Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

    I love you, Arcadia

However, I have a sneaking suspicion that one of the boarders who went with her is very good friends with the management at MM, and may have told them the horses are thiers.

They may not even know who Sheri Whittaker is. I don't know, my bone-tired body is thinking everyone is out to get me these days

But that is a FABULOUS idea, Arcadia. We want to get the word out. The truth, nothing more, nothing less.

I CAN'T believe she is telling people that it was the owner of the property. So, so unfair and untrue. Sunshine, have you told the owners that she has done that? I am sure they would be interested to hear.

So unfair, since they have been so incredibly gracious to us all.

    • Goodyfourshoes--I did the night shift at the barn and when I got home I called the owner. She was grateful for the 'heads up'. She wasn't surprised since Sheri is likely trying to save face. This pro checked with my girlfriend and got the truth!!!! His business partner also saw the article in The Record. So whois the liar ONE MORE TIME????

      • I;m no lawyer, but isnt saying something like "Person XXX went bankrupt and thats why I had to leave" called something like defammation of character ??? Against the person (the Booth's) whom you are making this statement against???

I would think so, anyways ... methinks that Ms Whitaker should keep these defammatory comments to herself ...

        • Oh, don't worry I am NOT handing this to the barn manager, it is going to the owner of the property because ultimately it is he that will lose out on money if something happens again.

I am soooo angry for all of you! I look at the four extremely aged horses at my barn and I want to cry. What if it was them? Their owners have trusted me to ensure they are well cared for and I could not in good faith look into their eyes and do to them what has been done to your horses.

          • And the best of it is, Sheri and her line in, Todd Hussey, showed up at the farm a week and a half before the midnight move, with a brand new Dogde Ram 1500 Hemi 4X4. And we can't pay our bills????? Sympathy zero.

            • How long has this Sherri Whittaker been in Canada? She sounds *very* familiar...someone did almost the exact same thing, complete with boyfriend and new truck, in South Texas about 10 years ago...

              • What a mess. I know that MM, from what I heard, was going to be houses soon(Shame, I really like the property!)

How can someone lie and not get caught in it? Would it be worth it for a bunch of you to go to MM and confront her? With the press there?

In any sense, I do hope the ppl at MM are aware of what she did, and I think sending them a copy of the article printed is very kind and considerate and you can just say 'we didn't want this to happen to you...."

                Good luck all!!!

                • I feel so bad for all those involved, I could not imagine anything like that happening to me or my friends.
To say this is a shock is a huge understatement. I know Sherri personally, I have yet to pick my jaw from the floor.
I cant believe someone would do something like that around here. I horse community seems so big but when you really think about it, its not.
I hope she gets what she deserves, the expression "tared and feathered" comes to mind!!
Good luck to those involved, thank goodness the owners of the property have been so nice about everything.

                      • Goody- Here is the Record article from today. It is a little more accurate, anyway...

Horse owners scrambling for shelter after stable shuts

                        CHERRI GREENO

                        CAMBRIDGE (Jul 9, 2003)

Several horse owners who say their animals were abandoned last week at a Cambridge stable are still desperately searching for a new home for their horses.

Twenty-four horses were boarded at the Maplewood Equine Centre on July 1 when owner Sheri Whittaker decided to close her business. She told horse owners they had five days to move their animals.

Boarders at the centre said Whittaker handed out only a few letters to those at the stable, telling them about the sudden closure. However, many of the boarders were away at the time and never notified.

"I was given nothing by Sheri and was told nothing," said 24-year-old Kelly Bernstein, whose pregnant horse, Favorita, has been at the stable since January.

"I came to the barn on July 1 to ride and other boarders who had been there earlier had told me."

But Whittaker said yesterday she had contacted all horse owners, either by letter or by phone, to tell them what was happening.

The reason for the sudden closure was financial.

Whittaker said that she and her husband had been negotiating loans to pay off their debts and monthly lease payments but they didn't come through, which resulted in her declaring bankruptcy.

Whittaker opened the business on Clyde Road in September 2001. Horse owners were charged $375 a month to board their animals at the stable. Pasture horses -- those who stay outside -- were charged $240.

Bernstein, who is from Kitchener, said she and other boarders understand Whittaker's financial situation, but can't forgive her for walking out on their horses.

"What we don't accept is the way she ran out on the animals without any notice," she said.

                        "I trusted her completely."

Kathleen Morley, 32, of Toronto, said she, too, thought highly of Whittaker until now.

Morley has paid to have her horse, Gaelic, at Maplewood since October. She went to Sault Ste. Marie on June 28 to visit her mother and was on her way to the July 1 fireworks when she received a call from a fellow boarder.

Morley said Whittaker had taken the book of emergency contact numbers with her, which included the number for her in Sault Ste. Marie. She said another boarder found that number in a garbage can and called her.

Morley didn't make it to the fireworks display and was forced to cut her trip short.

"I didn't know who was feeding my horse," she said. "Sheri herself should have called. I don't pay a fellow boarder to look after my horse. I paid Sheri."

Whittaker said she took the book of emergency contact numbers so she could call all the owners and inform them of the closure.

"I called everyone that hadn't been notified" by letter, Whittaker said. "I'm not a malicious person."

But Bernstein and Morley say they have never heard from Whittaker.

Morley still has not found a place that will board her two-year-old horse. Luckily, the owners of the property, who leased the land to Whittaker have stepped in and are allowing the horses to stay until Sept. 1.

There are 12 horses left at the stable and owners take turns caring for the animals.

Pretty accurate (though they could have left out my age - how is that relevant?!? )

We aren't as desperate as it appears, however. We have a few leads on stalls - we're just being very picky. We appreciate more leads though - we want the next place to be a little more long term.

                          Thanks for posting that.

Sheri never did call me...and I have a roomful of people who witnessed the phone call from the boarder. In fact, since it was my mom (who works for the SPCA, coincidentally) listed as the emergency contact, she spoke to the boarder first.

I have four phone numbers for Sheri to contact me at any time - and she has never called one of them.

Arcadia - good luck! She seems to be pleading that she was in the right, and that she is the victim here. Whatever.

We know exactly what happened, but people will believe what they want to believe.

The reporter actually called me back to confirm that I did not ever hear from Sheri, "because I just hung up the phone and Sheri says she called you". She is lying to the reporter, and I have a roomful of people (not to mention the other boarders) who will back me up on that.

Of course, she is desperately trying to save face at this point - and will say anything to do so. I think that's like closing the barn door after the horse has escaped

She REALLY could have killed my horse by not feeding her the ulcer medication prescribed for her. Not only did she withhold medication from my horse, we found another horse that didn't get his antibiotics. The vet had to come out again and give him IM penicillin. Now we know why!!!
