Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

  • dcm, no news is good news as far as my SO's son. I'm sure he's more than busy. His dad just got back from the airfield where he was seeing more Reservists off. He said they were very upbeat and looked great. I do get to go to the manifest area this trip. I'm nervous, but excited, honored and pleased to be a part of it.

    • This thread is "President Bush Issues 48 Hr. Ultimatum....Please Pray For Our Soldiers." Which I have done, every night. If you do a search, you'll see that a few months ago I started a thread about supporting our troops on the eve of war. So whether or not I was for the war didn't matter, because if praying was the point of the thread - which you'd think it was by 50% of the title of it - then that's exactly what was going on in my house. And still is.

My assitant got married because her husband-to-be was about to be shipped off. He is now in Iraq. Do I pray for him every day? You bet. Do I wish he and the others hadn't gone in the first place? You bet.

      • That's the whole point, we all have a different view of what is education, and we don't agree on what's excellent healthcare. We are as a world each entitled to our own priority.

If you all keep up you'll be blaming the Americans for why the Egyptians robbed the graves of the Pharohs. The simple fact is that if you are hungry and you have nothing, anything you can latch on to to sell at the market has to be something that someone with money will buy.

We did not make Iraq poor, Saddam Hussein stole their money and gave it to those who tortured and abused the other Iraqi. Saddem did not love the Iraqi he loathed them because they were not as wonderful as he imagined.

To put Iraq back in business to support all the citizens, care for them and make sure they have food and homes which is more important the Museum or the Oil Ministry? If you were starving would you prefer the Oil Ministry and the oil pipes which can support the country and rebuild it were destroyed but the Museum was in tact?

        Where are your priorities?

If this shit had started when my son was entering public school, I would have been more forceful in finding a different situation for him, and eventually my daughter - or moved out of State!

              • dcm, a 'positive' US government accomplishment from 1998 (5 years ago) and it's pertinent to the topic at hand: The Clinton Administration successfully repealed the 'Dornan Amendment' which would have mandated the immediate discharge of all military personnel who tested HIV+.

This is a compassionate, positive government accomplishment. I'm still thinking -- perhaps I can come up with one for the Bush Administration.

                  • Duffy, that sounds DREADFUL. Even Fairfax CO didn't go that far, and we were QUITE cocky about our academic reputation.

My mum swears if she had it to do all over again, she never would've taken me out of private schools. One Latin teacher I had in HS - he transferred from Trinity, a private boys prep school in NYC - swore that the public education system would't be fixed until something happened & we had to quote "crawl out of the darkness & start out from scratch". I prefer to be a little more optimistic.

                    • Talking about Governments and choices, I am surprised that no one is screaming in New York. Mayor Bloomberg hired 24 or more cigarette cops to make sure that no citizens light up. But, he cuts hospitals, closes Fire Houses, fires policemen.

What a way to balance the budget, and we've had our first death of an enforcer. Where are the shreeks of horror that someone got killed by someone who wanted to smoke a cigarette? How come the government is not being blasted for stupidity in New York?

We're really selective with our animousity aren't we?

                      • On Saturday week I am lunching with BBer Canyonoak. However, we could do it after Del Mar. I would take off to come see The Princess in action, but alas my media job has me too busy right now. The Fat Red Horse will be brokenhearted to hear, so you must take pictures for him.

But dine with a warmonger? You betcha! Party on, girl, love ya too much to let something like a differing viewpoint matter!

                        • I'm quite the optimist too, Albion. Don't schools reach a point where they become permanently accredited after so many years of "passing"? (If not, they need to be.) That will be the time when hopefully teachers will be allowed and even encouraged to teach again. Of course, that won't help MY kids...It will happen too late for them, I'm afraid. All I can do is try to educate them through outside school experiences and allow them to know that I think some of what they're forced to learn is bullshit and they really won't need to know it later in life and that I won't kill them if they don't pass a test on worthless material...my bad...

                          • Duffy, when we finally manage to be in the same place at the same time to dine, we will probably be arrested for dancing on the bar! And I truly hope one of our Happy Bar Dances will be for the General Duffster's wonderful son coming home unscathed. Because I have told you before, the prayers are there every night, but the assistant's hub and Gen Duffster's son always get an extra one.

I just watched Bush's address...and I feel completely numb. I am thinking about all my friends who are already over there and my boyfriend who is at Ft. Please, everyone...I know the calls for jingles and prayers can get to be a lot sometimes, but if you can, please keep our soliders overseas in your thoughts. Thanks.

And somewhere several pages into the thread LeapOfFaith came back and said she did not mean this to be a thread debating the war, but to offer our support to the troops. She did say that she would not ask it to be closed despite the arguments because she thought it needed to be debated.

I do not think she meant it to turn into the "how evil is America today" thread that it has become. Debate is good, debate is healthy, and I have learned quite a bit from those who I do not side with on this issue. It is too bad that the 'other side' cannot seem to be more positive than their posts indicate.

I would like to see some of the negativity offset with some positive thoughts about the US. That is all. No ulterior profit motive. No ulterior oil related motive.

I am glad to know you pray for our soldiers. I never doubted that.

That there is separation of church and state. That taxes here, compared to a lot of places, are really not that bad (I am allowed to say this, in Britain I paid 40% before including stuff like National Insurance). Double jeopardy. That anyone can get up and sing the National Anthem at a baseball game, no matter how bad they are at it, and people will still sing along. That donor card awareness is assited by the government.

                                    • I pray every night for our troops, for the people of Iraq, the Middle East, the world. I think this war is like walking a path on the edge of a knife, but a path we had to tread on sooner or later. That doesn't mean I am glad of it and that I am not scared for my family and the world.

I know our country isn't perfect but I believe it is good. And I really do look forward to hearing other peoples' opinions (expressed without fear) because it does make me re-think my beliefs.
