Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • Worth the wait!

Thank you Chai for all the wonderful gifts!

The horses really, really loved the horse nibbles. I'm sure they will love the gel scrubby too (the newer black currys are so hard!). I am happy that I opened my gifts before I fed because those gloves you sent are WARM! And they fit perfectly unlike the oversized gloves I've been wearing. And the tote with my farm name embroidered on it.....I screeched with joy upon opening it. It's great! Thank you for being such a wonderful santa.

      • My Secret Secret Santa

I just opened all my lovely gifts, but alas, my Secret Santa still remains anonymous. There was no card or note enclosed. I hope that she will reveal herself eventually.

In the meantime, this is what I know about her from her gifts:

I know my Secret Santa is a creative and very artistic soul, because she sent me a gorgeous handmade wooden horse head (in grey, to match my grey gelding) with hooks to hang a blanket and a bridle from. She also send me a handwoven bookmark in beautiful earthy colours with a horse charm, to match the Christmas ornament. There is also a homemade horse magnet with a beautiful white horse and a necklace made of blue and green beads (my favourite colours) that matches my glasses perfectly. She also gave me a total of four horsey Christmas ornaments for the tree: two beautiful metal horses, a homemade ball with a horse charm and a rocking horse with a ball. There is also a handmade rope halter that my horses will appreciate in summer, when the nylon ones tend to rub.

My SS also sent me a beautiful blue beaded keychain that looks like a shrimp, a pocket watch with a compass and a heated mug I can plug into the car.

She had a stocking made up for my dog Roxy, with a terrific busy bone that lasted longer than anything that I've ever given her and made her Christmas! Roxy also got a pink Breast Cancer collar that looks fabulous on her and will be the talk of the dog park! And a hilarious stuff toy that is a cross between a pheasant, beaver and parrot!

She also gave me a basket of foot care cream, exfoliator and cotton socks, which is perfect, because I am the poster child for the cracked heels thread...

Not to mention the rhythm beads to sooth the soul of my sometimes witchy TB mare...

My Secret Santa is a savvy animal lover. Above all, she is thoughtful and kind. I feel so lucky to have such a wonderful elf and wish her a Merry Christmas and a wonderful 2009!

Lastly, thanks to ChocoMare for her masterful management of our gift exchange. It really made my Christmas. Merry Christmas, ChocoMare, and happy holidays to all COTHers.

          • WOW! Sakura, just...WOW!

            Sakura,
We didn't open gifts until Christmas evening due to the timing of events.

I was speechless when I opened the box and saw the beautiful watercolor of Ori. You are an absolutely wonderful artist. The mat is perfect and I will be taking the portrait for framing tommorrow. Thank you for your time and using your talent to capture Ori's essence. I know just where it will hang! I have a study and the colors will fit right in. This is something that no one else could have given me in quite the same way. I appreciate the portrait much more than you can know.

My generous Secret Santa also got me a Dover gift card (OH BOY!) and a box of Demerara natural sugar cane sugar cubes for Ori. He will enjoy those.

Merry, Merry Christmas to you and yours...
from your fortunate giftee with kindest regards,
            Hazelnut

              Hi,
It was so much fun being your elf this year I am so glad that you liked the portrait Ori is such a handsome boy and I wanted you to have something original... he was fun to paint, and really turned into one of those paintings I find hard to let go of, lol... I hope you enjoy it for years to come I know you wanted a blingy brow band, but that is such a personal decision, perhaps the Dover card could help when you pick out just the right one!

              Merry Christmas!

Thank you very much for my gifts!!! The cats loved their treats and tried to actually get into the horses treats. I love the mug - comes at a great time as I'm moving and packed all but one mug and then began to regret it. And the wine will be shared with friends once I'm in the new place. I'll have to try out the shoe polishing stuff come spring when it finally thaws and warms up out here! The saddle pad is great along with the groomng stuff. The kitties have to wait until after the move for the bubbles so I know I don't end up with a mess.
Hope you had a very Merry Christmas

For those of you who have yet to receive a package, please....I ask your patient indulgence with your fellow COTHers. This year's weather has been atrocious, with serious delays across the country. This will always lead to delays in package shipping as well.

Also, we all know that "poop" happens regardless of holidays. People get sick, injured, etc. Sometimes that gets in the way of packages being shipped.

I kindly ask that you give your Elf the benefit of the doubt until all doubt is erased.... January 10th is usually the date we look to as the official YOU'RE A GRINCH day. Should that happen, I have a faithful corral of DeGrinchers just waiting with itchy fingers to ride to the rescue and fulfill your wishes.

My parcel went out a little late but mail lady said it should reach desination within 10 days. Thought that would be fast but can't seem to get the tracking number to work so may have to go ask her again!

I was just checking in to make sure everything is alright. I still haven't seen a package yet, and keep running to the mailbox (usually in my PJ's) and then hanging my head and walking home.

I haven't heard anything in quite a while, and while I am worried about my package... I'm more worried about my elf falling on misfortune.

Yes, I was a bad elf and mailed my package late. Now I have my fingers crossed that you were home when Fedex dropped it off (on Wed).

Also, I discovered (way too late) that I had omitted a few small (I'm talking very small) items from the package. They'll be on their way to you at some point next week. Don't get too excited -- I'm talking minor stuff.

A BIG thank you to my secret elf! I got my package from the post office this morning and I was so excited!!!
                                    I got:
                                    - a swinging horse head rack painted to look like my mare
                                    - a horse ornament that looks like her too
                                    - rhythm beads in purple
                                    - really cute dangly earrings with purple stones and little horses on the ends
                                    - comfy fleecy pants

I think my gifts might have been hand crafted by my elf since they appear to be customized to look like Sophie If not, then she has excellent taste.

I am curious to find out who you are!
                                    THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

                                        • This elf is getting very, very worried! I sent out my box to my wonderful Giftee on December 17 with tracking. I (FINALLY) had a chance to look at the tracking this morning and NOTHING. I called the post office and they are saying they don't have a record of the package other than it being checked in! Has anyone ever had this situation turn out OKAY? I spent a lot of money on my giftee and I don't want them to think that they have been grinched because of a stupid post office mistake!
