Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

I had a typo in the last post so I don't know if you saw it. Thank you so much. The box arrived safe and secure. I am going to wait until Christmas to open, AND the part for my computer came. I think that you sent me good luck too !!

    • WOW elfie I got cool stuff! I got my second present box yesterday. I took some pics but they haven't uploaded yet. I think everything in it is artisan made- love! I got this amazing metal horse for my wall, painted macaw coasters, a horsie keychain, and a sweet little welcome sign- all wrapped up in the coolest woven grass bags! My Bonnie will try and eat the bags, so they are staying safe in the house with me . Thanks again to my awesome elf!

      • WOW. Many, many thanks to my SS - whoever you are! - for the beautiful Equiglas tree ornaments. How funny that they sat UNDER my tree 'til I couldn't stand it, only to open the box and find out its contents needed to go ON the tree! Beautiful horse head stained glass ornaments, each with a sparkling bow in Christmas colors. By FAR the highest-quality Christmas items I own!!!! Thank you SO much!!!!

        • Uggghh, I'm going crazy waiting for my person to get her package! I really thought it'd be there by now!!

          • To The Max!

            To The Max,

I haven't forgotten about you! This elf has been very busy making holiday preparations and has just recently found time to go to the post office. Your package is on its way and should arrive by the end of the week! I included a card with my COTH username so the suspense will soon be over. Hope you enjoy your goodies and please do let me know when they arrive!

            • Sweet Mutt!

Your package will be mailed on Monday Priority, so should be to California by the end of next week, I'd think. Due to schedule mayhem - it IS a busy time of year at the North Pole, after all - I've had trouble finding time finishing the homemade portion, but it will be done this weekend. There are a few things in the package that were on your list, and there are a few which were branching out a little, and of course, there are munchables. Hope you like your package!

              • I got my package today!! I'm sitting here trying to fight the temptation to open it. I have the feeling that it will be a losing battle!

                • Woot! Glad to hear the big box got to you! And your smaller thing should be to you soon, kinda funny story about that one.

                  Elfie xxx

                  • Yay, I can't wait! I will definitely let you know when it arrives
My CANTER cutie Chip and IHSA shows!

                    • grinanride, my package arrived today!! The poor mailman had to trudge up two flights of stairs in the snow (what little amount we get in far northern CA), then while I was wrestling it into the front door, my dog got out and chased him down the stairs...so it arrived with much fanfare. I'm behaving and waiting until Christmas to open it...it's sitting comfortable under the tree, taunting me! I can't wait to see what's inside...

                      THANK YOU and Merry Christmas!

I'm glad you liked them! I wanted one gift to reach you for sure before Christmas. The others are Haitian made and I figured you would like them, but wasn't sure if I could find someone going to the US in time. We truely did have a Canadian Invasion for Thanksgiving week, who chuckled on hearing about our COTH Thankgiving tradition!

The reindeer assure me that the last part of your gift will arrive to me on Wed. All the rest is wrapped up and ready to go.

One in particular that is wrapped very well in bubble and written on "fragile" has had quite an adventure....It was 40-50 years old to begin with, and had gotten prettied up and fixed for you-then it ran away and hid under a shelf-then my kitten stole part of it. Then while I was fixing that part again Another part ran away under the computer. Finally I got it all fixed again and corralled in bubble wrap- but don't take off the bandages- it is a squirrely little thing! (And you are free to guess what in the world it could be from that description )
Aannndd shifting gears - ShayaAlliard and I were also SS swapees. The mystery gift is a model horse, very much a Paso Fino type, repainted like my pony Hoover right down to his brands! One front leg once broke at the cannon, as well loved models often do, so Model Hoover is wearing polo wraps. (trot paired leg to the one Pepo broke in real life, for those who are wondering). Thank you Shayaalliard!

Otherwise, I got a coffee mug with a Horse comic which is absolutely PERFECT! I broke out laughing when I unwrapped it. With the critters' pen just outside my house this comic is SO TRUE to real life! Well, it's my cat and not the horse usually hanging upside-down off the roof saying good morning. The mug handle broke in shipping, but hey, with a little superglue it will all the better fit the theme, bonus points!

I'm still opening everything else a few at a time. The calendar is cute and useful, the halter looks comfy, the mint juliep mix looks interesting and you did a ton of wrapping on all the other little goodies. Thanks again!!

Your big package is leaving tomorrow morning. But don't be alarmed -- I live about 4.5 hours away, so I have faith it will get there in plenty of time. I will also send you the tracking number, so you'll know when to expect it.

I haven't heard from you in a while, so I hope your last package came through OK! That particular company is based out of the town where I work, and we get plenty of their goods at my company and I adore them! Hope you liked them!

                            • Dearest and most patient KPF,

Your Santa has been shopping today.
Soon some wonderful things will be on their way.
I have just a little local flavor
to add for you to savor.
Your box will be leaving this week.
I hope these were the gifts you seek.

                              • So I'm getting concerned... I sent out my ss package over a week ago to my person (only a few states away) and haven't heard anything. I can't for the life of me find the tracking number, but she should have gotten several days ago... I stalked her blog and she's not out of town... what if it got lost!?! Ahhhhh!

                                • Dearest Elf, the package arrived a while ago. I was good and put it under the tree until last night. I opened a few things like the peanuts, but haven't opened the card or anything wrapped yet. I'm TRYING to be good. I will post again after the big day which we do on the 27th here this year.

                                  • I'm sorry about the mug handle Bad postal reindeer. I did insure it, so I can replace it if you want me to. I hoped you'd like little mini hoover- I painted him myself . The picture frame (if you've opened it) was a work freebie that my boss said to send you, but it isn't perfect-wasn't sure about that either. I had a lot of fun shopping for you, and receiving from you too. I've never done coth secret santa before- will definitely be back for next year.

I have PMed my giftee several times and she has logged on a couple of times since receiving her gift and no word from her. ( I am assuming she received it since it has not been returned to me). I put a lot of effort and thought into my gifts for her and I would like to know if she liked them.

                                      • Oh Dressagetraks! Hope you're ready for a sleigh and some reindeer because your goodies are due to arrive tomorrow!
