Forum rules and no-advertising policy
As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.
Board Rules
1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.
This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.
Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.
Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.
2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.
3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.
4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.
Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.
Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.
Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:
Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.
Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.
Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.
Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.
Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.
Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.
Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.
5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.
6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.
If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.
Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.
7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.
8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Awe, thanks you guys!
I expected to be able to post an update as far as his joint fluid test results, but nothing yet.
My vet is taking some time off this week and next, so I'm sure she's been crazy tying up loose ends before she leaves. But she was sure to set aside time for his second joint flush Wednesday before she left.
He's still doing well, although he's a bit distracted because his babysitter, Barbie the pony, is in heat. The little hussy has been teasing him all day.
She's turned out in my sand ring right next to his little turn out. When I was done riding Jack this afternoon, I let him out with her so he could have a roll. Instead, he and Abe decided to play mustang and rear menacingly at eachother over the fence!
The pony was quite pleased with herself to have two gorgeous hunks fighting over her!
Thank goodness he didn't whack his knee on anything while this foolishness was going on. *phew*
I'll let you all know as soon as I hear back from the vet. Thanks again for all your kind words.
I would like to think I will die an heroic death...
But it's more likely I'll trip over my dog and choke on a spoonful of frosting.

Hi Bugs! Thanks for asking!
Abe's doing great! Except I still haven't heard back from the vet on his cultures.
She's scheduled to come out tomorrow afternoon to flush the knee again so I would hope she'd have some news for me by then.
He's still walking kinda gimpy on the knee, mostly when he's turning around in his stall, but there's not as much heat and the swelling really appears to have gone down. YAY!
Besides that, we're doing really well. He LOVES head hugs and baby carrots, so he's getting loads of each!
Hopefully I can post tomorrow with more concrete news on how that knee is doing.

Okay, the vet left about an hour ago and I've had time to collect my thoughts while cleaning stalls.
This time, we weren't able to flush the joint AT ALL.
Abe wouldn't stand still for it and I'm so concerned that we've done more damage than good at this point. I really don't blame the vet, it's just that the fluid that did come out when she got one of the needles in was VERY bloody. She feels it's because of the flushing procedure and the poking and prodding that goes along with it, but I'm really questioning our protocol right now.
And the worst part is, the bills have already added up to over $1,000!
And that's just three visits! After our struggles, she suggested maybe sending him to a clinic where they could put him in stocks and flush the joint that way. And that's when I asked her, wouldn't I just end up spending as much money as I would have if I had just had the surgery to begin with? And she said, yeah, probably.
AARRRGGGHHHH!!!! I know vets don't have crystal balls, but she knows one hell of a lot more about situations like these than I do. Why couldn't she have brought this up a week ago when I told her $1500 to $3000 for surgery was too much and what else could we do to help heal his knee. I feel SO STUPID!
So now I'm at the end of a hallway and the door is locked. If I continue with the joint flushes, we may not be successful, but it will still cost me mucho dinero. But I can't just do nothing.
So I asked her to send the films to Rochester Vet Clinic in New Hampshire. She said they would call me to let me know what they think his prognosis would be with the surgery.
Hubby's pissed at the vet. He feels she misled me, not intentionally, but as he put it, doctors who are found guilty of malpractice usually aren't doing the wrong thing intentionally. I think she was doing what she thought was best.
I'd love to hear from others who have been through something similar, or from anyone who has an opinion on this situation.
Thanks guys!

Oh geez, I didn't even mention the fun we had with the cultures.
While she was here the vet called the lab to find out what was taking so long and they told her that they hadn't received the proper forms so the cultures weren't done. Brilliant!
She told me that if they weren't able to use the sample she had already sent she'd send one again at no charge to me.

I'm so sorry things are not going well.

Is there some reason she can't sedate him and flush it? I know it;s not a great option but instead of shipping him somewhere and so forth- if she really thinks the flushing WOULD work if she could do it- why hasnt she sedated him? Oh, she's been sedating him. The problem is she's been giving him so much she's afraid he's going to fall over if she gives him any more.
And this is even with a local.
I just think the knee is so sore that he's just not going to tolerate it right now.
BUT, he's still moving around fine with only slight lameness at the walk and is eating and pooping just like a normal happy horse. *thank goodness*.

My suggestion would be to take Abe to a clinic. The barn vets do the best they can with the equipment that they have when on the road, but it is not as good as what you will get at a clinic. I had a similiar situation with a horse last year. We thought he had allergies...we had tests done...we then treated him for something else...THEN we went to the clinic. My vet bill before the clinic was nearing $1000...the clinic was not cheap, but we were able to get a def. diagnosis while we were there. The horse ended up needing surgery to remove a mass that had filled his sinus cavity and was growing into his nasal passage...our choice was surgery or to put him down. We had the surgery done at Cornell...and it was not as expensive as I had thought. I only wish we had done the clinic route sooner...we could have saved the poor guy a lot of discomfort...my regular vet was also trying to help me not spend too much money....it was a great thought and very kind...but in the end it backfired.
My other suggestion is to get the lowest insurance on the horses you can when you buy them...even if you only insure them enough to be able to get major medical....this option is wayyyyy cheaper then paying for the vet costs yourself. My horse was insured as far as I knew...but the insurance company told me no he wasnt when I called to tell them what was going on...they had my money (for months) yet when I called they said I had not filled out all of the paperwork they needed....
Anyway, my two cents is a vote for the clinic...and you might be able to find one to give you a decreased rate if you let them know the situation.
Good luck
