Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

      • I dunno, that buttery fart thing...well...the mind does go places with that hanging in the back of it. Kind of gives me the shudders.

About the posts, wow, just wow. I think you could prolly still look up the chip in thing if you know how to access it. Last I saw, before they closed it, it was up to $245.

So, they've banned quite a few, huh?? What, now they're preaching to the choir? Wonder what all the bannings are for??

For every well run, transparent rescue up and running, there will be three that operate with a much less open and honest business model.

The organizations that really just want a choir to preach to are the ones like this group in Nevada, or CBER in all it's various incarnations, or A.R.M. or AC4H. To question anything is rude, and to ask for more than just vague platitudes is enough to get you pegged as a troublemaker.

I think there are certain catch phrases that these places use, and for many of us when we hear these catch phrases we immediately harken back to OTHER situations when OTHER organizations used the exact same catch phrases to deflect legitimate questions away from the organization.

Although I don't think CCH was doing right by her horses, and I think something needed to happen to disrupt the downward spiral she was in with the horses, I also don't believe that her horses should be "sold" (for lack of a better word) to some group that may not be able to actually care for the horses any better in the long run. Did CCH sign the horses over to the county? Who has ownership now? Not just custody, but legal ownership?

There is so much that doesn't make sense in this situation. Ownership is awarded to the "rescue", based on their ability to pay, before CCH was found guilty of charges that haven't even been filed yet? Is it possible that the Nevada "rescue" is so inexperienced that they don't understand the difference between legal ownership and custody? I have been involved in some pretty large seizures, and we were NEVER able to adopt out or speuter animals until the court case had been resolved and we were given legal ownership of the animals. We might have had physical custody of them for months and months, but without legal ownership we couldn't do anything permanent or lasting to them or with them.

          • For those of you that don't know this yet, CCH had had 2 previous convictions of neglect. Also seems she has lied about most things. Check out the thread on HGS. Her record is posted there.

              • Never mind. I found it. Okay, I gotta say, I'm disappointed, really I am. The old charges are in my neck of the woods and I never thought to check around here, if anyone remembers. I know she had talked of being in OR, just didn't think if was around here, thought it was closer to Bend for some reason.

I'm still not convinced the rescue is on the up and up or a great place for those horses. Have been doing some more reading on them and I'm on the fence about them. Can't put my finger on it, just doesn't sit right, but that means nothing in the great scheme of things.

In the current climate, seeing how things are going, I am not eager to jump to conclusions.

Especially not when unknown people from someplace bump up threads that had already died....

                  The convictions are one thing.

The rescue looking like week old fish is quiet another.

Might be that CCH wasn't on the up and up.
That does not mean the rescue is either....

Yeah, it did get bumped up by persons unknown (HA!) but I found it and you can't get around it. She has convictions of animal neglect. Twice before. Sheesh...

And still, the NV rescue smells like rotten fish.

(and for some reason I can't type 'rescue' tonight to safe my own hide.)

There are degrees of neglect. Did the animals starve to the degree of near death or did they not get their pillow mints at night.

Did the person fight the charges or just pay up in order to save money?

I don't know. But since it was in my neck of the woods, back in 1995, it would have had to been pretty big/bad for anyone to do anything about it.

Still, from now on, I'm not backing anyone, even if I've met them in person. Learned my lesson.

That would be "rescue" singular. And again, a new rescue taking in 34 horses?

Not giving CCH a free pass at all but how many times have we seen rescues being "rescued"?

This is why I try HARD not to make judgment calls on seizures based on info on the internet. I've seen what people can do to animals, but I also want to believe the best in people. So I'm always conflicted...

But I do know that what we see online often doesn't cover all the facts and information. If you read some of the stuff that's been put out online about some of the seizures I've been involved in, you would believe that John Deere Execs. are the reason one set of horses were neglected (yes, you read that right ), that I go out and seize horses just so I can have more (despite the fact that I have not yet adopted a horse from the rescues I've run), that we seize horses when we can't buy them (again, despite the fact that I've not yet kept a single horse we've seized), etc. I just always figure that we can't/don't have all the facts.

I WILL comment on how rescues should run, how seizures go, how the legal process works. I figure one of my jobs is education.

And even if the seizure was justified in this case, it doesn't mean the rescue is by default a good one. Maybe they are, maybe they aren't. Some of the stuff they themselves are putting out there sure makes it seem like they're not prepared for the task they've taken on...

Thank you. I still have doubts about the rescue in and of itself. That being said, I'm annoyed with myself that when I had little niggles about CCH's story, I soldiered on because I had met her and she seemed nice. Yanno, like when someone tells a story and leaves a bit here or there out but it's all innocently done. You can't tell a story with every piece every time, just takes a lot of time. That's what I wrote it all off on.

So, back to being skeptical, doesn't matter who it is. Learned my lesson.

                                  • According to the rescue that has her horses, she pleaded guilty and is not allowed to own horses again, she possibly got 30 days? Unsure of that, or just hearsay. They have now posted pictures of the horses, during seizure, intake, and after showing progress of body condition and hoof care.

The supposed "old stud" that was down and emaciated, was not old after all, he was only 10 years old...

I agree. I'm so sick of the people wanting to bash rescues that end up taking these neglected horses, and coming up with big conspiracies, about how the rescue just wants the horses that are "so valuable' (yeah...even meat buyers wouldn't want them, and how valuable is a starved unbroke, unhandled horse that has been crippled by no hoof care?). No one wants to believe that someone could have repeatedly starved and neglected their horses. It's always an unfair seizure/greedy rescue.
After looking at those pictures, some of you probably owe the rescue an apology for badmouthing them. Regardless of their social skills regarding communication, or lack of them, them DID step up and take/rehad some severely neglected horses.
