Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

    • Oh, dear. 346 homes lost (so far) in the Waldo Canyon fire...

They seem to be making progress with the High Park fire though..

      • All I can say is Thank God that these wild-fires have not fire-stormed yet! Or there wouldnt be much out-running them. My bro was a volunteer FF in Australia who luckily missed the Victoria Firestorm a couple of years ago - that was devastating in the cost of lives lost. His mates were (during the body clean-up) cursing the people who didnt listen to the "EVACUATE NOW" orders.

I check in here and on FB as I have friends who live in/near Fort Collins (my geography of the area isnt great) and her husband is a fire-fighter.

PLEASE if you are told to evacuate, evacuate

Thats OK, a flash flood is easily avoided by staying away from vulnerable areas. Better the rain..

I read something on the Coloradoan that the poudre looks like an oil slick, it is so full of soot and ash

That's exactly what happened in the Springs Tuesday night, and why so many houses were lost and 32000 people evacuated. Winds of 65 miles an hour and there was nothing anyone could do but get out of the way.

There has been one fatality that we know of in the High Park fire (the one by Fort Collins) and it occured at the very beginning of the fire.
People have ,for the most part, been very smart about evacuating. It is terribly dry here with many dead trees (beetle kill) and one would have to be quite stupid to ignore evacuation orders.

I remember your terrible firestorms in Australia, they looked absolutely horrible.

Yes, there are concerns about water quality, and erosion from rain certainly won't help matters. The breweries in Fort Collins are struggling with the issue already..

                • Contamination of Horsetooth is a very big problem for many towns in the area that draw drinking water from there, but I was thrilled with the rain in FOCO. It petered out by the time it got to us, just wind.

Another big problem is the 2000 dairy goats set to converge on The Ranch for the national conference. Stampede will be over by then, so maybe evacuees could end up at Island Grove, but Weld CO Fair is the end of July. At least everyone can plan for another move

                  • RaeHughs, the Waldo Canyon Fire DID firestorm. It is now the most destructive fire in Colorado history.

346 homes destroyed (burned to the ground) on 35 streets, no number on damaged. 10 people have been reported missing. Fire still listed at 18,500 acres and 5% contained.

Someone asked about the Cliff Dwellings. They are fine (and non-native to the area, btw). Cave of the Winds is also fine. Certainly not out of the woods (no pun intended), but no damage.

We have dropped about 120,000 gallons of Phoscheck as of this afternoon. I've forgotten sortie rates. We are all tired, but it's nothing compared to the wildland crews, urban firefighters, police, hot shots and smoke jumpers.

I did see today on my way north to the barn that there was smoke coming off the front of the Flat Irons (or Bear mtn) toay as opposed to the back on Tuesday. The wind was calm when I was there so Im hoping they were able to get a ahead of that one.

                      kenike are you military?

                      • Waldo Canyon Fire:

Several evacuation areas have been lifted as of 8pm. The streets that have burned homes has been released.

                        Containment is at 10%.

There are "boots on the ground" in the Woodland Park area.

Then all I can say is THANK GOD this is not a heavily populated area of Colorado! In Victoria, when the wild-fires joined together and fire-stormed, the losses were a lot higher in a very quick succession - whole towns simply being wiped off the map in less than hours ... The video footage coming out of the US is not like that coming out of Victoria at the time - it looked like a volcanic eruption.

Not taking anything away from Colorado - it's horrific and the one thing I cant stand is fires - would rather drown at least it is supposed to be more "pleasant".

Oh well, probably just the news media under-reporting the real important stuff and over-reporting the celbutards ... as usual.

                            • We are hoping for a nice rain for several days to help the fire danger! Of course on the already burned area we don't want a flash flood which doesn't take much. But the rest of the state is in need of a lot of rain.
It has been a very stressful few weeks which doesn't seem like it will end soon for us animal/homeowners & all we want is RELIEF!!!! Praying for a nice monsoon season which should start in another two or three weeks.

Raehughs, Colorado Springs is the second largest city in the state. The fire just hit the northwest corner of it. Sorry our videos are not as spectacular as the ones in Victoria. 346 homes is still nothing to be laughed at, especially to those 346 families who are now homeless.

                                  • RaeHughs, are you freaking kidding me?!? Colorado Springs is the second largest city in the state with over a half-million people! How is that not very populated?? The fact it was ONLY 346 homes burned to the ground is an f'ing miracle. That number WILL grow as interiors and structural integrity of the homes still standing are inspected. You are not here and have NO idea what it was like to see and experience. These flames were screaming at 65+ mph and i can attest to the sound it was making resembling a freight train rolling down the I-25 spur. It LOOKED like a volcano, it had NO mercy, and it is not even close to being contained. You may not have meant to offend, but your latest statement just pissed me off but good. Good god...

JillInTX, yes. I am the Wing Historian for the 302d Airlift Wing, USAF Reserve, Peterson AFB. It is our C-130s conducting the Phoscheck retardant drops, with the help of the 153d Airlift Wing, WY ANG, Cheyenne. They will soon be rotated out for the 146th Airlift Wing, CA ANG, Channel Islands. I have been in the Air Force for 16 years (6 1/2 Active Duty, the rest as a Reservist). Thanks for asking (and sorry for the book).

The fire is now 15% contained and downgrade to 16,750 acres with better GPS mapping. That means Woodland Park and most of Teller County are mostly safe. They remain evacuated at this time. About half of the 32,500 people in Springs were allowed back home tonight, though they remain in a Pre-Evacuation status.

Now the sad news: the Waldo Canyon Fire is now fatal. 9 people remain missing, but the 10th was found in the rubble of their house tonight. I have a name, but it is from an unofficial source and it hasn't been released. I am sick and heartbroken over it. There is another individual listed as missing from this same home, but that person has not been located with the deceased.

I fear for one friend who now only has her car that took her to safety and the clothes she's been wearing since Tuesday. She does not handle stress well and I will not be surprised if she is hospitalized soon.

Lastly, it was confirmed the White House accepted the request for Expedited Major Disaster Declaration earlier this evening. This is not a surprise as it was announced the President is visiting tomorrow. National Guard units were activated earlier, too. Kind of obvious what was happening.

I am getting to bed late tonight with a heavy heart. I am recalled for Presidential Duty tomorrow, so long as the itinerary has not changed. Another superfire is happening on the Western Slope....and it's not good. Please keep Colorado in your thoughts
                                    and prayers.

Not surprising though , considering how the fire blew up with such speed. What a nightmare we are having...

Nothing to do, except to do EVERYTHING we can, and not give in to despair.

RaeHughes, I'm sure you did not intend to be insensitive (and I'm sure some folks here are not familiar with the tragic firestorm that happened in Australia).

I think everyone, here in Colorado, is feeling a bit raw at this point in time, thus the heated reaction, by some, to your post....

After seeing the devastation and how one home may be left standing surrounded by destruction I am so impressed and thankful for the firefighters that were in the middle of that doing their best and beyond to save what they could.

I watched the smoke increase as the firestorm started and saw the flames crest the hill just before I left work. Something I don't think I'll ever forget.

We had 29 people from my group that were evacuated and have yet to hear if any lost their homes.
