Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

I don't know what I do different from anyone else, but honestly, I have never thrown out a blanket yet. I have one that I have had for the last - I kid you not - 25 years - it was a New Zealand rug - I'll check if it has a specific brand on it. I also have a Rhino and a Rambo and a Dover and none of them have been shredded. I've had to resew the strap onto one of them, and one of them has a small (2") rip on it now. Partly probably not getting the same level of use as I am in Texas so they are not wearing all winter.

I second that the Amigos don't hold up. I got three ($50/each) and all three are shredded. I've never had that happen before.

The sheets that have held up are Rambo and Riders International. I haven't tried Schneiders or Pessoa.

I've had a couple of boarders buy purple Rambo Wug turnouts and had them not be waterproof in the first few months of use.

Kate66 - mine are in some type of sheet/blanket pretty much 24/7 from October through March (they live outside with run in) so that's probably why! I use sheets the most (especially this year), so they get a LOT of wear time.

I can't find a RI sheet at Dover with a higher Denier than 600 - am I missing something?

I have had good luck with the Saxon's sheets. My gelding has rough playmates and it has held up well. Good prices, too.

The two I mentioned in my OP are Saxons, they are ripping after only 4-5 months. And it's not like they were the only things they wore in the past 4-5 months! They were the more expensive 1200D ones too.

Schneiders is backordered on a bunch of theirs, but I like them!

I won't buy anything made with less than 1680 denier.
I loff the Schneiders turnouts! They have a great sheet in 1680 for about $80. Comes with 2 yr guarantee also. It's the one with the comfort collar. It only comes in green/black or blue/black, but the fit is awesome!
Out of 24 horses, almost all of them wear one of Schneider's turnout styles.

                        My various blanket experiences

In their fifth year - Dover Northwind, Pessoa
Three years so far - Dover Supreme
Never again - Amigo, Weatherbeeta (more for non waterproof issues than ripping)

eta - I'm too cheap for Rambos, though I do have a friends cast off sheet because her boy got a new one and it's in good shape, it's at least six years old.

I took the opposite approach....we have two geldings, one of which loves to grab and pull on the other one's blankets. I got tired of rips and holes, and then buying new blankets, so I went on Ebay and bought a used industrial type sewing machine. It can go through any blanket material like nothing...so now the cycle is, put blanket on gelding #1, watch gelding #2 rip it, sew it up, put blanket back on....lather, rinse, repeat .
My sewing skills have improved greatly, too .

No one has mentioned Weatherbeetas yet? I've been very happy with mine, both the fit and the durability. I have a sheet that is on its third season and looks brand new (although, granted, my sheets don't get a ton of use) and a medium-weight that I've had for maybe 5 or 6 years that HAS seen a ton of use. It's faded but still waterproof and no rips.

I keep wanting to try Schneider's but their catalogs confuse me so much with all the different lines they offer.

Those are the ones I like - I think I'm going to get two of those at the end of the season.

I´ve got three Weatherbeetas winterblankets 220 and 400 gr.

The oldest is 6 yo and has been used pretty much every day for 6-8 hrs outings in all weathers during wintertime (okt-mar) and is only now beginning to "take in" water.

The trick I think is not to wash it too often and use special detergent that doesn´t make the blanket loose the waterproof.

I paid around USD250 incl detachable neck for the 400 gr. Less than USD50/year...

I have an Everest sheet that, no lie, is 14 years old. It goes on my VERY unforgiving pasture boarded appy mare. It was the first thing I bought for her with my own money. It was $99 and when I got it it was royal blue and hunter green. Now it's greenish/tanish and purplish/brownish. It has one 1/2" tear in the shoulder and there is a hole in the liner from having to cut the surcingle out after washing it. Of course, they are no longer made , so it's the only one I have.

I agree, amigos are terrible. My mare destroyed her rambo sheet in two seasons. I have a Rider's sheet that I have had for 3 years that has held up, but I hate it -- it has an elasticized neck and is always falling off to one side. Next time I need a sheet, I'm going to look for a schnieder's!

We witnessed the other day one of the horses lifting another horse's turnout (the schneiders 1680 mentioned above) up, teeth clamped onto the outer lining. As offended horse moved off, we dreaded seeing the rip that would ensue as other horse held on. His teeth lost their hold on the turnout and snapped shut. There was not a rip, rend, nor mark indicating that a horse had just clamped on. He had previously torn up a 1200 denier turnout, but not this one.

Why don't they make more turnouts with 1680 denier? It seems to be a huge difference between 1200 and 1680. My horse wears the Rambo wug 1200 turnout, but I'd like to find a cheaper, tougher alternative whenever I have to replace it one day.

Never had any problems.....this winter and next I will be changing over to exclusively Smartpak

If you are willing to do some searching you can find discount Rambos on clearance this time of year. Ebay is another good source for awesome deals.

My horses only wear Rambos and I have never paid full price for one. I am the master of internet deals - even a used Rambo that is still going strong!

I'd rather spend the money on something of quality and have it last, than something cheap I have to replace in a year.
