Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

so the criminal and civil actions against DBSC are moving along, and (no surprise) her story continues to evolve. Fortune is still located at the shipper's farm (we hope), and his *new* story to the police is that he had *no idea* the horse was stolen. As if he didn't load Fortune into his trailer all by his little self. Sigh. Talking to these two yahoos is like trying to nail jello to a tree.

Cool Meadows is doing ok, this stress on top of her cancer and just-over radiation treatments is wearing her out, but she's enjoying her time with her baby. She knows you all are following her nightmare and appreciates the incredible outpouring of support and jingles.

Hopefully this mess will be cleaned up soon by the courts and she'll regain possession of her horse Fortune. And the two dingbats will in the long run get their due. That's called 'karma' and it is very consistent

this is beginning to remind me of the old tv show "Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman"....... *someone* placed a Craigslist ad in the personals section with Cool Meadows' phone number. Local constabulary have not been very helpful, BUT with that said, *someone* is about to be hit with criminal charges unrelated to the theft of Fortune, so perhaps the tides are beginning to change. All reports indicate that Fortune is still ok, Cool Meadows is hanging in there.

Don't know the whole story except what is written "on line" but when this crap happens, it is waaay over the line.

That's unreal. And does not particularly help *someone's* case.

Still jingling for the return of Fortune...rather literally, I suppose.

People just really... suck. We had someone do something like this to one of the board members of the rescue. Except the ad was in farm/garden and read something like: I work for a rescue that kills old horses. I have two old horses at my house the rescue is going to kill soon so I'm giving them away. My address is 123 N. Somewhere Street. Just come get them out of my pasture.

The ad was placed the day before that BOD member was scheduled to be gone all day for a BEHS fundraiser. She had to put padlocks on her gate, had to have someone at her house 24/7. Fortunately no one came to get the free old horses (one wasn't old and the one who was old was HER horse, not the rescue's - we don't kill old horses, btw).

The BOD member called the sheriff's dept. But even though we knew who put the ad up there, they said they could not do anything as they had no way to prove who placed the CL ad.

People just amaze me (in bad ways).

It really is so sad that people can be so malicious emotional and financial vampires. But, the good people keep their head up and their shoulders back and move forward, in spite of all the muck and trash that the wingnuts throw. Cool Meadows is still maintaining her sense of humor and is just stunned at how much support she got from the folks on her FB and on COTH. That will get her through all of this, and to quote *someone* from the closed thread, the truth will prevail. Sometimes it just takes a while. Patience is a virtue, but honestly, sometimes it is an annoying virtue

CM is going to see Fortune in the next couple of days, he's overdue for new shoes. She will have an escort (not the local constabulary, of course) so that all remains above board. I anticipate that Fortune will be back home with CM in the next week or so.

It is hard to believe that someone would do something like that. OMFG. How low and just plain mean.

Someone did that to my brother when he was in high school, about 30 years ago... posted that he was an "attractive young model" to a "men-seeking-men" section of the personals in the local alternative paper, gave his first name and our phone number.

Some very unsuspecting callers got treated to my mom being really, REALLY upset about it. My brother just didn't answer the phone for a while.

Back in the day, all we did was ring doorbells and run, or send in subscriptions to Playboy, etc. with the person's name on it. Boy have things gone downhill......

Fortunately CM flagged the craigslist ad and so it's been taken down, but.....amazing how much time *someone* and her husband are spending to make CM more miserable than they already have by poaching her horse. Hope to have some splashy news and updates on this next week. Fingers crossed!

I don't even know where to start. I've learned a lot of things. I've learned that in Virginia, people with prior CPS convictions can legally take money to watch children if the charge had been bargained down from felony to misdemeanor. I also learned that those charges are confidential to the public and won't show on a background check. I've learned that it's legal to strap a nearly two year old into an unsecured car seat in a shut bedroom for hours during "naptime" because said two year old tends to climb out of the pack n play at daycare. Yes, legal, no, not the seemingly obvious child endangerment. I've learned that trespassing is legal in Virginia if not posted very specifically, or unless you send a certified letter to the person you want to not trespass. I've learned that you can go onto someone's property while they're away at work, or out of town, and steal property, and if you then make a claim to that property, you get to keep it till court.

What else... the document analysis is currently in the works... the CA is apparently hoping to charge me for forgery because the lieutenant keeps talking about it, never mind my bos with witness. The other party apparently signs with two different names but I only ever knew them with the one name. Let's see what else we have... animal control was contacted to ask to check on Fortune and refused, saying that they've had "dozens" of complaints about the party holding him and all have been unfounded. The AC officer added that (verbatim) "some horses look like death on a cracker up there", but they're the ones that the other party claims are "20 or older". I argued that point, since I'm the owner of one fat 30 year old, but my argument was countered with "well an 80 year old grandma doesn't look like she did at 16, does she?" I've been advised to check Fortune myself since the other party has stated to officials that they might own, at most, 30% of my big, hard keeping, lame horse. I'm working on making that happen without getting shot since he's now seriously overdue for the farrier. I've tried to retain several lawyers who've all told me it's not worth my money, and that I don't even need them. What I need is a lawyer who knows horses, and is enthusiastic.

There is a court date set for the craigslist harassment so the police did follow through with that investigation. In the meantime, the other party's other half charged ME with phone harassment when I don't even have that person's phone number. There's a court date for that, too. In between, I have been receiving nasty texts that go after my cancer, and are signed with "I wish you good luck and FORTUNE". You couldn't make this stuff up.

The nastiest kicker is that I have a witness, who I'd never met before, who has been directly told by one of the parties involved that they stole my horse because I "abandoned my son and owed money for childcare." (they never told the witness I was away getting cancer treatment and of course didn't mention the decent sized monthly direct deposits for childcare plus the free board for two horses... they led witness to believe I was out partying). The witness did tell the investigating lieutenant, who read the witness statement to me and it seemed pretty clear cut but he said, "well, I don't know anything about horses." Witness doesn't want to testify in court due to a very legitimate fear of retribution which can be explained by PM. Details of the fear would reveal their identity. You just couldn't make any of this up and every day I feel more and more like I'm living in some twisted alice in wonderland nightmare. The CA has never returned any of my calls. I hear he is a horse person and I'm beginning to wonder who his horse friends must be, because something feels very wrong with all of this. So, so wrong. There's a court date set for Fortune but I'm told by the clerks that it will just be to see if the other party shows up and if they do, an actual trial date will be set. There's even more, but some things have to stay private for now. I'm just tired.
