Forum rules and no-advertising policy
As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.
Board Rules
1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.
This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.
Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.
Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.
2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.
3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.
4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.
Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.
Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.
Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:
Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.
Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.
Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.
Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.
Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.
Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.
Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.
5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.
6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.
If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.
Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.
7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.
8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

So who else saw this video on FB today about horse loading/abuse?

What I would love to see..if we must smear videos of people doing things poorly across the web..is videos of these people with problem loaders DRIVING them.
There we may find answers to why even horses who generally load without issues give their human 'the hoof' and refuse to get back on.
Lads usually gets excited to go for 'car rides', we had an instance once where person in front stopped short, and there was no clear lane for me to get over into so I had to hit the brakes hard, going "I'm sorry Laddie I'm sorry Laddie I'm sorry Laddie I'm sorry Laddie YOU FREAKING A-HOLE!!" the whole way.
Next three trips....you guessed it, he was none too keen on getting back in the trailer.
As for the 'pet psychic' in this instance, (I won't completely knock the 'field', I've met people who were intuitive enough and 'got' animals in ways that bordered on entering into the paranormal realm..) if they're given the chance to 'reveal all' I wonder if it will have something to do with a traumatic experience of the horse watching it's dam be hauled away and never come back...or being ripped away from her...and sire was never around.
Because all issues stem from parents, right?
As for 'excusing' her behavior..I don't remember reading anything EXCUSING it, a lot of agreeing it was wrong, and very very very poor horsemanship..anti horsemanship even...but that it didn't fit the 'abuse' label. But I could have missed something.Owned by a Paint/TB and an OTTB.

I looked at the blog, too, and it was illuminating. And entire post devoted to a 15 - point dissection of an unpleasant comment? Such a fine line between articulate defense and pompous windbaggery. (Or not.Originally posted by goneriding24 View PostThat's funny, I don't care who you are.
So, to recap, we probably have someone just hoping to find someone doing something to a horse, while at a show. Then a video shows up and people are outrageously outraged about the 'abuse' (oh, please) but it gets the video-er lots of looks/clicks for her blog. (Yes, I looked too) Then the contacting of 'the authorities' to make the video-er look like a savior of said horse, however never making a move to help the horse because she was afraid of all the mellow people standing around actually trying to help the horse load. (Check said video)
Now, we have a pet psychic show up (weird name and all, in my opinion) and there will have to be lots of counseling for said horse, at great expense to the trainer. (I can tell the horse exactly what he is, for free) Oh, and for good measure, everyone should contact the Animal Department of Whatever County and make a complaint and then head on over to the MF Fair People (not what you think, I can't think of the Fair's name) and they seem to have wussed out pretty spectacularly and didn't want to hurt anyone's widdle feelings.
That about it??
)
Anyway, completely agree with the 15 min of fame assessment someone posted earlier. This person reeeeeaaly likes to hear herself talk.
Apparently this is the new face of activism in the technological age. Trial by Internet mob jury. It's like those useless petitions that go around. Everyone gets to pile on and feel like they've made a difference - without actually DOING anything or putting themselves out in any way.
In this case we have the added bonus of potential stalking, harassment, and complete disruption of this trainer's business and personal life - all for a three minute video clip.
I hope all of you who are okay with this kind of Internet vigilante justice are okay with it coming back to you. Or your trainer. Or your facility. It's easy to say, "Well I wouldn't abuse a horse, so I have nothing to worry about." But seriously, would you want to undergo a mob trial for your worst three minutes of horsemanship? Hah. Most of us won't even post video of our BEST rides.
This trainer could very well be an abusive jerk... or not. Three minutes of video where she whacks a horse with a whiffle bat until he jumps in the trailer are not enough for me to convict her of abuse.

Good point - and then there is the whole front-facing vs rear-facing issue. Quite a lot of research has been done on the stresses of travelling horses, using heart rate monitors and cortisol assays. The amazing thing, to me, is how some horses can survive an accident in a trailer - which one would think would be pretty traumatic! - with just a few scrapes, and yet load without difficulty the next time. I can't believe it's down to proper training. Rather, it's as if they fail to connect in their mind the process of entering the trailer with what happens inside once loaded.Originally posted by EquineImagined View PostWhat I would love to see..if we must smear videos of people doing things poorly across the web..is videos of these people with problem loaders DRIVING them.

