Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

Thanks for being a part of the COTH forums!

I don't know if that's offered (the god-like status and powers) by Parelli, though.
    I believe God-like status is a level 4.....

Not defending Parelli. The language is common in many employement contracts.

You'd still defend them if they dropped a load of manure in your hallway and charged you to clean it up yourself...

Wrong... example, I don't agree the fact that Pat excepted and award from HSUS. They seem to endorse HSUS.

Is ok, aside from this Pepperoni business, you are a decent guy...

I may or may not be. Most of us here are names on a computer screen. Judgements made by someones posts may not show ones true feelings and character. I have been called evil by some because I don't oppose slaughter.

      You just can't argue religion...

This isn't religion. And what people are willing to defend or make attacks on based on religion are absurd.

      • Sure it's not a full-on religion but it sure bears some damn striking similarities to it.

From the rule about not "teaching outside the curriculum" to this little dandy of a disclaimer; "Any variation from these can result in safety compromises, which could result in serious injury or even death." it sure as hell sounds like "Follow our lord and savior for eternal salvation or you could die and burn in hell" to me.

        Okay, all joking aside.

I've never, NEVER in all my years and all the trainers I've known seen any so blatantly ARROGANT as to suggest that

        1) Their way is THE be-all end-all to training a horse
        2) Deviating from THEIR methods can result in injury or death

and to top it off I've NEVER had ANYONE I've ever worked with in any sort of professional capacity suggest that they should be able to micro-manage my own personal life on such a level that this P-U crap does. Morality clauses in employment contracts are one thing, some of the junk stated in this "educational program" is just absurd.

        • Just like a cult, they prey on the vulnerable, exploit them financially and segregate from the rest of the world through fear, using claims of exclusivity.

I was involved in a cult as a young teen. The mindset of the followers is identical - there is no other Way and if I behave and pay my dues (spiritually, financially and physically), I will achieve Enlightenment.

One persons cult is another persons religion.

For some, what someone is obcessed with might be concidered a cult. Maybe COTH is a CULT or how about Dressage? Could HSUS be a cult? Lets not forget the RARAs and the anti-slaughter crowd, cultish behavior.

It sounds a bit like Scientology SEA ORG. They even practice "disconnection" - don't associate with nonbelievers or we will take your rating away. So creepy.
Basically just giving money to Pat for a useless "degree" - oh, but you get the experience of washing dishes and lugging rocks.

Although I do wonder if the money train is running a bit slow. Maybe the idea is to find a few rich suckers instead of relying on all the poorer folks who might not be spending money right now.

This is what I have been thinking. I noticed Pep was in Western Horseman recently and trying to hang with the big boys. Would love to be a fly on the wall when he's not around, to hear what the big boys really are saying about him. Who knows, they may see a good thing and want in on the gravy train. In the yesteryear days, I'm pretty sure he'd be sloughed off, but, in this economy, maybe everyone needs to pull together for their piece of the pie.

Just like, I read in the App Journal. I skimmed it so look it up for yourself, but I think the breeds might be pulling together for shows and whatnot, trying to keep themselves afloat till times get better. Then, I if times get better, I'm guessing they'll split back up. Who knows??

An annual star rating review is carried out at the time of re-licensing. Professional status may be REVOKED or a STAR RATING CHANGED, for patterns of:
                          • Continued pattern of teaching long-term students not enrolled in the Parelli program (member)
                          • Not keeping your horsemanship improving
                          • Not displaying Parelli promotion banner
                          • Not adhering to guidelines
                          • Not attending required instructor courses
                          • Misuse of drugs/alcohol
                          • Inappropriate sexual behavior
                          • Unlawful behavior
                          • Recurring negative reports from customers

                          • Teaching more than authorized
                          • Teaching outside the approved curriculum
                          • Allowing stallions in any class
                          • Poor credit with Parelli Central

                          • Poor peer relations
                          • Poor office/business relations with Parelli Natural Horsemanship, or its sponsors
                          • Poor communication/lack of contact with Parelli through professionals@parelli.com
                          • Using products, equipment, techniques, etc. not approved by Parelli Natural Horsemanship
                          • Unprofessional behavior
                          • Behavior counter to corporate objectives
Attention: It is critical to understand the importance of adhering to the guidelines as stated. Any variation from these can result in safety compromises, which could result in serious injury or even death. If you teach outside your guidelines, you could be viewed as a higher risk of liability in a court of law.

social media guidelines, which sound like WWJD.
                          Social Media
Every instructor is strongly encouraged to be an active participant in the social media platforms. This includes Twitter, Facebook, blogs, and Parelli Connect. Posts should be “professional” – the filter being “would I want the office (or Pat and Linda) to see this?” This does not mean that you cannot relate personal frustrations on your journey, but that you act as a professional when and how you relate them.
I've seen guidelines exactly like these for instructor/owners of chain martial arts studios. Chapter and verse, to the point where they could have lifted this right off of United Studios' website. Most of the MA instructors blow 90% of it off, and their places are legally franchised. How are they going to determine your sexual behavior is "inappropriate?" They going to WATCH? He's trying to insure a certain code of conduct for people representing "his" schtick here, but good luck with that ol' boy. My MA instructor was a tequila-swilling, womanizing megalomaniac and he didn't get kicked out!

                            • 7, give it up.

I have another online friend, sharp as a tack, picks faulty arguments apart in a New York Minute.
But argue religion and all of that goes out the window.

I do see the same pattern with you. You seem to have a good head on your shoulder, but the PP topic comes up and you try to dismiss any argument. All around. Your usual deductive skills vanish.

Yep PP took the HSUS award. The man is about $$, you see that yourself. But when somebody else points it out, you get....well....defensive.

                              it's ok, we love predictability.
We know that as soon as PP is mentioned in a thread, you show up.
Quicker even when it's in the title.

                              Carry on.

(now mind you, I don't hardly read your PP responses anymore. They are predictable, too)

But wait! It's Parelli engineered, tested and improved to be better than yachting rope! What a steal at twenty bucks!

Testimonials: "I can't believe how often I have been thankful to be carrying my savvy string. Whether it is to catch a loose horse or tie up a bucket, I have found the savvy string to be a very useful tool."

Mine regularly gets used as a dog lead, tying things up, to help hold a gate whilst on a big horse, and the ultimate emergency fence repair tool! Makes a good halter if you forget yours to!"

Actually those that would go to the course, would have more then two or three Savvy Stings in many colors. They have probably been using Parelli techniques for years.

Their plan is to become Parelli Professionals.

Defensive no. Disagree with that he did. I know why he did it. All clinicians are in it for the money.

I would love to see any clinician tell someone that came to them with a horse, to stop what they are doing and sell that no good horse to the meat man. There are some people that shouldn't own horses, some don't and some horses that are only good for the meat man.

When the owner of the yellow horse said she was going to have the horse put down, he supported her.

He didn't soak her for a savvy string much less a packet of DVDs.
