Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

I'm here, I'm here! Have been battling a cold for the last week, and also spent a few days in SoCal with the spouse to start looking for prospective cities in which to live...

But I am still planning for the 2 pm WMH extravaganza as well as Chevy's !

    Comment

    • there IS no Sacramento-side of SF! But definitely we can make the next venue farther east ... might have to go pretty FAR east to outrun the Chevy's law

      • Are we going to do nametags or something in order to be able to call each other something other than hey you (BB name AND real name)?

I can take care of that if need be...

        • I think Cindi has the nametags taken care of.

For those meeting at WMH @ 2, I will be driving an extremely bright yellow GMC stepside pick-up, so everyone can use my truck as a beacon! I will also bring my digital camera so we can have photographic evidence of the complete debauchery and mayhem!

            • Sigh... well, I won't be coming.
My Biochemisty midterm is Monday, and I have to know the structures, enzymes, control points and regulation of Glycolysis, the TCA cycle and various other metabolic pathways by heart for the exam. And, as of now- I can't get them. So, I'm going to go ride tomorrow morning, then get to work.

              Perhaps next time.

Where are you all and what trouble have you gotten into ?

I expect we'll be getting a "late" report with photos in the morning, or will it be the afternoon?

A great time was had by all!

We started out the day REALLY late because I was the late, great, Cindeye! Cindeye, Gunnar, LM Smithson, Sirius B & Friend (a horsewoman, too) and Idaho Betty met at the YELLOW BEACON truck in the WMH parking lot. We took the behind-the-scenes tour first, with the stables. The Winchester Mystery House was a hoot and a half. The tour guides have to memorize their routines word-for-word complete with terrible jokes so that everyone has exactly the same tour. Next, it was the tour of the house. Really funny...what seemed like millions of little tiny rooms slapped together with no rhyme or reason. Apparently, Old Lady Winchester held a seance every night and came out to tell the foreman what they would be building the next day. She was a few sandwiches short of a picnic, if you know what I mean! Incredible collection of Tiffany windows was the highlight of the tour for me.

Then it was on to Chevy's. We dodged traffic across the street...LM Smithson proved herself to be an expert! We met up with with the rest of the gang...already elbow-deep in HUGE silly drinks (think soup-bowl size) . Whisper wandered in soon after, and the star of the day was RUG BUG! What a trooper. She drove all the way up from San Luis Obispo to meet up with the COTH crew...complete with newly adopted doggie in the car

Pictures were shown all around. It was really fun getting to see everyone's horses and other dependents. The best part of the evening for me was sharing ideas, trainer suggestions and listening to all the discussions of different disciplines. At one point, I just sat back and tried to listen to three conversations at once. I'm not mentioning any names, but the frequent advice from one COTHer to another during a "what do I do about my boyfriend" discussion was, "Just find someone to kiss!" Advice I plan to take to heart and practice often Sadly, we wound up about 9:30 as most of us had to drive home. Noone pinched any waiters and, at last view, noone was passed out under the table. Darn, no blackmail pix.

AWG...fill the COTH crowd in with the details of the debauchery that happened before the WMH house team arrived.

AWG, you're a total supah-stah for taking the suggestion and getting us organized. Talk about herding cats! And Rug Bug, you are a total studette for making such an effort to join us.

Did anyone get their food order right?

I LOFF you guys. Now I'm feeling a little verklempt with nostalgia reliving last night

                  • Yes, it was so fun. Can I just tell you guys what a hoot Cindeye is in person? Totally awesome. I didn't get any photos of everyone at the restaurant because I didn't even think about it, but I got a couple pics of the crew at the WMH. Smithson was another trooper, as she just had a pacemaker installed on Monday and she went through the whole tour without taking a breather! The house tour itself was a little over a mile long, so it wasn't a little jaunt! AWG is also awesome, she had me laughing so hard! As did Perfect Pony, Wanderlust and Pocket Pony! Gunnar had awesome pics of herself jumping (she's also a total hoot!) and of course, SandyM always has funny stories to tell, as well as she had pics of her very cute Erik to inflict upon people.

I felt really sorry for our waitor though, poor guy had to wait on 15 loud, cackling women for several hours

I will have pics up soon and will post links.

It was great to meet everyone and I hope to meet up with all of you again!

Come play with my dogs anythime AWG! Cindeye, you're not the only one who's food got messed up, but it worked out fine in the end. All in all, I had a great time & look forward to doing it again in the future.

                          • Good morning all you Chevy's survivors. I myself had a ton of fun and was amazed at how we strangers all got along so well. Cindeye ( so good to meet you and I will be in touch) FYI Wanderlust, Pocket Pony, Grasshopper, Rugbug and I stayed until at least 10:30 so we strecthed it out. I am tired today as it is 50 minutes home and then I had to talk to Mr. Gunnar about all us crazy girls.

