Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

I'll bite, but before I do, are you talking about internationally or just here at home?

        • Duffy, I do think it depends on which countries you're speaking of re the healthcare systems. Impoverished nations, yes. Western Europe, almost never. When I lived in Britain, I thought their socialized system left a lot to be desired, but you still good care.

When my grandmother was diagnosed with liver cancer, she chose to spend her remaining days at home. This was in Holland. Her medication was delivered. The doctor came once a day in the beginning, two and three times towards the end. Nurse came a few times a day as well. Because there was only one caretaker, my mom, someone from the healthcare system called her every day to see if she needed groceries delivered. They even had provisions for someone to come to your house if the caretaker needed to get out and run errands or whatever.

I'll play, since I'm not anti-Bush I will play the devils advocate and say something "negative" about him. He is not elegant when giving speeches.

            • dcm, I do not only "claim" to love the US, I do love the US. But since this thread was about the war, and many of us are against us, then our responses regarding war are generally going to be of the negative variety. It certainly doesn't mean we love our country any less, but the thread wasn't the Say Nice Things About America thread, it was one about war. If you had threads about politics and religion, I am sure the debate would be as hotly contested as this one has been.

By "we" I mean those against the war.

              • Duffy, I just spit Dr. Pepper all over my keyboard.

I was a junior in HS when they first instituted the SOLs in VA. We didn't have to take them to graduate, but we were captive "test subjects".

My entire English class was in shock when we opened up our 11th Grade English SOL and the first page was HOW TO READ A TELEPHONE BILL. And not a complicated one, either. Questions included: "What would the total charges for the month be?" On a test for juniors in high school!

                      • SOLs

In VA at least, the "SOLs" are "Standards of Learning" tests in the core subjects (math, english, history, science - I think???) You must pass with X score in your tests to graduate (I don't really know the specifics, it's after my time). If schools as a whole do not do well over a period of time, they risk losing their accredidation/funding/etc.

It's part of the new wave of state standardized testing in high school. It's still a VERY contentious topic, for good reason.

                            • 1. Allah and the Christian God are the same God since all are descended from Abraham and the village of Abraham is UR in what is now Iraq.

Abraham poor man must feel dreadful knowing his legacy spawned all three religions and all of his children hate each other from each religion fight with each other. Since God favored Abraham, I guess he's pretty disappointed in all of us too.

Every religion has it's big mouths and it's idiots. No point in being angry about a man who is too deaf to hear what other people say, that's his burden and not yours.

                              2. On BBC they said that the Museum people had been warned and put all their most valuable collections in safe vaults. Now, if we were there and guarded the museum and then had to shoot some of the Iraqi who were looting, what would you all have said?

Baghdad is not at peace! There are still groops of fanatic Saddam followers from Iraq and Syria determined to win those 6 virgins and be martyrs. So would you prefer it if our troops had split up and guarded the hospitals and the museum and then got picked off one at a time?

The fact is that with all you doomsday followers it wouldn't matter because whatever we as Americans do, it just isn't good enough. You liked Clinton because he didn't care what was right he cared what you thought was right today. Put his finger up and tested which way the wind was blowing each day.

I don't agree that's the right way to govern anything. I think a man/woman of principle, whatever the religious experience should do what they believe is right to be done and not worry about the cost, or the jeopardy to personal well being.

                              • Not to hijack the thread in a different direction, but many teachers in VA complain that instead of teaching for overall knowledge & understanding, they're teaching to a test instead. Which is true, I think. Basically they know what will be on the SOL, and that's what they teach. And drill in preperation, etc etc etc.

                                • The issue of healthcare is an interesting one. People in the US are rarely denied hospital care because they can't afford it. They are referred to specific hospitals who contract with the state to care for them. Who pays for it then? Everyone who can pay their costs does.

But on a subtler level, we have choices that would never exist in a system of nationalized healthcare. When my oldest soon was born, his medical bills were over $500,000. Thank God, we had real insurance "back it the day". He had access to leading edge medical care (at a state contracted hospital that also happened to be a research instution). There was a resident at the hospital who was not from the US (I think he was Canadian, but I can't swear to it). He said the kind of care my son required would not even exist in his country because it was too expensive, way beyond the protocols/guidlines established by the healthcare system in his country.
See those flying monkeys? They work for me.

SLW - we already knew that about GWB the first time he opened his mouth. But I like him anyway. Where did you put that Tunnel of Optimism? My mostly-negative dtr is more positive about the US than most people here.

Coreene - this tread is about supporting our troops in Iraq, not "how many ways does the US suck" which it has turned into.

                                    • Albion, it is not just in high school! It starts in Elementary school! My kids' school is ranked right up there every year and they feel they need to stay there.

The poor teachers are not allowed to be individuals because pretty much 100% of their time is spent force-feeding mostly useless factoids into the childrens' brains. I understand why it was initially needed. But, stop penalizing the schools that DO have teachers who know how to teach and allow them to teach the children - not just how to take standardized tests.

My daughter didn't do particularly well on one prep-test on Native Americans' different abodes, foods, etc. in the State of Virginia. (If they didn't have a yankee for a mother, I'm not sure they would realize that there are other States other than Virginia and North Carolina.) She was supposed to memorize which tribes used what kind of mud on their tepees... Which kinds of berries which tribes ate... etc.

We had standardized tests in 3rd, 5th, & 6th grade? Or something like that. And I *believe* that we had some sort of VA state test on VA history, which is what we did in 3rd grade.
