Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

      • I just found this gem of a thread! And I've never been so glad to not be a horse owner. As many times growing up as I wished I could be the girl who took riding lessons and got her own pony... I'm happy to have never known the horse snobbery and stupidity I am reading. Parent A is a real piece of work. Please, please, never speak to her again.

When I get my first horse someday, I'd like to board at a rickety barn (or heck, pasture) with friendly adults that do whatever they like with their own horses, leave me and mine alone, and like to have fun.

Hey Frog, it has nothing to do with $$$. The self care barn near me has fights over turnout and who uses whose hose and manure fork!
Barns with too many rules and barns with no rules (better to have lots of rules than anarachy, btw. )

I've always boarded at full care barns and seen the BOs be worse than the boarders.
However, I found a good one and am at it now altho it is far out of town.

As you well know from your name, you have to kiss a lot of toads before you find your prince. Same theory applies to barns and barn owners.

Back from 1st day at show... Parent B did make his kid do cross rails anyways... pony ran away from her once cantering and at times trotted so fast she couldn't post but kid handled it well.

Evidently crooked ex-trainer (the asshat that tried to sell my horse out from under me) evidently called Parent A at the show and said she is going to be there tomorrow... As if I wasn't nervous enough now I have to worry about her being there. I was afraid of this anyway so I have put a lock on my horse's stall because it is secluded enough at night that he could "vanish" easily. So now I am doubly nervous about tomorrow. Now to try to get some sleep...

Bolt cutters are cheap and will make short work of a lock. I'd be sleeping in my horse's stall.

Yepyepyep, get a cot (or one of those fabulous air beds - they are so comfy you'll think you're at the Ritz!!) & park in front of stall. If the show is big enough to have night security, be sure & alert them to the possibility of shenanigans w/ your horse.

Best of luck to you, yours, and Harry the Superhorse!! Just stay away from ALL these people and keep your focus on Harry! Chin up & kick ON!!!!

                  • Horse-loverz-I was afraid this would rear it's ugly head-apparently Parent A is very vengeful, so if she leaves when Parent B does (probably in a huff over everyone knowing and no one telling her) it will be good riddance. And everyone's right-there are nice affordable cots available and you can keep it for future use too-and sleeping with a baseball bat and an air horn cannister (the kind they use at football games) is a smart move too. Actually if the former trainer came near me for a confrontation I would grab the air horn and blast it until people come to help you.
Since Parent A is so cozy with ex-trainer I wouldn't put up with her for one second, she's shown her true colors throughout the incident and she seems to think that putting up with her whining is agreeing with her. Actually you should really keep your eye on A-she sounds like the vindictive type when she doesn't get her own way and that day's coming soon.

                    • I would alert the show management to the situation between you and ex-trainer, and do it now. Nothing alarms a show manager more than having police (yes, alert them, too! ) show up at their venue without warning. And, if taking her home for the night isn't an option, I agree with sleeping outside the stall. This "trainer" has already proven that she'll go to any lengths to get her own way.

I had to repossess a horse from a "trainer" several years ago, at a show. I went to show management, showed them all my paperwork as owner ("trainer" was claiming horse was hers ), and asked for a chain to secure horse until I could get her home. Management was stunned, but very pleased I'd alerted them that the county sheriff might be making an appearance if "trainer" gave me any guff. It very nearly did come to that, too. And I'm sure that, if given an opportunity, the "trainer" would have made my horse disappear before I take her back.

Well I am uploading pics for today but it was great!!!

Ex trainer was there but she rode sooooo badly... I was sitting next to the photographer and she heard me make some snarky comment to one of the other parents and she said THAT girl is a TRAINER???? I thought she was a beginner rider I was feeling sorry for her because she didn't have a trainer to help her out. THAT made my day.

My classes went well this was only my 3rd show ever and I got a 4th and 3rd over fences and a 4th on the flat... and ex trainer did get to see me pin...

Funny thing is though that ex-trainer was in the empty ring chatting with BOTH parent A and B while the wee child rode the pony around things that make you go hmmmmmmmmmmmmm If I didn't trust either of them before I certainly don't now.

The funny thing was I was teasing the photographer that I was going to make sure I knew which fences she was taking pics at and was going to make sure I smiled at at least one of those fences.... and I succeeded.. DD actually caught the shot too. My horse doesn't look perfect (he doesn't have to put forth much effort for a 2' jump) but I think the look on my face is hysterical (ignore the legs please ). What do you think???

Pony did ok today.... but again I don't know what is now brewing between Parent A, B and crooked ex-trainer but if she's involved at all it can't be good.

                            • Love your pictures. The smiling one is great - if you were having half as much fun as it looks like you were than it was a very good day.

How nice for you that evil ex-trainer was not having a good dayand got to see you pin. A bit of karma there. Snarky photographer made me giggle.

Pony situation just gets curiouser and curiouser now that evil ex-trainer is involved with both parents. Sure will be interesting to see how this all plays out. Better make sure your boy is safe in his stall when pony loads up to move - ex-trainer couldn't be THAT evil, could she?!

                                • I kind of suspected she was. I remember your first thread about the whole situation.

Is there someone on site at the new barn all the time, just in case she tries to pull something? Presuming, of course, that pony is going there and that she would have a reason to bring trailer onto property. Hopefully, pony is going elsewhere and the point is moot. But I guess it wouldn't hurt to be prepared since this woman was so determined to get her hands on your horse.

Yup someone is there at all times... horse is microchipped and her interest in him is well documented with my atty, the police, his insurance carrier etc. so hopefully she may be evil but not completely stupid and soon trainer is moving barns so we will be moving to a barn where trainer herself will live and can see the stalls from her window since her apt will be in the barn... can't wait for that to happen.

Parent A & B deserve each other. Especially after finding out more about A's past history with you. Kharma is a B#^%.

I am surprised though that your trainer is allowing the parents to run the show. I would think (jumping alone, tack changes, deciding the program) would have her booting them out yesterday. What a liability.

Sounds like A, B & ex-trainer all deserve each other. Hopfully they are making plans to join forces & leave the rest of you alone.
