Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

    • OK ok, here I am, with pictures of all your mugs I didn't get home until after 11 PM last night. Thank God for ONCE in my life I refrained from drinking as much as I usually do, I may have told you guys some silly stories.. Plus...I was actually was pulled over on my way home, only 10 minutes from my house Luckily, it was only for a tail light out, and the nice officer let me go with a fix it ticket. Of course I was up at 6 am this morning to drive to the barn and medicate the Vegas, and here I just got home from my third visit to the barn today.

I don't even know where to start with the thank yous. OK, I do. RugBug, thank you SO MUCH for trekking all the way to the Bay Area to meet all us funny looking horse peeps And thank you so much for the kind gifts. Vegas LOVES the treats and says thank you as well.

Whisper, we have never really talked much, yet you were so kind to bring Vegas that wonderful card. I was deeply touched by your thoughtfulness.

Pocket Pony, Wanderlust and Gunnar are 3 of my favorite people already. It was as always such a treat to see you 3, all that was missing were your 3 wonderful and fun SOs.

Sandy, thanks for driving down with me. I had so much fun hearing all your stories about the Bay Area in years past, and some of it's more infamous charactors. You are as interesting and intellegent person in real life as your online persona.

To the rest of you, it was such a pleasure to meet each and every one of you, I could go on and on. I hope we can do it again sometime very, very soon!

      Oh, and Here's the PICS!

Yeah, you and me both. In real life, I don't have a creepy looking crazy eye. I swear.

            • Ok, can I just say how much fun I had with you ladies? (As evidenced by the pics, where I am grinning like an idiot in every single one...and now I can testify that no, wanderlust does NOT have a creepy crazy eye!)

I will have to give a shout-out by name later this week, as I am falling over in my chair from exhaustion right now...but I would jump at the chance to meet up again, and might even consider hosting a small something in the future?

Also, since my mare is leased out right now, I make a great cheerleader at shows! Let us know when there are shows coming up, so those of us who aren't showing can come cheer you on...

Have a great week, y'all, and hope to see you again soon!

              • PerfectP ... thanks for taking the photos, they're GREAT! I mean, great to HAVE *laffin* ... I can't figure out how you had time to get them done in between outrageous stories. *I* will never think of Irish grooms nor box stalls the same way.

It really was a wonderful time ... I did stop by the manager and tell him what good service we got and yes ... *my* dinner order (selected on the advice of the waiter) was mostly right. Deepest thanks go to Sirius, Shilo, and my personal saviour Grasshopper, with able assistance from IBetty for all the work they did organizing the events ... and getting the bill paid!!

Seriously, I look forward to another get together ... I like the idea of hosting something, Grassy. I was thinking the same thing on the way home, how nice it would be if we could mix and mingle a bit more. My clubhouse and pool *ahem*! are certainly available for a hot summer afternoon if you want to collaborate, tho that doesn't get us any farther north-east.

And yes, Space ... I'll even come pick you up

Speaking of norther-east, I'll be at Rancho Murieta in April for the CDI, if anyone up there wants to get together?

OH! OH! ... and for all of you trembling with me in trepidation re: the sale ... I made this *ahem* fantastic first impression by yelling at the people for driving too fast in the barn area!

After that, though, it went well ... the agent was very kind and encouraging about my nervousness and the pony was such a GOOD guy, he pretty much presented himself He walked on tarp, opened and closed the arena gate (TWICE) ... well, let ME do it, I mean ... showed three loffley gaits and good beginning lateral work. Nothing at all to not like.

Plus I got interest from someone closer whose trainer I *LOFF*.

And Gunnar ... Jen remembers you and says "hi" back ... she MISSES riding. It was so fun to see your fancy pics and talk w/you and Cindeye about hunters!

Cindeye ... one of the funniest women on earth ... Smithson, one of the most courageous! It was worth the 2-year wait! Name-by-name shoutots are tough, but so many people were just the kind I'd look at and say "wow, bet she's a cool woman!" ... great to have it confirmed!

Perfect Pony thanks for the shots but you could conventiently lose the one of me looking a trifle like Dean Martin.

