Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

Thanks for being a part of the COTH forums!

Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.

Is everyone who is criticizing FP perfect??

Perhaps she is not perfect, but I daresay no one else is either.

I am very very disappointed in this thread.

I think EqTrainer, who has had substantive real life dealings with her is the one I will listen to.

Oh puhleeze - "cast the first stone" my ass. I just don't feel like paying taxes to support FP's truck, trailer, & trip to Europe. Wouldn't mind paying taxes to support her education. But the rest? No thanks.

Where do you FP supporters think the money for student loans comes from? The "Free Spirit" fairy?

Just like PP before her, now it is FP's turn to be judged and sentenced by the court of COTH.

Once again, this should be a lesson for everyone.... DO NOT post your personal info on a BB.
I don't always feel up to arguing with your ignorance

I do not believe she said grant, she said loan. Loan means paid back, with interest even.

Even government student loans are not welfare, they are not free monies.

I am not for using student loans for all kinds of not school related things but from what I understand vehicles are considered acceptable use of student loans because being able to get to and from school constitutes a necessary school expense in some cases.

I do not know the terms of the loan FP took out so I am not going to stand here and say she is using the money incorrectly. I do have one thought, school is over and this is monies she did not end up spending for food/shelter/books/labs/etc, was she supposed to put it in an envelope and send it back to them and say oops, sorry?

If she was taking a trip the summer before her freshman year using student loan money I would feel very differently.

<clapping> I guess some folks just have too much time on their hands. Why everyone feels the need to research past posts and exercise their mad googling skills is beyond me. If you don't have anything nice to say, sit on your fingers. Nobody is being hurt here. The people who know her and have her pets are defending her. That speaks volumes to me.

I was listening to a program on the radio about this very thing (disclaimer it was NPR) and that was exactly what was being proposed. That after X amount of years of paying back the loans - I think at least 10 - then as long as the person was working towards the public good the loans could be forgive. So a doctor, teacher, therapist or any number of professions could qualify. I thought it seemed like a fair program.

You know, that's actually not true if the PM's I've received are to be believed. I actually know one person who PMd me, she's an honest and truthful person, and I have to believe what I've been told is true. You've seen what happened to the one person who spoke out. She's left COTH because of it.

As for not posting personal info on COTH, well she had to or she wouldn't have had all the kind offers of money, tack, supplies, housing and food, would she?

And BTW, many student loans are subsidized by our tax $$. That's why they're called subsidized loans.

agreed. Coth has become a place where you can come and cry and some posters willl help you... but beware, you owe them your life! Sheesh...

Whatever happens to FP and her loans is her business. I am glad she is finally trying to enjoy life a little.

I get having common sense about how much you borrow. But I don't know of anyone in his class who is escaping with debt that equals just one year of tuition. Right now he is in rotations and it costs nearly a thousand bucks a week. All the common sense in the world won't make us wealthy enough to afford this without loans. Glad your DH got off that easy, but higher loans aren't a sign of lack of common sense.
That's exactly what I am saying. In fact I think it was 28K. He graduated in '93. No undergrad debt because he had a partial scholarship and worked summers to pay for the rest. UNC is not as good of a deal now as it was then, because of in-state financial crises since that time but still.... you shouldn't borrow more than you can pay off in a reasonable time with the job you expect to get. He never would have considered going to Duke to become a family physician, for instance. (Not just for the cost of the tuition but other reasons too. lol)

His debt after medical school WAS low, as UNC was a great deal at that time as I have said. I realize that. It's just that 300K blows my mind. Unless you can make a LOT of money when you graduate, or have someone else to pay a mortgage or rent, things are going to be tough. Just my observation.

Laura, you know I like you, and you've been very helpful to me. I am grateful for that.

However, please -- let people who've had bad experiences post, if they want to. It is not helpful to spread rumors -- because how do you know, really know, if the PMs are true or not. You don't. And it isn't your business either. Nor mine.

Yeah, but the cost of everything hasn't gone up 10x either. 2 to 3 times but not 10.

FP can borrow as much money as she wants, as long as she pays it off. But I do feel sorry for her carrying that much debt. It's not practical.

But I'm not doing any criticizing.

My policy is to be kind to everyone and try not to judge. You just don't know what is going on behind closed doors so it is best to just be pleasant and carry on.

This is going too far. Really. Just too far. Last I checked nobody was perfect. While some folks may have been hurt, it's really between those individuals and FP. This has become a witch hunt and it's just ugly. Stop and think about the pile-on that's happening here. People trying to get their revenge? By ruining somebody's life? Really? Let it go or speak directly with FP.

This is no new Internet phenomenon. Salem witch hunt, perhaps?

Why is FP not to be criticized but the poor person who tried to help her is called out and then her son made fun of even though sounds like even FP defenders is admitting she did something wrong (college type stuff?) [edit] That is pretty bad stuff. Forgetting all the rest of it I find that pretty awful. Course FP did not post that so can't put that on her but on her friend.

If they agreed that she qualified for 300k worth of loans. As long as she pays them back as agreed she is doing NOTHING illegal.

As someone stated earlier what is she supposed to do put the leftovers in a little envelope and mail it back ?? Since typically funds are distributed through the school as appropriate and any extra handed over to the student. Unless her funds were specifically hypothecated she has the right to spend them on what she wishes period.
