Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

IMHO religion and politics do NOT belong in any sort of business setting, unless of course it's a religious or political type business (which is not the case in this thread). That said, all employees will have their own personal views. If you don't want to know one's personal views, don't add their personal Facebook page, which is a legitimate outlet for ones beliefs.

I feel that professionals should have a "professional" account on facebook under a company name or whatnot and those postings should always be business related.

If adding a personal account, then do so at your own risk, I say.

As for in person conversations, if it is getting uncomfortable, just try and change the conversation. Silence works too. I guess I try and just talk horses or hooves or whatever and the conversations usually don't stray too far!

I don't chew off people's ears with politics and religion, and I appreciate my professionals for not doing it to me. The horse professionals usually have enough horse talk to engage in. I deliberately remain quiet while they are working. If they wish to talk horses, they do. If not, it is pleasantly quiet.

I will say we have a very nice Christian girl at the barn who had a habit of engaging vets, farriers and dentists in religious conversation in an attempt to convert them to her way of thinking. All were polite, but the dentist took it a step further when he began talking back to her about when the world revolved around the mother god and all was peaceful and well, then the male dominated religions came about by supplanting the peaceful bountiful mother god (citing historical and mythological references, etc etc etc) and thus brought about all of the madness and mayhem today. I was ready to flee the barn after 5 minutes of this, because I know how intelligent this man is and I could tell she was in for one heck of a talking to. It went on and on for 45 solid minutes, with him reciting chapter and verse the whole way. Her young daughter whom she home schools was right there, so I could see she couldn't respond in the way she wanted to, and the kid was wide-eyed at this take on the religious world, which was just gushing out of this guy's mouth.

She has never brought it up again in the barn. Amen.

Facebook? Couldn't give a damn, never read it and sure don't care to. It's up their with Twitter...also who gives a hoot about the blatherings of uninteresting people.

I've never had a farrier or vet speak of religion. I don't care what someone's religion is. If someone brings up politics, I'll try and ignore them unless they get obnoxious...same way with current events...I just ignore their rantings. Can't stand the pamphlet idiots who are 19 and lecturing everyone how things were when they never dealt with anything first hand they're talking about.

Oh well...I do stop people when they use the word "homophobic" when describing someone who doesn't see homosexuality as something positive. It's not "phobic" to find a behaviour disgusting or not a good thing...it's a difference in values/faith/belief/culture and not a psychological irrational fear or phobia. You can dislike something without fearing it.

Notice many "professionals" that are promoting themselves on social media like Facebook, posting highly charged religious and political views. Some are bigotted, racist, sexist and homophobic.

Could or would you keep a farrier that is great with your horses that was a bigot?

How about a Vet that was constantly prostilatizing?

Personally I believe that a true professional on talks about the subject at hand. I don't want to know their personal views.
Well yeah, I know some 'Crazy Christian' farriers. And the racism of some folks. Wowza wow !!

Farriers are the worst, in my experience. Probably because they work themselves to death, in a lot of cases. They are in pain. Tired. Dirty. And have been wrestled with wretched killer beasties all day. So they have a tendency to, um..., vent.

In my neck of the woods there are lots of gay folks with $$$$$. (Lots of all sorts of folks with $$$) So I have never, ever, heard any anti guy chatter. BNTs would be out some big clients !!

              Sexist, OMG, yes.

On this topic overall I'll have to say it depends a lot on who you are. I don't take crapola from nobody. So any farrier, vet, etc who knows me will back way down if I pull out my rolled up newspaper and start spanking them. (Ok, some of they like that part.....)

But I see plenty of folks in the horse business who are just begging for someone to 'lord it over them.' They seem to thrive on indulging super big egos and placating bombastic jerks. I can totally see how someone with an agenda would be on perpetual prowl for those type of people.

Now that you've radically altered your original post to back up the above diatribe, what can I say? Because, that's NOT how you portrayed the woman at whatever barn you were working at, it was the political conversation...which, didn't sound like it involved you, anyway...and Rush Limbaugh on the radio you objected to. Obviously, what you are now stating would be offensive to any reasonable person...it's just a wee bit disingenuous you had to change the commentary to justify your arrogance.
Is it me or do 99.9% of cowboys just look better with their hats on?

