Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

Good grief, *this whole thread* has been about the fact that this is just the beginning.

Think about it, lilblackhorse, your last post is as though you haven't read a thing here.

    • Ah, yes, the vast Conservative Right Wing Conspiracy to Control the World and Preserve the American Way of Life. The only true evil in our world today.

This has been a great thread, but for the most part, "this has been a really good dialogue about matters" when you agree with the anti-war side. If you agree with the administration's stance, you were barraged with charges of being closed minded, lemming-like behavior, and anti-Bush epitaphs. I don't consider that "good dialoge".

I say "farewell, oh great monster thread, long may you live in infamy!"

      • dcm, I sure would like to know where this bashing of the GWB followers has been going on, because I sure don't see it. Perhaps you could enlighten me?

Portia, I wish you would reconsider. I think this "world event" is just getting started, and the things that we questioners of the war are concerned about are only now going to have their chance to come to light - or not. Everyday brings a new event that deserves comment. Please?

        • dcm, I don't understand why you think you were so attacked here. I have to say I think there were as many pros and anti's here.

You've gotten a bit snippy here at times and threatened to take your marbles and go home, yet kept returning. Just because I didn't come out and say "I support you" doesn't mean I didn't read every single post here on this thread-and I agreed with some of what was said from your side. Have I changed my mind completely? No-have I been enlightened to the reasons about this war? Most definitely.

I don't consider myself a lemming, nor do I consider myself closed minded. What did you think we were all going to do? Read your posts and immediately realize we were wrong and jump up in support? Good grief.....I never thought YOU were going to read our concerns with this invasion and jump over to our side which questioned the motivation to attack Iraq. I don't understand why you are so defensive.

I would bet that others really learned a lot from this thread--your comments can be in turn switched to "our" side and can be said the same way.

"if you DISAGREE with the administration's stance, you were barraged with charges of being closed minded, lemming-like behavior, and Pro Bush epitaphs (sic)" (I think the word is 'epithet'). See, I think your quote works both ways.

You can pick up those marbles now dcm.

          • Of course it's not "over over there" (in the words of the WWII song), but this thread is now at 120 pages. It's not going to be closed immediately; everyone still has time to get their say in.

When there's a significant new development in these world events, someone can start a new thread.

(I asked you this on another thread but it's dropped back now):

Did you name your horse Portia before or after you became a lawyer? Just wondered, as it's so appropriate.

              • lauriep and lilblackhorse -

The thread started out as a prayer for the safety of our soldiers. It turned into a debate of pro and con on the war itself. Then it morphed into what bad things have the Americans done in Iraq and the world over, and the bad people in the current administration and their connection to the vast Right Wing Conspiracy theory. Things started to heat up here. I suggested, somewhere around page 98 that as a break, we come up with something positive that America has contributed then go back to our discussion the next day. The next morning, I find I got slammed: Eomer's response to my ligitimate question of his military background - "more than just a mom" (Eomer and I are at peace, even if we cannot agree on this topic); bgoosewood's response to my statement that I also have the right to free speech "I think you forgot your "nanny nanny boo boo" on that one", afterwards accused me of being snippy, and then left with the implication that I was tedious and definately not worth common respect; and lauriep's own question "dcm, were you even around for the Vietnam war?". Holy cow, can I not disagree and ask questions, too? Apparently not. I felt belittled, insulted, and denigrated. I snapped back. Not one of my shining moments, but nor was it the perpetrators'. At least I can admit to bad behavior. The personal attacks on me were unforgivable.

The lemming comments go way back to the first few pages, but I don't have time to search this entire thread looking for people's comments. It was used in reference to those who support the current administration, not to those who don't.

I never asked anyone to change their minds, just consider others' opinions. I did many times.

"You can pick up those marbles now dcm." Thanks. Point proven.

                    • One more time. dcm, I asked you that because I had NO WAY OF KNOWING how old you are! If you were 20-something, you wouldn't have the same perspective on that war as the 40-50 crowd here. If you choose to see that as an attack, I can't help it, or you.

Additionally, a sense of humor about some of the posts on this thread might have been a good thing to employ. I've had my posts questioned here, several times, but I don't let a BB either ruin my day or make me feel "belittled, insulted, and denigrated."

