Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

  • I thought that cedar roofs were made illegal about 20 years ago. Maybe it was the county rather than the state or something. What I remember is that you can't install a new one and can repair old ones but after about 20 years all of them have to be replaced. Our county hasn't come knocking on our door, though, and we have one. If it was illegal, I'm sure they would let us know.

These fires are international news. In the last three days, we've had emails from two different places in Australia, phone calls from India and England.

Yup. My cousins fiancee is from Denver. We just had a family wedding in England last night and all she got was questions about the fires. I felt awful for her too because her brother is wildfire fighter, so she must be really worried about him, and it is intimidating enough to meet a whole bunch of crazy British relatives at once.

I hope everyone is holding up ok - it is terrifying reading/hearing about it it on the news.

      • I've also had friends in Poland, Germany and Japan, along with family in New Zealand contact me about the fires.

Today is a day of rest (and laundry!!) for me, so I am going to enjoy it! Just family time and a GOOD run (finally) tonight. I think maybe our little slice of the world might be starting to return to some semblance of "normal..." at least for a bit.

        • Coyoteco-some HOA's still require shake roof (starts out fire resistent and quickly isn't, and turns into a tinderbox) or else extremely expensive metal red-tile looking things. A man a few years ago in the Springs replaced his shake roof with very nice architectural shingles, and got sued by the HOA. It went on until the man died of cancer, and the HOA only forgave the fines (they come in effect when you sell) when the widow replaced the roof with the tile look metal. I'm not sure you can get a shake roof house insured either.

When they had the last big one in Woodland park (about 2001 to 2003 as I recall) the people living in the big houses on Cheyenne mountain, in heavily brushy areas couldn't get homeowners insurance for quite a while. I know a bunch of house sales were stopped for quite a while, and I don't know what happened after that.

          • Yeah, my daughter has a bunch of friends around Europe as she studied there for a couple of years. The funny thing is that no one was aware of the High Park fire for a long time - and it was huge and fast moving. There didn't even seem to be national coverage of it until the CS fire started. They are both just terrible.

One thing that occured to me because of something a fb friend said - she was concerned that her son was attending a wedding in CS. People may be avoiding coming here for vacation because of the fires and I do not think tha is necessary. People who had planned to come should come. Most things are going on as usual. The mountains are still beautiful and the mountain climate is sitll cool - a little hot on the front range and eastern plains, of course, but even that is getting better quickly.

            • According to the Fox Denver channel the Woodland park evacuation is ending, and Highway 24 will reopen today, if it hasn't already. However, on a disgusting note there have been many car breakins outside hotels and at evacuation sites, and there have been a number of house burglaries, and vandalisms.

Probably the same assholes that were leaving comments on new channels about how glad they were the rich people's houses were burning. What losers, to prey on the victims

                  Agreed!!

The reason this fire got the attention it did so quickly while High Park didn't is because it hit a major population, AND it hit that populated area with mass destruction over a two hour span. High Park took houses here and there over the span of a couple of weeks. Not to downplay it, but that's just how it operated.

The USFS guys rotating the tanker base that have done this for 20-30 years all said they have never seen a fire do that. Even Oakland, which they were there for. Fast moving destruction, yes....but not a fire that basically said "F You!" while flipping the bird and going totally homicidal like it was high off of bath salts. One thing is for certain: the fact it was ONLY 350 homes and two lives is an absolute miracle. Truly.

Highway 24 is scheduled to reopen...now, actually! 2pm. All HWY 24 corridor communities and Woodland Park mandatory evacuations have been lifted, though they remain on pre-evacuation status. Wonderful news!!!! Cog reopened, Pikes Peak Highway, Garden of the Gods, Palmer Park are all reopening tomorrow! On a selfish note, now I CAN get some more High Altitude and steep terrain training in before info TDY! I have 5 weeks until PPM, and I need to hit that area...it really does make a difference (versus training in other ranges and areas). Recreationally and tourism'y? We definitely NEED people to and visit. We are still open, do don't be afraid to visit!

Not being at work, I haven't caught many updates on Pine Ridge. How are our Western Slope folks doing?

