Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

  • Last time I looked, if you were born in this country, you were allowed to live here. You didn't have to agree with what the government did as a requisite for being able to stay. People who agree and people who disagree both have their tax dollars used the same way.

They don't dole out freedom in the US based on whether or not you agree with what our current Administration, or any other Administration, is doing. So while some people agree that this war is a good thing and some people agree that this war is a bad thing, how very sad that people on this thread are being belittled for voicing their opinions, which BTW is something that our Constitution entitles us to.

Not sad at all, my lovely CA compatriot.

Rather, telling somebody that their opinion is a load of crap is a *similar* exercise of a Constitutional right as opposed to being a sad thing.

<<elizabeth now flees to avoid finding out the hard way if coreene is exercising her "Constitutional" right to carry arms. >>

      • True, Elizabeth, but I find that some people (on both sides of this issue) seem to be exercising better manners than others - I've always found phrases like "I beg to differ" worked better than calling someone a blowhole. Well, not that we've seen blowhole here yet, but I am sure it will come.

I have never heard the above-mentioned b-word used in the manner you intimate. It made me chuckle right out loud, 'cause isn't a blowhole the thing that whales have on top of their. . . uhm. . . head(?) for breathing purposes? Great - now I'm waiting anxiously to see if someone posts to confirm what a blowhole is (other than its less flattering meaning).

          You have made my day!

          • Watching the purported Saddam Hussein's speech last night, repeating the words, "peace" and "humanity", yes, did feel a strong urge to shout out, 'just detonate the largest bomb ya got and rid the earth of that blow-hole'.

            • If you watch that Michael Douglas / Annette Bening movie where he is the prez, he does refer to someone as a blowhole! I do believe you could substitute blowhole for windbag and gasbag.

              • OK Snowbird,

I have by and large agreed with most of what you have said in most of your posts. Here is a surprise for you though. I am (on most issues) a tree hugging liberal. I have never voted for a republican in my life.

I support this military action for the very reasons that you outline (check some of my recent posts). I think it is intolerable that the people of the world should be threatened by this nutcase, Saddam and I feel badly for the people who live in Iraq. I hoped that this military action would never come, but I knew in my heart that it would because of the behaviour Saddam has always displayed. I think it is right for us to try to correct these evils because we can. I find it sad that that many people are soooo distrustful of the motives of our leaders (be they republican or democrats). I long for peace but I think I am realistic about the world we live in.

Well to my point, the Hollywood types are who they are. To be in that industry I think one must perpetuate a certain amount of self centeredness. And I think that extrapolates into politics. It is easier to pacify oneself with the idea that "All killing is wrong, so we should not go to war" than to roll up your sleeves and make a commitment to what is likely to a long process that is fraught with peril and expense, to our nation and especially to our politician's careers. It stikes me as funny that what we will be doing here is nation building really- isn't that a conservative taboo?

There are a lot of contradictions and ironies in this situation. Thank God, there are those who are willing to do and say what they think is the right thing. I include George Bush, the Hollywood types and Al Gore (who I voted for) in this group. I think that these people as fellow citizens of our world should be accorded some respect.

PS Flashy Gray, thanks for the "cheese eating surrender monkeys", I still laugh so hard it brings tears to my eyes for that one

                      Oh Coreene, you pessimist!

Personally on this thread I have referred to all the other posters who don't agree with me as lefties. MattSimpson (proudly, I might add) called himself a "tree hugger."

I am guilty of calling the French "cheese-eating surrender monkeys."

                      But - blowhole???!!! How rude!

                          • I'm not even going to touch Sept. 11th so that you small minded, flag waving soccer moms call berate me. I'm just not in the mood.

You wouldn't be attacking me if I hadn't touched a nerve. I do not love getting conservatives riled up, I think the fact that I'm a liberal pacifist pretty much explains my dislike of confrontation, in all forms. However, you questioned my husbands worth as a human being. That just proves your hateful nature.

Were any of you there with us, experiencing what we did? Anyone? No?

ise@ssl, did you not read that he was signal corps, not infantry? My husband was the guy on the radio when the infantry called for artillery, or medical assistance. There are two types of people in the military - those that are smart, and those that can lift heavy things. You have to be a certain type of person to fight on the front lines. My husband just happened to score off the ASVAB charts, and was placed in a MOS that would put his skills to use in the best way for the good of the Army.

Hey dcm, my husband served so that I could insult our president. I think that's a fairly simple tenet for you to understand. Julie, your reading comprehension is poor - he was a highly decorated soldier who was HONORABLY discharged. No malcontent to speak of.

