Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

  • Its just my opinion. Your sarcasm doesn't go very far with me, not sure what you would expect from me by being irate. Threatening suicide on the internet is not new, but very old (previous poster) and often done for attention. I do feel for you and what you have gone through, especially since I went through similar situations myself and certainly don't think I handled it gracefully or well. I did not, however, put it on a bulletin board looking for petting and co-snuffling, which you did do.

I hope you can pick yourself up and move on with grace and fortitude, and I wish the best for your animals which need to be rehomed, which should be all of them, but you have been cagey about them and it looks to me as though you are looking to rehome the oldsters and keep the younger ones. Maybe I am wrong? I just really hope you're not another chanter looking for online followers of drama and free rides, and I do have a right to say it on this BB in particular. In other words, I do hope I am wrong. However, I do have a right to express my concerns, and I tend to do so when money and BB member support is concerned. I just noticed that there were online BB memebers who weren't getting responses from you. I hope you have corrected that and folks wanting to take your horses are being met and shown the horses, now, because it looked very much like they weren't, earlier.

Good luck. Its a hard place to be in, and scary to see yourself out of it. I'm certain you can do it.

If you know who this is, then you can certainly search her previous posts and KNOW she is not anything like Chanter. Her previous posts have always been sane, and very caring about horses in need, and she has always done her best to try to get the word out about horses needing help.
Your thoughts on the situation are noted. Now, please go find another thread to be nasty on, and leave this one to people that truly are concerned about someone's welfare.

        • We know that the OP has on numerous occasions on coth pointed out ASBs in need on broker lists and other sites.

So when someone tries to help out needy horses, people should try to help her out when she's in need.

We don't know what OP's mental condition is. We do know that it's not good to challenge her authenticity if she is suicidal. Don't push someone over the cliff if she's in danger of falling; pull her back up!

          • Some things that you learn in first grade stay true forever. Two plus two equals four. Always say please and thank you.

If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all.

It's not right to kick somebody when they're down.

            Still true.

Best wishes to Iz and her animals, and many thanks to those who are trying to help her.

            • I hope that OP chooses to live. For herself and for her horses and dogs and for the people who care about her.

I just want to say that having had someone I worked with tell me that he was going to commit suicide, and having had him do just that 6 months later, I personally know that some people will go through with it. Not all are seeking someone to prevent their suicide. It happened with a prosecutor working in DA's office in Atlanta. It was documented in the newspapers. I personally got involved and warned people. Everyone laughed at me. So when Don did shoot himself in front of his little son or his son's birthday, everyone said I was right. I'd have rather been wrong.

This thread is to support OP and try to help her out of her difficulties. And to try to get her to seek psychiatric help.

exactly. and if you choose not to help, that's your prerogative, absolutely.

just please save those of us who are wanting to help from your negative mean spirited comments.

Putting the specific situation/person aside here and talking generally - are you seriously suggesting someone wouldn't?

People have faked terminal illness, they have faked operations (including posting pictures with faked IV's, surgical dressings, etc), they have faked miscarriages and deaths of loved ones, they have faked their own deaths! For attention on the internets.

Threatening suicide is small potatoes compared to that; unlike faking your own death, it even happens irl with some regularity. Ask any psych or primary care provider.

Honestly, believing that the very idea of someone threatening suicide for attention is somehow beyond the pale is very, very naive.

Not speaking to Iz's specific situation, but...um, yep. All the time. There's a reason "GOODBYE CRUEL INTRAWEBS" is practically a meme. And the "now s/he is dead aren't you all sorry" sockpuppets. It is generally best, unless someone (a known non-sockpuppet) can go confirm in the real world that it's true, to maintain a degree of skepticism about internet suicide posts.

And if there IS trouble with people wanting to meet/take the horses, that kinda does need to be addressed, if Iz really needs help so much. (No, I'm not one of the people trying.) Maybe someone physically in the area can facilitate? I'm not remotely close enough but if I were I'd be happy to help with having someone meet the horses, or helping a shipper pick up the placed ones, and I'm SURE I'm not the only one. Even if Iz is really NOT suicidal, and I don't mean posting for sympathy but venting rather than really considering it, desperation is a terrible mental place but it also makes acting on 'final' decisions, like giving up a beloved horse, really hard.

                    • The only horse that I have no listed as looking for a home is lame right now with an abcess. I cannot show him to anyone, in this particular condition, and he is the youngest horse I have (at nine in May). He also has substantial issues that may make rehoming him impossible.

The others all have places to go. The list that CA ASB used was from the ASHA site- and it is not correct, as several of those horses have been rehomed, but not transferred by their new owners.

Several of the horses who are leaving are going sight unseen, as they are going to friends who already knew of the horses. So, no appointment necessary. In addition, as I mentioned awhile ago, two have gone to local riding program, and two others had found homes prior to my original posting.

So, for those who do not think that I am making a concerted effort, or have not, this is the best I can tell you. Someone else might do it differently, or **better**. I am doing what I can, and I am being assisted by Angels from all around, including here on COTH. Thanks to those who have shown such kind support- it is truly appreciated!

My eye rolly muscles are tired because the Iz person (and I have no trouble figuring out who her real name is on COTH) is drahmatically insinuating suicide on a public bulletin board. Ther is no danger of her offing herself, if she was going to do that she would just do it and not discuss it. Here, she gets tons of attention. I am also concerned that people who want to see the horses are not getting response, and those making appointments to see the horses are being cancelled.

Myriad people I know, ibncluding me, have been through Isabelle's situation. Its not pretty, its not easy, but those I know, including me, did not take it to a bulletin board nor threaten suicide and then continue to post "such a little trooper" type posts without adressing the concerns and her own previous threats. emotionally manipulative? Absolutely. Suicidal? Not a chance. I've come across many many women like this before. They hold onto what made them dis-eased because climbing out of the situation will put an end to the attention.

Call it what you will, I call it emotional manipulation. My opinion. Sit back and wait. Guarantee you the horses will not be rehomed.
What exactly did you want to achieve with this post? You've been banned before for failing to check your filter at the door. Didn't you learn anything from that experience?

Maybe I'm naive, but I would rather respond to someone who is in anguish with kindness and empathy, regardless of their motive. Let's face it, anyone who would post at length about their suicidal thoughts is either depressed and suicidal and/or experiencing emotional pain, regardless of their motive.

I've kept myself off of these threads as I have no real way of helping and, perhaps more importantly, am currently rebuilding my life after going through a distressingly similar experience. This rekindles a lot of still smoldering pain in me.

This is too damn gross to ignore.

Your whole post, but the bolded in particular. I posted my suffering on the internets for pets and co-snuffling. I'd be dead right now if I hadn't.

I was out of IRL folks to turn to, or at least felt that I was. Talking was hard; typing was easy. The co-snufflers and petters I reached out to saved my life, plain and simple. They propped me up, replied thoughtfully and intelligently, and gave me a "job" to do- I had to check in, and I did, and it gave me an island in a seemingly infinite sea of misery.

Of course people "fake" it, but it's not hurting a damned thing to assume someone isn't, and you may very well contribute in some small way to saving that life.

OP, I wish I had sage words. I can tell you that two years out from my own life crumbling, I am the happiest I have been in my adult life. It's pretty cool. Some things still rub raw and probably always will, but life as a whole is a darned beautiful, strange, surreal place, and I'm incredibly glad I stuck with it. It's worth it. I wish you the very best in your travels forward. I am sending you all the good juju I have. Lean on it when you need, and keep going forward.
