Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • TEXAS Rescue Advice?

I went today to check on a horse I saw in one of those bad CL ads. I was driving through and just wanted to make sure the horse was ok and do something if he wasn't. Well he's MUCH worse off than I expected. The guy literally got him to eat the weeds in his junkyard, and now all the weeds are gone and he doesn't want to feed him. He's in very poor weight, wormy and has an infected cut under his eye that isn't being treated. He's kept in the junkyard, tied up to a 20 ft rope. He gives him hay sometimes and sweet feed once a day.

I would appreciate any advice on what I can do here. I played real nice with the guy and took a couple pictures, he still wants $175 for the horse which he thinks is a steal. With hay prices from the drought, people are getting rid of good broke horses for that much, nobody is going to give him a chance, plus he has some nasty looking (but old and cold) rope burn scars on his hind legs that would make it really hard even to fix him up and rehome. I'm seriously considering getting him just to take him someplace peaceful, give him a bag of carrots and put him to sleep so he doesn't have to starve to death in this guys yard.

I highly doubt the authorities around here would do anything, as he does have water and there is "food" around. Part of me wants to call but I also don't want the owners to get mad because I'm sure they'll know it's me who called and if I CAN find a way to get him out, I want to be able to. Does anybody have suggestions for how to handle this or know of any rescues in the area who could take him?(I know that's a huuuuuge longshot but I have to ask). He is located in the Kingsville/Corpus Christi TX area. Thank you for any advice.

Send cowgirljenn a PM or report it through the Bluebonnet website http://www.bluebonnetequine.org/help/reportneglect.htm

Jenn may know your local authorities and can certainly advise you how to proceed. He looks like a great horse. What does/can he do? How old etc?

      Found the ad.

Looks like he may have diarrhea too..... or you've had rain (unlike us!) and it's flattened the poop. He's really a good looking horse and has a very sweet face.

Any idea on age and training and height? Looks like a 15 - 15.2h TB?

Thanks for the info on Bluebonnet, I was just doing a search to find them since I know they are close.

He's 9-10, about 15.2, I thought TB too but no tattoo. He really is a sweetheart, he acted completely oblivious when I approached him but definitely perked up when I scratched him, almost like he was surprised that somebody made him feel good! They said they rode him when they first got him and he rode and steered with no problem (and I can only imagine how they ride!). He does have some old rope scars. He looks much better in the first pic they posted on the sale ad (which was definitely awhile ago) and I bet he would really clean up to be a cute horse.

As for the diarrhea, for some reason the poop does that down here, I'm guessing from a combo of the humidity and heat? Dunno but even my horses' poop comes out totally normal and does that by the next day.

He may have sand in his gut causing the diarrhea or as you said, he could be wormy. I am about mid-point between Austin and Houston and just recently moved my guys onto a sand lot (not out of choice, but we moved property) and within a month my big guy had diarrhea. Now I feed him a week of "Sand Aid" each month and that seems to make a difference.

Interesting in the photo that his hooves don't look too bad.

It would seem a shame to take him and have him PTS. Could you take him even for a while? I would be happy to send a contribution towards you getting him......... and I'm sure others on here would too.

Katie66, I am friends with the OP and we think we may have a home for him. We are just trying to gather up the money right now. I have offered to pick him up and get him out of that hell hole he is living in and take him to a safe place. We hope to have him soon!

I wouldn't write him off as a killer!! I've seen worse recover with care, TLC and food!! Looks more like a TB/QH lacking 200 pounds to me. Wish I was closer. I'd own him!! I BOUGHT an expensive TB show horse/foxhunter who looked almost that bad and he is now 6 months later is FAT, slick, shiney and GRATEFUL!!!! Someone needs to get that horse!!

No, I sure didn't WANT to have him PTS but unfortunately I couldn't take him with no Coggins/vaccinations (barn won't allow) and couldn't afford his feed/care and I really didn't think we would stand a chance at finding him a home in time. But thanks to the miracle of internet networking it looks like we have (a couple home offers in fact!) It's been amazing to see so many people offer help (even had a couple people in other states offer to take him!). I'm very excited and relieved but won't sleep sound until he's safe in his new home :-)

because it would be kinder than starving.

OP, good luck with this guy.

I teach school with his new person, so I will be more than happy to provide updates on him on her behalf as she is not a forum member. We will also be creating him a FB page so everyone can follow him. His new person is on FB as well.

Believe me I will be asking her on a daily basis how he is doing as well as helping her out with getting him the proper vet care and meeting all of his needs.

Just wanted to update that "Mo" the Junkyard Lawnmower Horse arrived at his new home today!! We almost couldn't pick him up because of horrendous storms that included a tornado touching down VERY close to where he was, but luckily the skies cleared in time. Loaded like a pro, met his new buddy and they got along great :-) Looks like he is going to be a wonderful horse and I'm so thrilled with this happy ending. Long road to getting him back to health but he's out of that horrible place and on his way! We set up a FB page for him with photos that will be updated to document his progress. You can add him as a friend here!! http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100003807538066Thank you everybody for your good vibes!!
