Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

We do want to thank the people who voted in the last election. Because of them we can keep our jobs with Santa here at the North Pole. We won't have to go work for wal-mart as we would have had to if that bad guy had won. Now we just have t o worry about our state seceding........again! Our area went blue, so maybe we can stay.
Can we PLEASE keep politics off the Secret Santa thread?

This IS NOT the place for it. And I say that regardless of whether I agree or not with views expressed. If a post came up that I agreed with 5000% and wanted to vote immediately for THAT person for President, I still would think that this thread is a totally inappropriate place for it and that people should not parade out their political views and give speeches here.

This thread is for Secret Santa and to tease each other, something to make us smile, something to perhaps even make us forget about real life, which still has all sorts of difficulties regardless of who is in office and still would have had difficulties had all election results been flip-flopped. Lots of people come to this thread looking for a possible lift or escape on a tough day, enjoying others teasing each other even if no recent word from your own. Today, for instance, I'm packing to head for a family funeral. Others have already mentioned on this thread how much it gave them a lift on a particular tough day just to read a tease. And I know there are people right here on COTH having far more "reality bites" days than me (prayers to you, Tamara). This one thread above all is supposed to be purely upbeat and fun for us.

This is not an appropriate place to air your political views, regardless of what those might be. Please, leave it off this thread.

              • Ooh, I haz an elf!

ShoppingSanta, as far as stuff I need/want, the only other thing I thought of is some new earplugs (or ear bunnies as I call them... ha ha) for my silly horse who sometimes sees/hears dead people. His fuzzy ones are looking a bit the worse for wear lately, and I'd love a pair of these:

                http://www.smartpakequine.com/pomms-...FQjznAod-HQA5Q

And umm... yeah... not a huge fan of those polos! The only other things I seriously *don't* like are things with paint horses (running and hiding from the paint fans ), they're bad juju for me as I had a life altering experience with one. I know, I know, it's discrimination and all that but I can't help it!

I do enjoy getting horse related things from my SS since my real life peeps are failures at shopping for horsey stuff!

                • I think there are a lot of Stelfs... for the reason sunken meadow gave.
I think it is easy to make an alter. Just get a free mail account. Make up a name, Come here, Log out of your regular name. and sign up for a new account using an alter.

                  • But some elves don't find it easy to create an alter or maybe have life get in the way, so please don't knock'em for it! I always try to be a visible elf, but, heck, it took me forever to remember my login the other day! Most stelfs deliver wonderful things and there's something to be said for coming home to find an unexpected present: just might make someone's day/month/year.

                              • If we warmbloods can make a ss elf, anyone can. Just make a new email address, we made up a new one, and then join up on coth with your secret santa name and that email address. of course we did it once with a hotmail address, which our new computer refused to let us access. And which chocomare had warned us about. So when we tried to sign up as "Eleanor's elves," we couldn't access it. So we followed directions and cane back with another email address with yahoo, using our nicknames, and signed onto coth as one elf, since we'd messed up the elves email.

So don't use hotmail unless you know what you are doing around computers. We warmbloods wanted to make sure that Eleanor enjoyed Christmas this year. And now she's not feeling well! We hope the teas and bennies that we sent her did not make her sick!
We didn't send the garter snake we found right outside our pasture.

So as long as the elves are shopping and mailing, stealth will be ok. But try to sign on and tease and rhyme. It's fun. Make up new email address, say at yahoo, then come to coth and sign with elf name. Then go to email address and follow coth's directions and you're on as an elf. We never check our emails, just our PMs. And those notifications. Some meanies there, particularly on other threads.

Just make sure you don't grinch. We're only here because last year someone told us what had been happening to Eleanor! We were shocked. Grinches are meanies. We sure wouldn't want to find a lump of coal in our stockings. Well, we hang stockings, but we cannot have anything in them because one of us is very demanding and would tear his stall down to get to his treats. So we hang them, but we get our treats out of a feed room. Just because we aren't patient.

Maybe, if you still cannot sign up with our somewhat confusing instructions, you could get some other elf to let your person know that you are shopping? Not Chocosanta, since she's probably exhausted from all the work. But maybe someone could help you contact your person to let her know that you are there.

                                  • A little tip for those using Chrome with the "remember me" feature: When you (or at least when I do) go to COTH, my sign in name is always in the box for the password. Just click on the username box, and it will appear there - otherwise you can just type it in. The password that will be in the box, is normally the password of the last user you were, so here's a tip: keep the password of your Elf username and your normal COTH user name the same. Super easy!

Another tip for those with iPhones or iPads: if you don't want to set up a whole new email account, just use your iCloud email address. Mine is set to where I can check iCloud and Gmail all at the same time. Again, super easy! (Windows phones have a live.com email that you can also use)

                                      1. What sizes do your horse and pony wear?
                                      2. What are Chip and Moo's show names, if they have them?
                                      3. Are you more interested in getting horsey gifts or "normal people" gifts as I like to call them?
                                      4. Your favorite color(s)?
                                      Yay! Hi Elf!
1.Chip wears a 78 in blankets, regular horse sized stuff for everything else. Moo is a 64 in blankets, cob sized head, probably pony for everything else.
                                      2. Chip is Casino Royale, Moo is Hometown Honeymoon
                                      3. Either/or is fine with me! I like both!
                                      4. Favorite colors for the horses are navy, hunter, or burgundy. Favorite colors for me would probably also be navy, I also like purple.

My CANTER cutie Chip and IHSA shows!

                                          More color options
                                          would be nice.

                                          Oh please, oh Please
                                          Let me know,
                                          if you have a hotplate
                                          or a kettle that blows.

Are you going home for the winter
                                          or staying up at school,
                                          I found some yummy things
that will make your mouth feel cool.
