Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

Thanks for being a part of the COTH forums!

  • Well Beezer there we agree the brain is like a muscle and it needs to be exercised lest it become atrophied.

I think the brain exercise is good and do not agree that the thread should be ended but rather that we start a new thread on the concepts of if and how this will improve or impact on the world at large.

I think that there was much to be said for the first freedom the Iraqi experienced the past 3 days celebrating where it was forbidden. I do not find it necessary that they credit us or even love us but that they can have an opportunity for the life they seek is a joy that I am glad we gave to them.

If someone accomplishes a good thing it doesn't make it a bad thing if every aspect was not as perfect as might have been expected.

    • In response to the "France Debate"

The Complete Military History of France

      * Gallic Wars - Lost. In a war whose ending
      foreshadows the next 2000
years of French history, France is conquered by, of
      all things, an
      Italian.

      * Hundred Years War - Mostly lost, saved at last by
      female schizophrenic
who inadvertently creates The First Rule of French
      Warfare; "France's
      armies
are only victorious when not led by a Frenchman."

      * Italian Wars - Lost. France becomes the first and
      only country to ever
lose two wars when fighting Italians.

      * Wars of Religion - France goes 0-5-4 against the
      Huguenots

      * Thirty Years War - France is technically not a
      participant, but
manages to get invaded anyway. Claims a tie on the
      basis that eventually
the other participants started ignoring her.

      * War of Devolution - Tied. Frenchmen take to wearing
      red flowerpots as
      chapeaux.

      * The Dutch War - Tied

      * War of the Augsburg League/King William's War/French
      and Indian War -
Lost, but claimed as a tie. Three "ties" in a row
      induces deluded
Frogophiles the world over to label the period as the
      height of French
      military power.

      * War of the Spanish Succession - Lost. The War also
gave the French their first taste of a Marlboro, which
      they have loved ever since.

      * American Revolution - In a move that will become
      quite familiar to
future Americans, France claims a win even though the
      formerly English
colonists saw far more action. This is later known as
      "de Gaulle
      Syndrome",
and leads to the Second Rule of French warfare; "
      France only wins when
America does most of the fighting."

      * French Revolution - Won, primarily due the fact that
      the opponent was
      also French.

      * The Napoleonic Wars - Lost. Temporary victories
      (remember the First
Rule!) due to leadership of a Corsican, who ended up
      being no match for a
      British footwear designer.

      * The Franco-Prussian War - Lost. Germany first plays
      the role of drunk
Frat boy to France 's ugly girl home alone on a
      Saturday night.

      * World War I - Tied and on the way to losing, France
      is saved by the
United States . Thousands of French women find out
      what it's like to not
only sleep with a winner, but one who doesn't call her
      "Fraulein." Sadly,
widespread use of condoms by American forces
      forestalls any improvement
      in
      the French bloodline.

      * World War II - Lost. Conquered French liberated by
      the United States
      and
Britain just as they finish learning the Horst Wessel
      Song.

      * War in Indochina - Lost. French forces plead
      sickness, take to bed
      with the Dien Bien Flu

      * Algerian Rebellion - Lost. Loss marks the first
      defeat of a western
army by a Non-Turkic Muslim force since the Crusades,
      and produces the
      First
Rule of Muslim Warfare; "We can always beat the
      French." This rule is
identical to the First Rules of the Italians,
      Russians, Germans, English,
      Dutch, Spanish, Vietnamese and Esquimaux.

      * War on Terrorism - France, keeping in mind its
      recent history,
surrenders to Germans and Muslims just to be safe.
      Attempts to surrender
      to
the Vietnamese ambassador fail after he takes refuge
      in a McDonald's.

The question for any country silly enough to count on
      the French should
not be "Can we count on the French?", but rather "How
      long until France
      collapses?"

George Bush Sr. is an intelligent man, however, but after Bush 1 and Carter, we have not had thinkers of that caliber in the White House. Carter was so right in so many things he said. I remember watching the 'national malaise' speech so many got their knickers in a twist over, and why? Because he told the truth.

timedjumpoff, J. Carter is highly respected the world over for his statesman abilities.

We got rid of Saddam and their sect (60% of the Iraqi population)was quite well organized and is rapidly moving in to take predominant power. Only trouble for Iraq is that they want to ban music and 'entertainment' and have a Taliban-like rigidly controlled society (rigidly controlled only by them, of course) and one of their foundation tenets is an unabashed "Death to Israel" plank in the platform. Better the devil you know than the devil you don't....these folks may plot more stuff against the US than Saddam! Time will tell.

                                  • Too late, buryinghill1! That one made the rounds just a very few pages ago. Gotta get new material. I think we need to do searches before posting articles because someone probably already has.

Perhaps not the most powerful president we've had, but certainly extremely intelligent, integrity that cannot be questioned, and respected by world leaders everywhere.

Or, do they just capriciously give out that little award he recently got? What was it? Oh yeah, the Nobel Peace Prize!

No Laurie, they're very careful about giving out the Nobel Peace prize--they favor those who do the best job of bashing America in the eyes of the world...Carter, Arafat, etc. Like the UN, the Nobel Peace Prize is now a vehicle for those who would seek to enhance their own legacy by jealously demeaning ours. Of course Jimmy is respected by world leaders, since he's never had very much from America's.

That is the one of the most ridiculous statements I have seen on this long and bloated thread. Congratulations, you must be so proud!