No joke!Originally posted by EquineImagined View PostWhat I would love to see..if we must smear videos of people doing things poorly across the web..is videos of these people with problem loaders DRIVING them.
I had a horse who really loaded pretty well until our regular hauler at the time had a prior engagement and recommended one of his friends. That man's driving
We'd warn him way ahead of time that a turn was coming up, but he'd still slam on the brakes at what seemed like the last possible second. It was awful. Took ages to re-teach that poor horse to load again after that.
I don't take my horses off farm all that often, really, but it's so worth having my own rig to not have to go through that again.
And I love my trailer. I bought it when I was showing my Belgian Draft horse, so it's huge and tall and airy, and most horses walk right in like it's just a big stall above the ground.
I don't think it's a factor in this particular instance, but I also think that some horses are "problem loaders" because people are trying to stuff them into trailers they don't fit in.
And the waffle bat made me LOL

Hi Guys, just for an update on what's really going on. Alphabae (Erica) had the video played on the Channel3000 news last night, complete with an interview of Erica at her home farm.
http://www.channel3000.com/news/Hors...z/-/index.html
Things are getting out of control. While Erica is no longer actively harassing the trainer, she's set the stage for the 'public' to do the work for her. The trainer is being horribly harassed and has received threats to her safety. She has a mare that is about to foal out at a barn nearby who she cannot visit because she is scared of the people who have congregated there to intimidate and harass her. Her reputation and her business are ruined. I understand that some of you may say that she has brought this upon herself, but she is a good horse person and a very giving, honest, and hardworking person in general. Some time ago she lent me her truck and trailer without ever having met me before, because I needed to get a horse out of a bad situation quickly. A few days ago she made a mistake in judgement, and willingly admits it and is embarassed for it... but she absolutely does not deserve the wrath of what this woman Erica has unleashed against her.
The treatment she is receiving is undeserved and should not be tolerated. I personally have contacted the news station to explain the harm that their media is causing in this case, and if this continues to escalate, I plan to contact the police, to re-iterate my concern for her personal safety. While I don't particularly love getting involved in these types of situations and am not closely involved with this trainer, I feel as though allowing this persecution to continue sets a precedent- If Erica can get away with destroying this trainer's livelihood and sense of safety in her community, who is she going to target next in her search for attention and admiration?

I am glad she has acknowledged it was a mistake. Other trainers (I won't name names) haven't been so forthright about their mistakes.Originally posted by JSjumper View PostA few days ago she made a mistake in judgement, and willingly admits it and is embarassed for it...
Absolutely not.but she absolutely does not deserve the wrath of what this woman Erica has unleashed against her.
Things have gone too far, I agree. It has also become clear that Alphabae's motives are questionable.

Yes! If this is not a personal vendetta against this trainer then it clearly Alpahbae's selfish desire to become the person of the moment while not caring who she has to ruin on her way to the top.Originally posted by fburton View PostAbsolutely not.

Well if she wasn't waling on her horse to load her into the trailer -wiffle bat or not - she wouldn't be the target of this either so I'd say she has a bit of skin in the game to right? Just like I would have thought better of her at the show if she'd realized she was losing it, and stepped back for a breath, she could have done a nice public mea culpa.
The little news interview apparently attempted to contact her to no avail. If she'd taken the opportunity to have her say and just said, "Yeah, that was bad. I lost it a bit. Let's be realistic; who hasn't just gotten really really angry like that, but what I should have done was walk away. Let me just say thought that what's not fair is that my contact information is being used to harass me for a mistake I made." or something to that effect she'd have made points.
Just the other day on NPR someone was interviewing a crisis consultant and the consultant said that the most critical and most difficult step is facing the truth and reality of your screw up, but that it is necessary in order to move on.
What she did was wrong. You call yourself a trainer then you should have certain qualities. You don't need to be perfect, but you do need to be smarter than that.
And this has nothing to do with her being a good person or a bad person. The judgement is not on her, but on her action. Her action was bad. Look, the only place people exist as either pure good or pure evil is in fictionland. So while her personality my be akin to godly, I wouldn't leave her my horse to train because her behavior seems to say she lacks a certain insight I would desire in an animal trainer.
JMO of course.
PaulaHe is total garbage! Quick! Hide him on my trailer (Petstorejunkie).
