Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • Well, I am thinking that either the vet did a poor job of aging him OR I wasn't listening. His tattoo is J3770, which indicates he's an older model. Anyone want to see if they can find anything on it?

Nevermind that. I'm filling out the form with the Jockey Club. He has got to be the older model - I was hoping for the J of 2006, because that meant he had years to go on living a good life! So instead we'll make his life as good as we can for however many years we have.

    • Jenn, that can't be, because he'd be 33 years old.

      • There is one bay horse with a star named A little bit for ma in 2006, but not sure about the white markings apart from the star.

        Horse Name Littlebit for Ma
        Tattoo J37700
        Year of Birth 2006
        Dam Name Ma Carter
        Color Dark Bay or Brown
        Sex Horse
Does this match> Small mixed star to left in forehead and connected short narrow mixed stripe, ending in a point slightly to right at eye level; thin mixed stripe becoming on bridge of nose on bottom, becoming a faint line of white hairs above nostrils, widening and becoming bordered flesh colored and ending between nostrils; white hairs on upper lip. Median cowlick at top of eye level.

        • I agree, it's unlikely in the extreme he's 33. Especially not if you can read the tattoo clearly! Littlebit For Ma is a brown colt from Louisiana, and unraced...that puts him in the right general neighborhood. The sire raced in Texas and LA.

          • if that is Bingo, his birthdate is April 13, 2006 in LA, and he is UNRACED

I'm trying to figure out how to save this "free" record from Equineline, may need to print out and scan back into soft copy.

Jenn, will wait to hear from you if the marks match up with the record/physical description that FalseImpression found........

                • Very late to this thread, but that picture is horrific. Glad to see rescuing him was a success. Just sent a small dribble........ I've been meaning to send a little bit for Always Funny too, but keep forgetting. Can someone PM me the PayPal address for that?

Thanks to everyone involved in this one!

                  • The markings on the 2006 horse don't match. I had seen him, too.

The Jockey Club is going to see if they can help. I'm headed out to take a photo of his tattoo and more photos of him from both sides and his head.

I thought that maybe we were wrong on the breed and he's standardbred (really rare down here), but I couldn't find anything matching him with a Standardbred tattoo.

I didn't think he was 33, but horses can live that long.... but he just doesn't SEEM that old (I know that's an unscientific observation!).

                    • Jenn, standardbreds are freeze-branded on their neck on the right side under their mane, so probably not an SB. Doesn't look like one either. I'll reach out to New Vocs and see if they can help solve our mystery.

Thanks for that info - I didn't know about the freeze brand (I had gone and read about tattoos). I thought it was unlikely, because we just don't see many STB here.

He is a mystery. I had my husband look at the tattoo this morning and he read it the same way I did. I have pictures now I am trying to download and I'll send them to the Jockey Club (will send you a copy, too).

Poor many is probably going to get a betadine bath this afternoon. I haven't been messing with him a lot as I just want him to recover. He does, btw, love horse cookies so he's getting several of those whenever I go to the barn! Today after his photo session, I was pulling out little bits of hair and my husband handed me a brush. A lot more hair came out, and then I started peeling 'mats' of hair off of his back. He looks worse now, but that hair had to feel miserable. It was matted with dirt and dead skin. I imagine there's some rain rot going on there, so he's going to get a bath (if he agrees with my plan, anyway!).

Sometime when I'm not sweaty and gross, I'll get DH to take a picture of me hugging/holding his head. He's just too sweet.

                            Oh but -I- would!

Trying to get his webpage together so I can upload the tons of photos I've taken. WHY are there so few hours in the day lately? (Could be because I'm spending too many hours in the barn and not enough hours on the other work...)

                            • I really, really doubt he's 33 (I can't imagine any vet misreading his teeth by THAT much and while horses do live that long, the average TB does not, let alone one allowed to get in THAT condition) and it's more likely the tattoo's being misread.

That, or is it possible he's an Appendix QH? I don't know how their tattoos work but it would not be as odd as a STDB in that area.

                              • I agree with danceronice. Tattoos are so hard to read. It took my BO's husband and me lots of tries to get Callie's real name. And the lady at the JC was wonderful to keep taking my attempts at reading the tattoo.

I was at a barn with a nice old STB, sadly given away to a not so good home, and that nice old gelding, about 17, did not have a neck tattoo. He had a lip tattoo but it was not the same numbering system as the JC tattoos are.

Poor guy! Whether Bingo is young or old, he's had a hard life in the last year or so. I hope he was on the track and we can find out where he came from.

                                • Well he's been in race training at minimum, so we can at least figure out who owned him once even if it was years and years ago, which is a start. And give him his proper name. Tattoos and freeze brands at least them keep their identity. The question is what breed? I only am familiar with the TB tattoos.

And tattoos are hard to read and they can deteriorate quick. Lucky was seven coming eight when I got him and now at ten his tattoo, which was clear when I got him, is very hard to read. My old OTTB was just five when we got him and his tattoo was borderline-impossible to read.

                                  • I looked up the QH tattoos, and they do #s first and then letters.

This tattoo is pretty clear - I hadn't thought of it getting more faded/harder to read with age. So it makes me think he's youngish at least. Now to figure out the mystery... I've sent photos of the tattoo and Bingo to the JC and we'll see what they say. Maybe if they cannot figure out who he is, they'll have suggestions for who else to ask!

I have a stupid question - is there racing in Mexico? Do they have a separate registry? I mean, we're probably 12+ hours from the border, but horses are brought up from Mexico for various reasons..

                                    • You know the old trick about viewing the tattoo in the dark under ultraviolet light, right? I actually was not able to get HRH Avery's until we were at the vet clinic and they *had* a black light.
