Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • KPF's Elf-- THANK YOU!!!

You rock!!! Yes, I was home on Xmas eve and the doorbell rang... there was nobody there but the FedEx guy was pulling out of the driveway and the package was on the porch. I just knew it was my SS gift. I opened it Xmas morning and was delighted with all of my gifts!!!

I got a monogrammed saddle pad (navy blue which looks good on my new old guy, he's liver chestnut), a horsey Xmas ornament, horse treats, peeps, socks, a horsey t-shirt, and a cool horsey Xmas wreath. I'm assuming my SS made the wreath, it is cool... and I want to learn how to make those origami horses you put on there!!! It's already proudly displayed on my living room mantel. I hope I didn't forget anything, there was so much in the box, and I'm at the library now because we don't have internet at home (we can only have dialup, anyway, out in the boonies) and I won't be back at work (with real internet access) till Tuesday. I was actually out shopping today and decided I HAD to get online somehow to thank you, so I stopped here on my way back to the farm.

So, who are you? You didn't leave me any clue as to your COTH screen name. Out yourself, elf!!!

Oh, and I saw your post that there are a couple more little goodies coming, I can't wait to see what those are.

Again, thank you so much, I love everything!

Gonna have to try and give the horses some peeps today, my one old gelding won't eat 'em but I'm betting the little pony will, and probably the "new old guy" too. We'll see!

    • My Christmas was the Best!

Twas the day after Christmas, and all through the house
No-one could shut me up about my presents, not even my spouse

As I sat by the tree yesterday morn
I just couldn't believe, so many packages and papers were torn

Why it just seemed like the boxes had no end
Why my goodness, she certainly had to overspend

But my writing here could not possibly express
The magnitude of her gifts, for me, she sure did impress

An incredible tie-dye t-shirt with a bright full sun.
I can't wait for warmer weather to wear this one!

The lightest pink shirt with an embroidered pink horse
Everyone will ask me where I got this one, of course

And a Life is Good eventing shirt too
It is in the prettiest light blue

I am not done yet. A really neat, lightweight Kerrits shirt with a great design
It is the perfect summer weight, goes great with my hair, I sure will look fine

But, there is more...helmet liners, another pair of socks, and incredible treats for Oreo.

My SS has sure made my holiday!
The best part of all is now I have a great new friend!

Thank you for making me holidays incredibly special! You are the Best!!!!!

      • I am worried as I have not heard from my giftee as to whether she has received her gifts yet. Giftee, if you are out there, let me know if you got them.

I hope my secret santa saw my thank you note on this thread. I am not positive who my SS was.

        • Thanks sooo much Vesper Sparrow, Big Bird and Andy!!!

I finally got to open my SS gifts on Christmas morning and they are perfect!!

          What I got,

A couple of beautiful cards for myself and Cinnamon.

A stock tie and pin - both of which will hopefully be put to good use this year as Cinnamon debuts as an eventer.

A very pretty brow band with peals and crystal beads that I can't wait to try on Cinnamon. She will love it!

Cinnamon got a bucket of watermelon flavored molasseses treats which she enthusiastically approves of. She even managed to knock the bucket to the floor and tried scarfing as many of the spilled ones up as she could before I intervened (I am soooo mean)

I am hoping I can go ride Cinnamon tonight. She's been having a very lax Christmas because of the very unusual snow falls we've been getting. I've never seen so much snow here on the west coast and when it snows I can't get out to the barn due to the road conditions . It's supposed to turn to rain tonight and I can't wait (I am such a grinch )

Thanks so much for the wonderful presents and taking the time to be such a fun SS! I may be traveling to your neck of the woods in the near future so I may look you up to meet for lunch (and to pump you for the locations of all of the good tack shops)

          • Well, I got an awesome package from my SS, a lovely saddle clock, cool bell boot keychain, chocolate (YUM!), awesome western coasters and a beautiful Arabian statue. It was really fun to open up the package and now my SS has given me clues to discovering her identity...off to search the forum!

They are like a horsey necklace with bells... they help keep rhythm as they jingle with the horse's movement... They can be very simple or decorative and ornate Rhythm Beads

I haven't heard anything in quite a while, and while I am worried about my package... I'm more worried about my elf falling on misfortune.
Oh no!! You should definitely have it by now. There was a delay getting it mailed, but it was mailed and for sure should have been there before Christmas. I hope it was just a delay (weather maybe??) but please let me know if you don't have it in a couple of days, I think my husband (ahem, elf-helper) got tracking information when he mailed it (he mailed a bunch of stuff at the same time and everyone else got theirs, so let's hope yours will arrive shortly!).

                            • Mendin Fences Rocks!

THANK YOU MENDIN FENCES, a.k.a. Tania (She mentioned her real name above so I'll mention it here)! And Sophie!

I got a BEAUTIFUL painted pony for my house. I was hoping for a house item that I could display and that was somewhat culturally traditional to fit my very ecclectic (that's a positive spin on things) taste in house decor. She gave me a dark Kachina Pony, which is insired by Hopi mythology. It is REALLY BEAUTIFUL and I'm glad I got something horsie to display (despite my freakishly vague description of my interests). I actually don't have any horsie things in my house except ribbons and a couple of pictures. Despite my horsie addiction. Wierd.

My horse also received the all-time funniest Tex-Mex horse treats. Oh. my. god. They are actual taco shells stuffed with sticky grain and topped with "sauce". Individually wrapped. Where did you get these? Being in SE Texas, everyone at the barn is getting a huge kick out of these. I almost don't want to feed them...although I will at some point... .

THANK YOU TONIA!!!!!!! And thank you for the picture of you and Sophie. At some point, I think you should send me a picture of you and Sophie from the front.

I had a blast being your elf. Since we have so much in common, I just picked out some of my favorite things.

I hope y'all had a WONDERFUL Christmas. Congrats on spending 2009 (and many more years) on your own farm with all the critters close by!!

I can not thank you enough. The saddle pad and exercise rug are beautiful. The colors are wonderful. And monogrammed too.I can not tell you how much I love them.
The beasties are thrilled too. (the twizzlers are for me ,,right,,,ok I'll share). China will get the bran mash for New Years. She will love the hot treat that she doesn't have to chew. She might even share with the toothless mule. He is such a sweetie even though he tries to act all ,, well ,muleish :-D
I hope that your SS was as generous with you as you were to me.

                                        • Wild Oaks, thank you!!!

Wild Oaks!!! I got it friday, but was farm sitting and not able to get to my mail until today.

You must have amazing mind reading powers, because I have been wanting one of those mugs sooo bad for so long, but refused to buy one for myself! And the notepad is just icing on the cake.

And I looooooooove the saddle pad! It is so cute. So my style.

Dexter just ate half his treat... he's just a little guy, so I have to ration his treats or I see them again...usually around 3am...

You were an amazing secret santa, and it was sooooo worth the wait. I'm so happy!! Thank you!

And a newborn is certainly a fabulous excuse for a delayed gift. Congratulations!!
