Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

  • I might believe WD was just having us all on, except for the fact that all of her postings exude the same snooty, self entitled attitude. Everything she writes comes across as if she's holding her nose in the air at all the 'little people'.

WD, I was kinda-sorta understanding where you were coming from before, but not now. You're smack dab in, 'I'm a pretty pretty princess, speshul snowflake land' now with that last post.

I was taught my horsemanship by English Pleasure/Saddleseat show trainers. I can't even trail ride without having bathed and clipped my horses beforehand, but that's MY issue, not anyone else's.

My Ayrab gelding has black tack, but I use a RED saddle pad and ear bonnet on him, and wear a matching shirt. I think we look rather adorable.
Homeopathy claims water can cure you since it once held medicine. That's like saying you can get sustenance from an empty plate because it once held food.

      • I don't know, Aven, I just never took it negatively because it didn't seem mean or malicious, just a way of letting me know that things were done differently in hunter princess land.

Shrug. I agree with you though, now that you've said it. It just didn't feel that way at the time.

Goody Two, totally not picking on you, but since we've been talking about Chocomare's school of etiquette (TM), the fact that your sentence starts the same and ends so differently cracks me up.

I'd love to be as kind as Choco. She's impressive. Yet I find myself nodding more at your post. I've been shaken out with the chaff.

ETA...YOU changed it! I swear what I quoted and bolded wasn't what was there when I started my post. Probably for the best. I'd like to take this opportunity to pretend that is what I knew was written to make myself look like a bigger hearted person.

          • Yes, I am a mature and responsible person that will be your doctor in a few years. I spend hours training my search and rescue dog, while still training my horses and I have received the highest of academic honors at my college.

However, I grew up in a world of nothing but class. I went to a prep school, I associated with the children of corporate giants, and I grew up in a million dollar home. Yes, I stand to inherit a large estate and I wouldn't really have to work if I didn't want to. I plan on being a doctor in a rural community because I love it and I love the people. Most people wouldn't guess that I went to an expensive prep school and was expected to attend an Ivy League university.

              • This thread makes me so happy about our good group that we have at my barn. We're all between 16-30, enjoy each other's company and help each other out. Are there things some boarders do that make me sigh? Sure.

One girl doesn't know much about saddle fit and thinks western saddles are pretty universal. She has a small western saddle and a young horse with very broad shoulders who has been bucking under saddle. She asked me to take a look at the fit of her current saddle and it was TIGHT and pushing down on the tops of the scapula. I told her, if it were me, I wouldn't ride in that saddle and that it has to hurt the horse. She said that she was going to try a thicker pad and I told her that it would probably compound the problem. I gave her the example of thicker socks to make tight shoes fit. It just doesn't work. Then, I offered her the use of my old western saddle with very wide full QH bars. It fits my draft cross mare and I'm sure it would fit her mare. She said "Oh, well, I've already got this one on and ready to go. We'll try that next time though! Thanks." All I could say was "OK, good luck." She came back from that ride with a swollen, bloody lip where she did a face plant into the horse's skull as she reared. Guess what - She learned, she's now riding in my saddle which fits her mare while she shops for something more appropriate. I didn't say I told you so. It was her choice to do what she did. I could only be there to offer my solicited advice and offer an alternative if I could.

There's a younger girl who's parents got duped when they bought her her first horse. He's a saint of a gelding but they were told he was 13 but I swear he's more like 25-28. He looks cushingoid and he has severe DSLD in his hind legs. Poor guy is lame and miserable. The vet finally said something at springtime shots saying that he will be crippled if he continues to be ridden heavily. She didn't say to stop riding all together, but she needed to slow it down for his sake. The girl is devistated and I told her that if she wanted to still get some more time in the saddle, she was more than welcome to ride my mare and I told her parents that if/when they're ready to look for another horse, I'd be happy to help them in their hunt. Fingers crossed she can get two more seasons of light riding out of him before she goes to college but that's up in the air. If it were me, I wouldn't ride him at all, but it's not my call and not my place to say anything. They're working with the vet and the little girl loves him so, that is more than a lot of horses in his place get so all is ok with me.

Sometimes you just need to look at things from a different perspective. The horse she chose is one that didn't have great rehoming prospects in this economy. So, for now, he has a home and he's making someone's dream come true and that is a nice place for him to be in right now. The fact that the new owner is overhorsed presents a problem, but only if things don't work out. Things may work out and this mustang becomes the owner's *heart* horse and they live happily ever after. My first horse was that for me and I know a lot of people's first horses have a special place in their hearts. If things don't work out, then his marketability hasn't really been impacted much. He's not a marketable horse today and he won't be then. Stinks for the pony, but it is what it is. I wish they all could be happy endings though. So, no harm, no foul I say.

I'm inheriting a Very Large Estate (and multimillion dollar corporation too!), don't have to work after the inheritance, and associated with all the rich kids...I'm sooo much less of an asshole than you are.

My (gelding) pony wears a neon pink blanket, is ridden in a $100 wintec saddle with BROWN leathers and has a frankenbridle.

Are we supposed to feel blessed that you will be a country doctor even though you don't have to work?

The barn I grew up riding in had all matching tack. Leather halters with name plates were the only halters allowed. All blankets and sheets were custom made in barn colors. Every horse had the same bridle with their name plate on it. All polo wraps and saddle pads were in barn colors. We were expected to ride in black jodphurs, black boots and a collared shirt every time we rode. I like this world because it sends a message of professionalism. Tacky neon tack does not send a message of professionalism or class.
My dear, you are a Snob. Yes, with a capital "S." Where I come from the people with the "real" Old Money would rather DIE than make a statement like you just did. Which tells me quite a lot. How lovely for YOU if someone in your family made some money; if you think that elevated you in "social class" you've got another think coming. In the annals of the world I've never heard anything more "LMC" in my LIFE! (If you want to know what "LMC" means, call up one of your prep-school friends, because I guarantee they were calling YOU that behind your back.

You BETTER have lots of money, because you sure aren't going to make FRIENDS with your attitude. For the record, the genuine article don't give a rat's about your portfolio, and would never think of asking. And BTW, you sure as shootin' wouldn't be MY doctor if I'd just been gut-shot in the Allagash!

                          • Leaving aside the OP, I have a serious question here.

Are there any places that sell English-style giraffe print browbands or reins? I have been searching for months and all I can find are full-out Western bridles and split reins.

I haven't horrified anyone in a while. It's probably time.

(Yes, I know it's tacky to hijack a thread. But since everything about this thread is tacky, I'm going to do it anyway.)
