Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • Anyone remember Rudy Rabbit from last year? Another COTHer found his for sale ad. Great price for a handsome horse who has already been let down with a year of retraining! Here's the thread she started and the link to his CL ad:

    http://www.chronofhorse.com/forum/sh...at-some-Cuties!!

    http://rochester.craigslist.org/grd/3422870454.html

The two intact boys have the cutest "take me home" faces, especially Mr. Magneta. I hope someone gives them well deserved homes and brain surgeries. For anyone who is interested in Mr. M, his trainer posted a picture on the FLF Facebook page and he doesn't look butt high like he appears in his listing. They're both cuties!

I'm still pining over Relatively Ready. Sadly, I don't think it's going to happen this year. So bump for him and a reminder that there are 2 pages of Finests so make sure to look at them all when you're making your selections!

Because the trainers' daughter loves him so much and has made him her special pet, the price is pretty firm.
It was funny -- when taking his listing, I asked the price and she said "Five." I said, with an incredulous tone, "Do you mean five hundred?" (Remember, we had been hearing 500 all morning!) If she had said yes, I was going to run to the nearest ATM! When she said "No, five thousand," I thought that's more like it for a horse of this quality, looks, and movement. For someone looking for a forever superstar and not a resale project, that is truly a fair price for this horse in my opinion.
      Hey Colleen,

While I think he is cute I am more curious about his record and the succesive breaks. Did the listers comment on that or at least explain why he was off for 10 months right after a win, then ran 3 times poorly, and seemingly kept the option open to run him again by still being on the backside and are now finally listing him 7 months after his last race, but yet he's still galloping?

You know me, I am not trying to be a negative nancy, but I would advise anyone to take a very good vet with them to seriously check over this guy. It could be they just took him home for a bit, but then why is he back on the backside now and galloping? It just doesn't add up. Did they say anything??

        • I don't think there's anything to put off a potential buyer. The horse is the trainer's daughter's pet and she has done all kinds of activities. He had time at Penn ponying horses and the reference to galloping was not specific to timeframe, only a commentary on his versatility and range of experience. The daughter has done everything with him, including started him over cross rails and doing western showmanship with him. This is likely related to his time off, but it's best to ask these questions of the owner/trainer.

          • Just to be clear I am not saying people should avoid or not consider this horse. But I would do a foundationmare suggests and ask a lot of questions. And then I would get a trust worthy vet's opinion.

That price is huge but honestly there are people that will plunk it down if they want the horse bad enough. Now since I have spent the better part of the last 24 hours looking at OTTB sale ads all over the us, I would HIGHLY suggest against spending that much given whats on the market now, but hey, to each their own.

Hahaha!!! I would have done the same thing, even if I had had to stick him in my living room until I found space for him at the barn...

OMG -- Rudy Rabbit now available and for only $1000 -- less than his listing price last year! Somebody run and get him and turn him into the stunning show hunter or dressage horse he was meant to be, and save him from the fate of too many on Craig's List!!!

Come on Emily -- do you really think that while taking photographs of a dozen or more horses on a cold morning while also showing three groups of buyers around we have time to check into a horse's race record and start asking all sorts of questions about time off and gaps? Get real -- it is enough of a crazy juggling act just taking notes, photos and trying to switch between still photo and video function for one horse while other trainers are calling to you to come over to their barn! And even if we did have the time to call up equibase while taking notes and photos simultaneously, what would someone really say when we asked why several months off? We would have no way of verifying.
All we can say is what the daughter told us -- she fell in love with the horse and wanted him for her own project, and she has been playing with various things with him, but parental pressure to consider selling him has led her reluctantly to list him. Parents need her working in their barn, not playing with pets. No indication whatsoever that he is back in race training -- not sure where you got that impression from. That was not what the "daughter has galloped him" reference meant, as foundationmare has indicated. The daughter clearly does not want to part with him, so she put a high price tag-- she certainly does not want to deal with tire kickers or people who call and ask if he is free. People bring horses from a farm back to the track to list them not because they are putting them back in race training, but because they know both the listers and prospective buyers are at the track, and can rarely arrange to run all over to go to farms. Nothing suspicious about this at all.
We always recommend a PPE, for any horse, free or expensive.

I think they're ready to accept offers. He's on both boards so check him out and give her a call. He's a good citizen and deserves a great home.

Ditto -- and also pushing this lovely horse! I spoke with Krystal yesterday morning, and she cares so much about making sure this horse gets a good home that she bought him herself from the trainer. But she really cannot keep him over the winter and emphasized that he really needs to find a home. And she reiterated that he is a complete sweetheart, a lovely mover, sound, and beautiful. He is indeed all that in my opinion. When I have watched him jog I have seen a sound and very nice show hunter type mover. I have also seen a quiet horse who has not been bothered by commotion around him -- including on one day a horse that got loose and ran around. Mt Karakorum just watched, and then let Krystal lead him over to help catch the loose horse.
As for price flexibility, Krystal told me she just wants to get back what she paid for him, which is $1,000. He is a real bargain at that price folks -- so begging someone to step up for a really seriously nice gorgeous grey horse who could do great in dressage, in show hunters, and many other disciplines including trail riding pleasure.

More new homes, and nice updates!

Several more Finests have found new homes! Yulan was picked up yesterday, and arrived safely at her new home, where another Finest already enjoys life.
Street Cruise has been purchased to go become an eventer -- we expect he will be a superstar!
With Options found his forever person as we were in the process of taking his photos for listing, so he went right to the "Placed" list; he will ship soon to his new home.
Wayside Park also found a home, as did "Winky" -- that cute little one eyed filly named Short Term Vision.
New York Wine also found a home -- leaving several disappointed suitors who were hoping to get her first.
And we have received some lovely messages from some very happy new owners of Finests! Neverabettercity (now known as Pigpen because of his love of mud puddles!) and Run Mikey Run are enjoying each others' company and happily adjusting to turn out.
King Kong Kingdoms, known as Kong, is such a hit with everyone at his new barn that he is called the barn superstar!
Walkin Boss has converted a previous warmblood person into a confirmed TB fan!
You're Ready Now is doing great and making his person very happy as well.
The very aptly named Pretty Victory is also settling in well and starting ground work.
And Tanzillion, now known as Tanner, is taking to jumping quite well!
And as for my own newest Finest, the lovely Truffula, she is enjoying going barefoot, getting muddy, and has setteld in well into the mare group in turnout. She is quickly losing the snappishness she showed on the track, and nickers when she sees me, and comes right up to me in the paddock. She will get shoes back on in two weeks, and then we will start ground work and hope to be riding her before Christmas!
We just love getting updates on the horses we have listed and helped place, so keep those FInest updates coming!
I am showing three groups of shoppers around tomorrow, so hoping to have more good new home news very soon.

Volos is kind, classy and should be a great addition to our family. He will spend the winter off regrouping his ankles and then we will go from there.