Although I haven't changed my mind on my view of the war, I have learned a HELL of a lot on this thread, done some reading I would not otherwise have done, and listened with admiration to many posters from both sides of the argument. The difference between you and me is that I see all the positives on this thread and you choose to focus on the negatives.

                      To each his own.

                              • LILBLACKHORSE.....for a few minutes, you really had me going there with the Thom Hartman article you posted. A well-thought out piece with logical arguments I could appreciate even though most of which I would have to disagree.

Nevertheless, it made me understand how support for the liberal side could as strong as it is.

THAT IS UNTIL I got to the part about JIMMY CARTER....that blew it for me and made me wonder if the whole article had not been a tongue-in-cheek farce all along. I'll list few excerpts"

........."The last American statesman to put forth a different vision was President Jimmy Carter, who candidly pointed out to the American people that oil was a dwindling domestic resource. Carter said that we mustn't find ourselves in a position of having to fight wars to seize other people's oil.........."

Last American statesman....? PULEEEZE. Jimmy Carter couldn't fight his way out of a paper bag or did you forget his years of failed attempts, both politically and militarily, to free our hostages from Iran before he left office. Even for humanitarian reason, he was ineffective...or don't the thousands of Cambodians killed under Po Phat(sp?) count?

........."Ronald Reagan's first official act of office was to remove Carter's solar panels from the roof of the White House. He then repealed Carter's tax incentives for renewable energy and killed off an entire industry. No
president since then has had the courage or vision to face the hard reality that Carter shared with us"................

That's right, while Jimmy Carter was putting up solar panels finding new tax incentives, Ronald Reagan was tearing down walls (remember Berlin) and the dictatorships (remember the Soviet Union) that endeangered the whole world. Not to mention helping build the strongest economy ever experienced (or maybe you don't remember the 17%+ mortgage rates during Carter's reign)

..........."And so now we discover these oddities. Osama bin Laden, for example,
explicitly said that he had attacked the US because we had troops stationed on the holy soil of his homeland".............

Isn't this (Saudi Arabia) the same homeland (and his birthplace) he had been asked to leave and never return to years before by the Saudi government?

I'll buy into your liberal-biased arguments up to a point, but these are blatant examples of well-articulated thoughts and the right to dissent that many see as efforts by the left (just like our enemies) to paint America in the worst light possible. Sorry, but it's hard to separate rightful dissent from America-bashing for a lot of us non-intellectuals.
                                "WHINNYING" IS EVERYTHING!!

I thought it might be fun to condense into one post all the things I learned on this thread:

                                      1) Tony Blair does not exist.

                                      2) Sweeden is the bestest place in the world to live.

                                      3) UN weapons inspectors alerted coalition forces of the possibility that Iraq might have weapons with wheels on them.

                                      4) 54% of Canadians do not support the majority.

                                      5) The inherent advantages of socialism should be apparent to anyone who lives near Detroit.

Yet again, someone steps up and proves the point that if you can't argue and debate reasonably, hurl insults and pretend it makes your point. Although I will admit, I was about to congratulate you for finally realizing the truth -- please note that that is A JOKE.

Debate between disagreeing adults is a wonderful, invigorating exercise. It can be done -- on both sides and every nuanced side in between -- without resorting petty name-calling by anyone.

Or at least this un-American, unpatriotic, Saddam-loving, peacemongering, left-wing, liberal elitest (did I miss any others??) thinks so.

                                        • You forgot bed-wetting, Beezer.

I'm actually quite encouraged by most of the posts on this thread - they're evidence that people are reading, thinking, drawing their own conclusions. That we can all read the same article and come to very different conclusions, well, that's also evidence of independent minds; though, yes, it's also baffling at times.

I'd also like to state, for the record, that I think the U.S. is a fabulous country, its citizens among the warmest in the world. Nowhere else in the world can you wander down a country road - and every second driver waves with a big ole smile on their face. Nowhere else in the world will a complete stranger rush to your defence when they sense that you're in danger. There's an openness and grace to Americans that's yet to be found elsewhere in the world - and, shudders, especially France.

My experiences in the U.S. have been wonderful and I count Americans among my closest friends; my fear, though, is that all that makes Americans so wonderful is being undermined by a paranoid and overly aggressive foreign policy - and that it will all somehow taint the glory of the American psyche.

And with that, do I get the last post on this thread?
