Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • Chunky monkey here!

I am almost 5'10 and weigh in at 160.

This is especially hard for me because I really want to exercise ride, but most have looked at my bone structure and think I can only healthily get down to 150, maybe 145. Personally I would like to shoot for 140, 135 but that DANG chinese buffet just keeps callin' to me! Sometimes I am very happy with how I look in the face, but never am I happy when I look in the full-body mirror, and I'd just as soon eat worms as wear a bathing suit in PUBLIC! I NEVER like what I look like on a horse. I get so used to seeing string bean jockeys and exercise riders and I just don't look right. It's VERY frustrating.

I especially love when guys tell me, "You'd be so much prettier if you'd lose weight." And ya know what? If I lose weight and they find me attractive then, that's the LAST guy I'd go with. Jerks!

Here's a pic of me on my wild thang pony. She was being a bi-ATCH that day so we stayed on a lunge line At any rate, I've actually lost weight since that day but still, BLECH!

    • I went through a peroid where I was probably overly concerned about my weight (5 yrs or so). You totally focus everything on what your going to eat and it gets exhausting doing that much planning. I ended up pretty much eating the same thing everyday to be safe... the funny thing is is that people say that carbs make you fat... well carbs were basically all I ever ate because they are generally low in fat. I'm about 5'8 and the least I weighed was about 100 lbs. Looking at pictures now, I looked pretty awful but when you're totally in that frame of mind no can tell you any different. It get to the point where its not about how much you weigh but how low can you go - sorta like a competition with yourself. Now I have absolutely no idea how much I weigh because I know it would probably terrify me.... but yah there are still days where I feel chunky but at least now I can enjoy what I eat and not stick with the same boring menus. And now if I fall off my horse I have a little protective padding!!!

      • Jordan, you look fabulous on your pony.

I'm almost 5'4, and reached a high of almost 160 this year. I've lost about 20lbs since this school year started (aug) but I've only gone from a 12 to an 8; I carry my weight very evenly so I don't change sizes much. I look incredible at 120, but thats still another 20lbs off so I'm not too worried. But even at 120 I'm a 6 (from the Gap)...

        • Jordan, hon, you're adorable, and you are NOT fat. I think you look great.
With my bone structure, and measuring at 5'10, my ideal weight is 160. Heck, I'd be happy with 170!
When you're tall, you naturally carry more weight, Don't obsess over the way you look, please, because you look fine!

          • Ya know what's weird...I'm looking at all these picture of people that are 5'6" to 5'10" and weigh 160-180, and you would NEVER know it!

I am 5'6 and weigh about 160-165, and while I'd like to shed a few pounds, i KNOW i will NEVER be even 120 pounds, I would look disgusting!

I'm glad to see all these post and pictures of riders that have a similar body

            • i was so shocked to hear what people wrote on page 1, really reinforced my feelings of being way fat. I am currently 5'3" and 130 pounds, and fight with body image issues every day. After weighing in at 160+ the beginning of my senior year of high school, i changed my whole diet and exercise program and decided to get in better shape, which hadn't been my first time trying to lose . This time though I lost 35lbs , and as a college freshman i have managed to stay pretty consant, but still compare myself to every other rider here at school. The pressure is on to stay thin but i eat healthy and am constantly riding and working at the barn. Would i be more comfortable with how i look in breeches if i lost 10 more pounds? yes, but i know that i'm at least healthy how I am.

              • For the record I'm 5'6, 22 and everytime I've weight myself it's been min 120-max 130 (I don't weight myself alot and then at that it's mostly for amusment).

I used to have huge weigh issues, I was under 90lbs until I turned 16 (at full height) and I couldn't put the weight on. I was a gross stick and hated it, maybe that's why now with my wonderful weight I'm am happy because I look in the mirror and see a healthy person.

I start to question this when I picked up some new friends and they're max weight was probably 105 and only a few inches short but you know what? I have a butt that guys love and unfortunatly with that butt comes my mom's thighs and of course all my riding muscle. I would love to tone some of my body up but loosing weight is NOT a goal.

I'm an efficeient and effective rider for all my horses (16hh, and two 17hh) and that's what counts.

                • Chickadee, you look great. I think 160 is a lot more "normal" than the general public thinks. ANd if you are tall, 160 is pretty slim.

                    • I'm 5'6" and 3/4" and about 160ish. I only weigh myself once a year at the docs. I'm happy with my weight, although I find that my extra padding in the middle doesn't look too flattering in the clothes that the fashion industry produces right now. I'm one of those women who carries a spare tire rather than saddle bags. I have those days where I feel fat, but in my mind I know that I'm really not. I could stand to be a little more "fit", but that's what spring and summer are for!

My TB is 15.3 with a medium build. I am pretty well proportioned between leg and torso, so I manage not to look big on him. This pic is poor quality (it didn't scan well, and it's the only pic I have on this computer), but I don't think I look unsuitable for Uno.

By the way, I always heard that a horse could comfortably carry (pulling is a different story) 1/3 their body weight. So for a 1000 lb horse, weight doesn't become an issue for qutie a while.