You people don't seem to listen very well. My husband has not spent any of the money earmarked for his education after working 70 hour weeks at 50 cents an hour for four years!!!! He earned that money people. Please try and comprehend this, I know it's hard when you have no idea what I'm referring to.

Duffy, it makes me happy to hear that the Army is building more housing - we were gouged several times and chose to live 30 miles away to try and avoid the crooked landlords. The Army does nothing to educate against the dealings of certain business owners (pay day advance places are first on my list!), until AFTER you can't pay your bills. The Army is a great opportunity for minorities, but there is still an ugly racial divide. There are many, MANY racists in the Army - I felt like there was a stronger concentration of them than I had ever encountered in my short lifetime.

I fail to see how personally attacking me and my beliefs is really getting us anywhere....again, it just confirms my view of conservatives - hateful, close-minded people. I am done debating this. No one is changing my mind regarding personal experiences I had, and no one else is going to change their minds either. I'm going out to the barn now to hug my horse.

Forgive me for the name calling Coreene, I could not contain myself! You know Donnie, and a kinder, gentler soul you could not meet. They're just jealous.

                                    • I have the most fun when name calling begins, because I don't fit any sterotype. I have almost always voted a Republican line, and if asked I would definitely classify myself as a conservative. I'm for the environment almost always, yet I'm fully against any Eco-terroist activities, I'm for animal rights yet wouldn't give PETA the time of day. So you have to just call me crazy I guess.

I know this, I've seen war ... I HATE war. It's no way to treat human beings, period. I've read about the history of the Bush clan and I wouldn't, I don't, trust them, period. Ridding the world of people like Sadam and despots in general is a goal decent society of all nations should be striving for. But,I don't buy for an mili-second that this war is about ridding the world of Sadam.

In this morning's paper there was a very well written article that pointed out all that COULD have been done before we came to the point of attacking Irag ... and wasn't. From the first words of this that came out of Bush's mouth I knew this day would come. His demeanor and apparent purpose never wavered from war, not even a little.

I have no proof beyond what's already been presented here (and elsewhere) that the REAL motive of this war is ***OIL***, period. But I know IF I wanted to controll Iraqi oil I would have done exatly as this administration has, there is no other explination for their behavior.

Do I support our young men an women, no matter what motivated them to join, of our Armed Forces, Absa-by-God-lutely. I pray everyone of them comes back safe and un-scared, physically or mentally, by this ordeal. (I'm not foolish enough to think that I'm fit enough to be there now, I can't see at night I have a hell of a time standing up after I take my horse's boots off because of old knee injuries. But I'd take one of their places if I could not because I think I could do any good or belive in this cause. But to save one young soul from knowing war, yes I would. In a heart beat if they'ed let me.) I also pray for those poor inocent Iraqis that are caught in the middle of this BS. In the end my MOST FERVENT PRAYER is that the good people of this world will finally see WAR for what it is and say NO MORE ... EVER. And find a way to make that dream come true.

                                        • We've had two wars to end all war. It doesn't work because every power crazed despot takes that for a weakness. So, a new despot rises to fill the empty spaces left by peace.

There is a difference between being a tree hugger and a Democrat and a true liberal. I can respect and protect the life of one who has not yet had a chance to make a mistake and not be upset if someone who is a sociapath has his life taken.

There are proportions and balance and like with all the other factions there are extremists that incubate anti-social attitudes. If Saddem Hussein were an American he would claim it isn't his fault, he suffered a trauma when his mother didn't want him as a baby and he was abused as a child and he would then seek rehabilitation insstead of retribution.

There are however consequences for anti-social behavior even within a family. I could be a tree hugger but not if it meant that living people would starve. I don't think we need oil and that our society could properly function with fuel cells.

I think there bad folks on both extreme sides of any issue and that the middle of the road is better. I think it is uncivilized to stab someone in the back without warning. I think I would like it the old way when two champions were selected from each side and the winner took all. I think it is civilized to send out a warning and to declare your intentions before you shoot the guy.

I think that many folks who have a philosophy do not follow through and only pick some issues that don't affect them to be liberal. I think if those artists who use their manufactured image to impress society as true liberals should give away all those millions and live like the rest of us on a budget.

And, nhwr you are proof that it is possible to agree on principals even when we may disagree on our value judgments of people. There are many Democrats who are my best friends. No side is either all right or all wrong. Neither side has leaders who are perfect and certainly none that will be elevated to sainthood.
