a person to go trail riding with, or a ground person for when she is backing one of my youngsters. Several of mine need some mileage, quiet and relaxed.

My broodmares might also like to get out a bit. You never know...

You can see some of my horses below, on the link.

          • well, I'll bite. I have an OTTTB mare, plain bay, totally sound, 16 hands, who had been free leased before (actually through this board) but might have been a little much for the rider. she is sane and a lovely mover. I have a wb son out of her and will probably want to breed her again at some time. she is in avon, new york (upstate from me) and has terrific ground manners, is very aaffectionate, has been trail ridden, jumped, but is not for a beginner....she is just hanging out without a job....

I keep waiting for that "change in personal circumstances" to hit my checkbook too.

Congrats on getting back in the ring. I hope to hit at least one show next year, before my boy ages out of the baby green ring (can a teenage horse do baby green?). He got a late start on this career, and my checkbook took a hit the last few years -- so between us, we haven't done much showing.

Did you buy anything yet (hunter or jumper or eq)?

To keep on topic, we do have a horse at our barn that needs some attention. Sensible, but sound only at the walk, maybe light trotting. He is now owned by the barn owners, as his mom couldn't keep up with his bills.

Spare horse is a green 15.1 arab, who one day will do the show circuit,he would love, love love, some personal care and attention from a quiet rider, dressage oriented, and reasonably experienced,or willing to learn more, out on trail rides.[No beginners]

Can really only do Mon or Tues mornings.

We would trailer out to a local park.10 minutes from my house.

                • I'm looking for a part-boarder for my thoroughbred hunter. I ride him 3x a week (sometimes more if we are preparing for a show). He needs an experienced, confident rider.

He is boarded at a semi-private barn with an indoor arena and sand ring. The barn is north of Toronto in the Newmarket area. If interested, contact me at zappa223@hotmail.com.

                  • I'll play...I have a riderless horse, he wants to do dressage, he hates to jump. I'm not a dressage rider, so therefore....well, ya get the picture. He's 9 years, appendix QH, big solid blood bay, 17.1. He's got a big floaty trot, and a comfy canter. I've raised him since he was a weanling. He needs an experienced rider, though he is a sweetheart on the ground and in his stall...he has a bit of a lazy streak, and still needs to learn "forward". Between work, trying to fly in my spare time, and doing my part of the CLASS circuit (including showing my new horse), I have no time to devote to him. Any takers?

I'ts a quiet barn, I'd be happy to share rides for the sake of having someone else on the property, especially for jump schools! Am open to trailering to beach, longer trails, schooling shows, or cross-country schooling if you have access to truck/trailer... am working on getting a rig soon but don't have one at the moment.

I'll be at home in South Windsor, CT (about 10 minutes east of Hartford). I ride on the IHSA circuit, so I'm definitely accustomed to all types! I'm also a dressage afficionado (though I don't have much of a chance to do dressage-y stuff here at school) and was in Pony Club. I'll ride pretty much everything and anything.

                        • Hi, I am 15 mins west of Winchester, VA. I am an experienced rider, but horseless and hating it. I have references(some on this board) and am somewhat out of shape (somewhat ). I rode Novice eventing, showed 1st level dressage and ran a couple of barns. Just want to smell the smell and hopefully ride the ride! Thanks!
                          P.S. I'm 42 and a responsible sort of gal!

One must think when looking at a horse in motion, that it hears music inside its head.

                          • I'm a horseless rider in DC with a car thursday-monday. I've been riding 10 years, everything from every evil pony in the barn that no one else would to much nicer horses, doing hunters and eq and the like. I'll ride anything, I just want to play. Being in college, I've had less opportunity.

If anybody is interested there are a variety of ways that somebody come out and spend some time with my horse. I have four horses (expecting two foals in the summer).

Currently, my shoulder is out of commision, so if anybody is interested in just brushing or spending quality time with some absolutely wonderful horses (not that I'm prejudiced or anything ), let me know (PT or e-mail- if you e-mail me please put something about chronice board, so I know it isn't spam ).

I am also in the process of getting my three year old stb filly started under saddle. My problem is that I don't feel safe riding alone. Willow is excellent for a green horse, but I feel much safer having somebody around and it really isn't fair to her to ride her once a week in my lesson. Willow doesn't really have behavior issues- occasionally there is a mild buck, but she is still working on her steering (drunk horse syndrome) and requires a lot of leg. I would feel fine with somebody else with some green horse experience getting on her.

I also have two broodmares that are in early pregnancy and they could be ridden lightly. My tb is a pretty easy ride. My QH is very quirky but an awesome ride (would require a little more experienced rider).

And then of course there is Remington, my 6 month old colt. He is very well behaved and gets taken on frequent walks.

Then in late July or early August (if all goes well) there will be two more foals if somebody is interested in getting some baby experience or just loves spending time with them.

I don't have an indoor or outdoor ring. I have a flat field that I ride in. My guys basically do hunter under saddle or training level dressage sort of work. My QH also goes western. The broodmares have also done some trail riding.

I am available most mornings and most Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

I've been dying to add to this thread. I think it's a great idea, but I wanted to make sure fiance was fine with it. The horses are mine, but we co-own our property. My trainer also thinks it is an awesome idea. If I was a horseless person, I would have loved to have had an opportunity to meet somebody that had extra horses.

So, if anybody is interested PT or e-mail me (just put something in the subject line, so I know it's not spam)

MSOP- you and me and about every other squillion x x x x x riders out there! I think I know maybe ONE other rider (who I've actually seen ride) who has even a SOMEWHAT truly independent hand/seat combo out there. It's natural defense.

Also- Fairview HC- I PT'd you- did you see it?