                  • OH, Kenike, I agree that the CS fire was just as far as I know unprecedented. It's just that the High Park fire was big and very fast moving (moving a mile per hour), too, and it was before the news went to CS - a major, major fire to have so little coverage. CS came along and changed the standard, it's true. but before that High Park was setting records. Not a big deal that High Park was ignored, just a point of curiosity. Both were terrible, and CS was just hard to comprehend.

                    • Kenike, thanks for the info on the MFASS systems. So, it sounds like there
could have been 16 planes flying, 8 with the larger, newer system and 8 with
                      the smaller system????

Have you heard about the Evergreen Airlines B-747 super tanker designed to
fight wildfires--can drop 30,000 gallons at a pop and also operate at night?
Read that the feds wouldn't even talk to them. Here's a link:
                      http://www.evergreenaviation.com/supertanker/index.html

Boy, if there was ever a fire that would have benefitted from all the air power, it would seem to be this one which had an airport capable of handling
all size aircraft 15-20 miles from the fire. Sigh!

And thanks for all your behind the scenes reporting. Colorado is still near and
                      dear to my heart.

                      • Conceivably there could be 16 MAFFS planes flying, but that would be extremely rare.

Evergreen's 747 is controversial. There was talk of brining a DC-10 in to help with the drops, but when jokes about the 747 started it kinda got ugly. Springs Airport and Peterson could definitely handle it, though. I just don't know the full story there, only that it's a controversial subject.

                        • The DC tanker for fire fighting is great but not always practicle. With our fires here a couple of years ago we never had the tanker. Conditions were not right-there is more than an airport to consider.

County and state regulations trump a HOA . Also the issue of combustable roofs may actually be a condition of your house insurance. We have very few shake roofs here anymore and those roofs may not be insurable. However, if you have one you won't get a call telling you to remove it, you will be required to replace it if/when you are issued a permit from the local jurisdiction for another repair/remodel.

We were hit pretty hard in 2009/2010 and fire regulations have changed, especially since there is very little money to fund additional firefighting. More has to be done with less, and having homeowners take more responsiblity is more critical. You just can't assume that a DC 10 Tanker will always be there to drop fos chek on your home.

Hoping these fires are contained soon and that those fighting stay safe.

                          • 55% contained. Sounds like weather continues to be a challenge but the team in staying in front of it.

The folks in the severely burned out areas were let back in today for a brief time to see their homes (burned or not). Saying 4-6 weeks before they can return full time (for the ones that can).

Very interesting map prepared by the City that shows in some cases how fickle the fire was... burning one and leaving many others on a street or vice versa.

Around 6pm one of the aircraft "went down" in South Dakota while supporting the White Draw fire operations. 3 of the crew were taken to a hospital in Rapid City via helicopter, 3 remain unaccounted for. I ask you all to keep the families of this crew in prayer. This is a very, very difficult time for all of us, but especially for them.

                                    • I am currently living and working in a time zone 6 hours ahead of the Springs, but have been keeping a close watch on the Waldo Canyon fire as I have property (which wasn't near the fire at all) and family in COS.

Kenike, saw the news about the MAFFS flight down in SD this a.m. and I am very very sorry for this additional tragedy.

Was just at the Flying W in February for an event and it's sad to think the old place is gone. Was good to hear that their cattle had been rounded up and are in fairly good condition all things considered.

Anyone have any news on the Garden of the Gods Trading Post? I love that funny old place, actually, and their patio is a nice place to grab a lunch.

Also I am hoping that the GotG hack stables were able to evac their horses over to Penrose pretty quickly, too.

                                      • Stolen-I agree with what you said, but I couldn't believe that HOA actually sued for that, and kept up after the man was dead. That is one of the reasons that if I move where there is an HOA, it will be a minimally invasive one, with few rules, and no architectural committee. The HOAs here are mostly to run a neighborhood rec center and pool or something like that, or a few geared towards singles and retirees charge a HOA fee for lawn care and outside maintenance. The fact that people could die because of a stupid shake roof appalls me.