Oh, but I do...there's just no photographic evidence because I arrived after the camera was put away. (hehe...it shows up when I've been drinking or when I'm tired...a three hour drive and a humongous (good god those things were huge) margarita is just about enough to bring out the creepy. )

I have to say, I had a wonderful time. It was a crazy day (who in the world decides to adopt a dog on a day they're suppose to go out of town? ) but was sooo much fun. I didn't get to talk to everyone due to my tardiness, but those of you I did get to talk to were a blast (as I'm sure everyone else was as well.) Pictures abounded (Gunnar and Wanderlust...can I ride like you two? ) Getting to see pictures of the wonderful Erik...his appy self is just too cute. Definitely worth the trip.

Not only did I get to meet some wonderful COTH'ers...but I got de-grinched! Thank-you so much Perfect Pony. That little bag was chock full of goodies. I kept pulling more and more out. My new mantra is 'quiet mind, quiet horse.' If I say it enough, do you think it will stick? And believe me, that keychain will be put to good use.

                      Ah, good times.

Perfect Pony: you must've been paying my karma back. I drove up there so fast, saw 8 cops (one who did a u-turn to come back my direction ) and didn't get pulled over.

                          • I agree we need to have the next get together in a Residential way. My house is old and decrepit but large and not in danger of any great damage from over enthusiastic COTHERS. That way we could see videos instead of pictures. GM on Bodie is enough to pay admission for, especially when he does the Passage and Piaffe demonstration. Oh how fun it would be to see everyone in real time action.

To all of you who complimented me and my boys thanks. We are all blushing and feel very humble. If you saw videos you may change your tune. Rugbug the last time I showed (before Big Bodie got hurt, so 2003) I took a header in between a 21 foot 1 stride that Bodie seemed to think I needed to see without him. So I think you can follow Wanderlust's lead instead. You and Show will be great.

Oh I could ramble on and am so.....

eh, Gunnar...that happens to us all. The last time I showed I ended up falling off after collecting my ribbon. Show didn't appreciate it blowing in the breeze. Just a few classes later I ended up on my hinter regions when he spooked at a dressage letter. At least Bodie had to eject you and didn't just step out from under you.

                                • Rug Bug Bodie is not fond of ribbons and is capable of just about anything. Also the Dressage letters. Yes I know about that one. Ridng along doing my dumb NORCAL Eq. test and Bodie keeps squirrling around looking down at those white letters. How many times has he seen theose white letters? You and Show have an excuse at least. Bodie has been there done that by now so his excuses get old. From our conversations Bodie and Show were born under the same moon. Just to make you feel better Bodie has gotten better (not quite as spooky at least) in the 5 years I have owned him so there is hope for Show. I have learned to expect the worst and am pleasantly suprised when I get the best.

                                      • Gunnar, speaking of pictures and looking alert, Gunnar (the horse) didn't look sour jumping, but rather "Ho, hum, I can jump this fence in my sleep." The painted-in ears picture was toooooo funny!

PerfectPony, thank you for the pictures (no complaints about mine), and I'm so glad you liked the card! I really hope that Mr. Vegas is back to his usual self soon. Sorry that we didn't get to talk more, but you were so popular that you were surrounded by other people you were to, and I couldn't get close enough to hear you until the end of the evening.

PocketPony, it was great seeing you again! I'm glad everything is going well with the beasties and the new location.

Smithson, you're an inspiration, between making it there so soon after the pacemaker operation, and the encouragement and advise you gave me for getting as far as I can in Dressage. I'll be thinking of you the next time I give blood.

AWG, it was great to finally get to meet you, and I was impressed that you recognized me from the pictures I posted way back when. I'd love to meet up again one of these times. My lesson on Sunday was with Rebecca, who I *think* is the first instructor you asked me about. I'll check up on your suggestion next time. By the way, I had a *great* lesson! I took Smithson's advice about feeling like putting my weight into my ankles rather than pulling my heels down, and it seemed to make a huge difference. Switching into the forward seat and 2-point positions are becoming easier to start and maintain.

I'm running out of time, but Cindeye, IdahoBetty, Grasshopper, Spacely, and Shilo, it was wonderful getting to talk with you!