Maybe you shouldn't be so fast to jump to conclusions before you slam someone or maybe ask for clarification?

Go back and reread my first post again. I realize it was in two different paragraphs but in the first part I mentioned about having to listen to racist discussions nasty enough to make me want to take a shower. That was the same place who also had Rush Limbaugh blasting VERY loudly at the same time also spewing hate and nastiness about the upcoming election...this was 2008...African American candidate...racism...get it now? It was overpowering and very unpleasant and when I asked this very bigoted lady to tone done her comments and turn down the radio which she was shouting over, I was trying to salvage the situation or I was going to have to leave and not finish all the horses.

I was actually trying to not go into specifics in my first post for a reason...I did not want to go OT as we are now...I did not mean to be intentionally misleading to anyone but after you jumped all over me how you interpreted my actions in that situation, I felt more explanation was called for.

I did reread (especially for comprehension) all three versions...the original, the radically altered, and now the re-edited to its non-radically-altered form. Didn't see a need for clarification until things started being tweaked. Ah, the magic of editing.

As I mentioned before, this was not how your post portrayed the woman. If you weren't clear with your original post, so be it...just don't be surprised when someone calls you out on it. FTR, having listened to Rush Limbaugh on occasion...can take or leave him...you're being disingenuous again by implying he's racist and bigoted.

I don't think this off topic at all. You claim to be a 'professional'...as the title of this thread references...I called you out on a post in which I perceived as 'un'-professional behavior. It happens. Now, that you HAVE clarified your story, I'll accept that. Carry on.

If they want to express their opinion on their own time (Facebook, Twitter, whatever) that's their business. They're as entitled to express their own opinion as anyone else. The fact that they're a professional doesn't mean they're any more "right" in what they believe.

But when I'm paying them for their time - a vet visit, a farrier appointment, a riding lesson - I am paying them for their professional expertise, not to hear their opinions on things that have nothing to do with what I am paying them for.

Lots of businesses around here have religious symbolism, slogans, etc. post in the shop, on bumpers, etc. As a rule, I don't care. I patronize them because they are good at what they do, not how they see divine/spiritual beings.

They have a right to express themselves. I have a right to ignore it.

Pardon me but I didn't edit anything. I simply explained and clarified the original post you found so upsetting so you would understand what I meant. If that causes you to get your panties further into a wad, it's not my problem.

The thing about horses is that the place that some folks are working (vets, farriers, barn managers) is the place where most everyone else is recreating. And over time, you are going to get an idea where folks stand on many questions.... which is fine. But everyone should refrain from rubbing other folks noses in contentious opinions and conversations that they don't seek out or want to engage in. That's just decent manners, regardless of the presence or absence of horses.

I have a number of horsey colleagues who I'm quite certain I strongly disagree with about a BUNCH of things, but I would rather eat a saddle pad than ever discuss those things at the barn. I value the peace and tranquility of that environment too much to let it get riled up by religion and politics.

It would be really nice if more people took this approach.... sadly, compulsive proselytizers are often VERY oblivious of the unhappiness of their audiences.
I tolerate all kinds of animal idiosyncrasies.
                                I've found that I don't tolerate people idiosyncrasies as well. - Casey09

Exactly. I tend not to talk about this stuff at the barn. Every once in a while I will correct a factual error, but that's it.

I'm Jewish, and was happy when I was warned that one of the teen boarders held rabid anti-Jewish views (actually, they were her father's views, and to this day I am not sure whether she believed any of it, or was just trying to get a rise out of folks, which was one of her favorite hobbies.) BO is pretty strict about prejudice and drama.

At my old barn, during the 2008 election season the BO changed the barn radio to a station that did not accept political ads. Not that anyone was going to get into it about politics, but everyone was sick of the ads. That barn was about 50-50 R vs. D.

It goes both ways. I know one BO who had a parent demand she take down a mildly political sign on the first visit because he found it "offensive". Her barn, her property, he was invited to not return if he was that upset by it.

It's even worse when people have the expectation that others can and should agree with any opinions, beliefs, or positions that they have about anything and everything. I'm seeing a lot of that with younger people these days who have rose-colored viewpoints about certain things where the reality of matters are completely the opposite of what they think is true.
