Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

  • There's just no way to say thank you to everyone for all that you have done. My husband and I will be doing the orientation Sunday for those newcomers to the qbarn. I look forward to meeting tackpud and the students.
There will be plenty to do.
The horses are feeling better-some more than others. One stallion is showing he feels better.
Our Region Director is working with him and has discovered he is a gorgeous fellow under all that muck. They will be getting baths Saturday, hopefully, if the weather holds.
It's going to take a long time to get them completely healthy-mentally and physically.
But they will be in good hands.
Take care-we will be forever grateful.

      • Well boys and girls I haven't posted all day because I was in deep serious thought.

No kidding. And not about talking horses (LOL)

We have a BIG problem. And again, I am very serious about this.

We've banded together and really made a difference here. There were/are twenty horses with brighter futures now.

I have thought and thought and thought all day about this...

Where are we going to go with this?<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

Poor yaya's ponies were ... well, not ignored, but didn't get the same whoop whoop.

I know we can't do this every time there is a rescue situation. It's just not sustainable.

First, Do we need a different thread on this?
Second, As a group yes, we CAN make a difference. Especially when it comes to the court case.

But can we REALLY make a change? A difference? Erin. Would CoTH like to participate? ANd I'm not talking about money here folks. This is not just about money. It's about accountability. It's about Petitioning our local, state and national government.

I don't know where to go with this ...

        • Buckskinapp,
I applied to foster a horse, maybe two!
I hope you got my online application. My sister gave 80 bales of hay and got to go meet the horses wed.
I hope I will hear from you when you get time. I listed vets in the area as my references.
          Bless you.

What an EXCELLENT IDEA!! I think I'm going to do that too. Usually I have a few things extra laying around, but having a donation box already set up will keep supplies on hand when they are needed.

              • OM, I don't know where to go with it either, but you're right, it seems like we could do...something. Maybe push for animal protection laws that actually have teeth? Maybe, in line with the 'periodic auctions' thread, there could be a 'COTH fund for horses in need'. I know alot of people, myself included, gave all we could dig up to these horses because we heard about it first, then didn't have anything left for ya-ya's ponies. a 'fund' could help alleviate that problem.

Well, this was a rather pointless post.

                  It highlights the problem.

C'mon folks. None of us is made of cash. Can we toss some ideas around ... or do we want to start a new thread?

                    • I have to check, I think it is six confirmed now (seven, but one is sending the $$ to the New Orleans ponies). A few more said they were going to send confirmation. The first two were sent out yesterday to 2Dogs and equine laundry (well, actually they were sent to Merry to sign, who will then send them to 2Dogs and equine laundry), and when the batch I ordered from Amazon comes next week, I will send out the others.

                        • OM - I'd start another thread. You have an excellent point. While I think the auction(s) can and will help, what about the horses/orgs/backyard rescuers that need assistance in the meantime? Maybe we need a "let's brainstorm" thread. If we can come up with a gazillion different t-shirt slogans, we can do THIS for sure.

                            • OM - I think you have hit the nail on the head. In my case, I don't have $ to donate, but I'm organizing our students to volunteer one day a month at the rescue organization. I'd love to help out every weekend, but we are swamped with our schedule as it is. I'm hoping that by getting my students involved, they will learn from this and grow up to be caring about animals. If they continue to help these organizations throughout their lives, I will have done something. Maybe one of my kids will grow up to be involved in the legal and/or politcal world and animal rights will be their platform.

But until then, I think that we have all shown how much we care, when a problem is pointed out to us. But we need to be more proactive - help these animals BEFORE they get to this point. Lobby politicians for stronger laws and stronger penalties for those who abuse animals. Be willing to join our voices and be heard. I'm not sure if there are only local and state laws - are there any national laws we can petition for better enforcement? Can we split into groups by state and petition our state governments for stronger punishment against abuse?

Does anyone want to take the responsibility for starting such an effort?

                                • No, no silly Not what YOU are. What I was trying to say is that I myself am trying to figure out what to do in order to help horses/dogs/animals in general before it gets to this point. In my area there are not that many horse issues as far as neglect go. I'm sure there are plenty of helpless dogs/cats/others that would need our help. I'm just wondering what we can do OVERALL to help them. Not just in my area but to actually get the punishments for these crimes more strict.
In hopes to deter people from thinking they can "get away" with such acts.
i dunno...maybe I'm just rambling now, but I'm at a loss, ha ha. I want to help, just not sure how to go about it. That's all I was saying (if it made ANY more sense in this post).

                                      • sometimes the need can be overwhelming, and the options so varied, we get stuck, and unable to do anything. This bb is incredibly motivated and powerful and we can help make a difference.
Even if it is to save just one horse... one horse at a time.
But if everyone starts disagreeing on how to do something, as well intentioned and good as the democratic process is, sometimes it gets hard to just do it.
I would like to propose that we do an auction, like we did for Aiden..
we will need a designated thread, same as with Aiden's auction, but beyond that, we can't expect COTH to do it for us.
I propose that we start an auction thread, decide on THREE groups to get the proceeds. and go.
Give the auction 2 weeks to run, checks get sent to SOMEBODY made out in the name of one of the three charities. I am not a good bookkeeper, so I can't volunteer for that job, but is there anyone else who can?
                                        Let's do it, kids!

                                        • Forgive me but I've not read every page of this thread so if this has been talked about already...sorry.

What about the person who came forward and reported the awful situation to the police ? Is there a reward for them ? Is there a way we can thank that person ?