                      • I know people are saying this thread makes them sick.. but actually, it makes me feel pretty good! And I'm not 'skinny' either. I mean after spending days at barns where all the girls are twig-like.. it can be kind of depressing. I'm 16, 5'9", large framed and 145, give or take depending on the day! I got up to 175 when I gave up eating meat, because my vegitarian diet didn't include too many veggies! TONS of carbs and junk food. I'm the healthiest i've been in probably 4 years and very happy. Still, I'm like Jordan, and can't imagine wearing a bathing suit in public *sigh* sometimes I feel pretty chunky, but people keep commenting on how thin I am so I just need to work on self image! I do crunches every day, I'm just starting to run 4 days a week, plus I'm outside working most of the day. I'm not looking to lose more weight but rather build some muscle - if I expect my horse to be fit for events, then I better be too! Right now my diet isn't that great except dinner when it's what my mom puts on the table, but I'm working on that as well. My pony is 14.1 and carts me around with no problem! Granted.. I sometimes look big for him, but we have fun and thats what's important

                          • I would just like to vent a little: why do tall people think they're fat when they weigh 150-180, or whatever? When you have to add 5 lbs for every inch over 5', of COURSE you're going to weigh over 150!! (Sorry, just bugs me to see my tall friends say they're fat when they're 6' and 170 lbs, and look fit, healthy, toned, and gorgeous.)

Jordan - you look FAB, baby. In no way do you even come close to resembling a chunky monkey.

I am 5'10", and weigh about 150 or 160. I have pants from a size 4 to a size 10 (why can't there be a standard size?!). I'm pear-shaped: 34-28-38 (I think). I'm guessing my weight, because I don't have a scale and haven't weighed myself in years. I know I've gained some weight since HS and college, when I played sports all year round, had the metabolism of a crack addict, and walked everywhere I went. Now that I'm 23, the weight is starting to stick easier, and I can't eat whatever I want anymore. I'm more worried about my muscle loss - I've gotten flabbier since I started working 2 years ago - than I am about weight numbers.

If my pants start getting tighter, I cut back on the portion sizes and go for walks if it's nice out. That way, I don't have to buy more clothes and can spend more on horsey stuff

                              Again - I'm 5'4" I weigh about 155. My body fat is 22%.

Here I am on a 15.2 hh appendix quarterhorse, going Novice XC. I may have weighed a bit less then, but I doubt it, I was eating college dorm food at age 28.

I think I fit him just fine, and what's more important, I could control him just fine in a standard snaffle, going XC.

I just found this pic, so I wanted to share here, since this thread is still going strong!

                              • This is a thread that has hit really close to home for me. I am 5'6 and currently weigh 147. But just 7 months ago I was at 180. All through high school and college I fought with my weight, finally losing the battle during the last three years of college. My "final straw" so to say was looking at my college graduation pictures. I barely recognized myself! When I tried to pick up riding again it was like a joke. My entire center of gravity had changed, and I struggled just to sit at the canter.

So I joined Weight Watchers. I've realized that I will have to deal with weight issues my entire life. I was raised to "clean my plate" every night at dinner, where I wasn't allowed to leave the table unless every bite was gone. Even though now I know its ok not to eat everything I put on my plate, I still feel twinges of guilt every time get up from the dinner table without having eaten everything.

What if the Hokey Pokey *IS* what its all about?

                                • Some of the things I have seen written on here are absolutely ridiculous. Now, I realize that bone size has a lot to do with how much weight you can carry and look and feel good, but people stressing out about being 5'10" and 160? Really! First of all (and nobody has mentioned this) as you age, you also attain your "mature shape." I'm 50 years old, 5'6" and 145 pounds. I've never had a weight problem, but I have been flabby in places so I started an exercise program and, although I haven't lost but just a couple of pounds in the month I've been doing it, I have so much more strength and stamina, it's amazing. I'm one of those western riders whose horses actually fit their size - lol. My horse is 15 hands even and she's probably just about the same build as I am, equine style. Sign me, an old horsey gal who just keeps pluggin' (and new beginner racquetball champion - whoo-hoo!)

                                  • As far as weight goes I think every body type is different and what people should focus on is that they are eating healthy....not because of weight but because our bodies need us to take care of them. Counting every calorie isn't good for you but neither is eating every starchy fatty globby substance you see. Splurge every now and then but don't gorge. Most people don't eat as many fruits and veggies as they should. Your body needs them.
Working out should be done to keep your heart healthy......a daily walk, bike ride or horse ride is good to keep your parts moving and healthy. I don't believe in excessive working out.
Riding.......I have seen somewhat big people ride very very lightly and some skinny people flop all over the horse's back. I think how you ride affects the horse more than how much you weight

also the quality of the horse's back should be taken into consideration. Some big horses have sore backs and should only have people on them who ride quietly. Some smaller horses have backs of steel.

                                      • My first time with anorexic riders was in college, 20 odd years go, L walked around the dining room with 2 carrot sticks per dy, the other, a well known rider, would binge and purge. They were both 5'5" tall, and weighed maybe 70 to 80 pounds each. Both died by the age of 22. Be happy with what you are. It's the inside that counts.

I ride all sizes, but around 16hh seems to look best.
The taller they are, the narrower they need to be for me to get a leg on properly.