WMH was fascinating and Lsmithson led the way up the 1000 short stairs we hiked up and down. Lady Winchester was a crazy woman with too much $$$. Imagine what we could do with $1,000 a day in the late 1800s. Good golly.

What a small world it was, with several of us having mutual aquatainces.

                            AWG say hi to Jen.

Pocket Pony and I are acquainted and did not even know. Susan great to meet you after all.

Rugbug it was so great to meet you and for you to make that trek with Jaspar (sp?) to protect you. Good luck with him. Show is beatiful.

Sirius, the youngest looking COTHER (but wise in years), thanks for the photos. I think someone else took some at Chevy's so hopefully they can post.

Shiloh you have a great name. hahaha

Perfect Pony got a break from the Vegas and was demonstrating to all The Vegas way of moving.

IDahobetty glad to meet you before you go south. Good luck.

SandyM you and Eik are a pair. Gotta love an good Appy.

To all the rest of you (I am old and feeeble this Morning and skipping on names??) good to meet you guys and lets do it again.

As Cindeye said there were some thoughtful conversations going on. It was a grand affair and I am sure we made a spectacul (sp?) of ourselves judging by the stares of all the folks nearby. Angel the waiter was cute enough to nibble on but we were all good girls.

and I realized it was from all the smiling and laughing I did. It was totally great to meet everyone. SandyM and Gunnar - loved your pics. (Stephanie - I'm still laughing about the painted on ears!) Good conversation and a multitude of things to think about later.

Why don't we make plans now to meet at Horse Expo in June and maybe some of those who couldn't make it to this shindig can come there. Plus, we can meet some of our pals from that side of the world and corrupt them, too. *BEG* with evil laugh....

saturday (yesterday), my brother had to be admitted into the hospital because the abscess' (yes, plural) in his throat had grown over night to a point it was restricting his airway. even with meds, they had to perform immediate surgery that afternoon to ensure his throat wouldn't close.

i, of course wanted to be there for my brother, but more so with my mom because no other family members were able to stay with her at the hospital. i'm sooo bummed i couldnt' make the COTH dinner (so, so soooo!! much), but family comes first. i hope everyone had a blast and i can't wait to see pictures. maybe someone can photoshop my head into one of them

                                      • Wow, what a great group of women! And to think that some of us just about closed the restaurant down. I had such a great time meeting everyone that I was happy to stay so late (usually I'm an "anti-social" butterfly, and flit away early)!

I went to bed with a little bit of a tummy ache last night - I don't think I consumed quite enough stomach-coating food to protect it from the tequila, but oh-well (I guess three baskets of chips and salsa just wasn't enough). It tasted good at the time.

I am so glad wanderlust made it, and Perfect Pony, too, considering Vegas's trials and tribulations. (And Gunnar, I too enjoyed the visual demonstration of how the Vegas moves!)

Thanks to everyone who thought to bring pictures - shiloh, SandyM, RugBug, Smithson, Gunnar, wanderlust. I think that AWG brought pictures, too, but I didn't get to see them.

It is fun to put names with faces - I have seen Gunnar at many shows over the years, and never knew who she was. All this time, we could have been chatting! But I was always envious of her and her lovely horses and her great show experiences. What was I, a mere bystander and friend-supporter, to do...walk up to her and say "hi, wanna be my friend?" And we know a few of the same people, which is always fun.

Sirius, I forgot to ask if you had any pictures of your girls. Good luck to you on your future plans!

Smithson, you were a hoot and I'm glad we got to chat, have fun with your grandkids!

SandyM, I loved your pictures, and your horse is just adorable - that face!

shiloh, your stories were amazing, quite entertaining indeed. And it was nice to see the beautiful shiloh-the-horse in person. Or, rather, in pictures. So pretty.

AWG, we started a conversation but then had the table-moving-fiasco and we never got to finish, but it was fun while it lasted.

spacely, good luck with your coming foal! You must post pictures for all to see. It was fun to compare notes on some of the people we both know.

Whisper, it was nice to see you again! Good luck with your jumping lessons. Spring will be here soon enough and you'll get all the riding in you can and then some. I admire how hard you are working with school, a full-time job, keeping up with lessons. Man, girl, you are busy!

RugBug, Show and Jasper (is that his name?) are just too cute. You get a big gold star and princess crown for driving so far! I really enjoyed meeting you in person.

Grasshopper, finally a face to put with the name after our PTs last year! I'm so glad the mare is doing well. Good luck in school!

Cindeye, you were a hoot! Good luck on your horse shopping adventures and let us know how it turns out.

IdahoBetty, finally we meet, my long-lost secret santa! Small world, huh? Well, not so small I guess since we are both from around here, but how many people get to meet their secret santas in person!?

I know that Perfect Pony took some pictures of the gang at Chevy's, hopefully she'll post them. Of course, I DID bring my camera, but neglected to actually use it. Duh.
