Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

  • I am very happy for you.

So close to my loss, I can't help but think my story was on your mind the whole time - kinda makes me feel good that (even thoough a different illness) maybe my loss heightened your awareness of how vulnerable they are.

If that's not the case, just let me think it, I need some good feel stuff these days.
I gotta do-over and am doin it my way!!!

    • I hardly know what to say other than "Phew!" This is a marvelous turn-around and in a wow inducing hurry. Because of all the antibiotics, will he need an infusion of good bacteria to repopulate his gut?

Though you want Petey Puppy home as soon as it's safe, listen to the vets and don't push too hard. You still want to know what it is that hit him and where it may still lurk so proper precautions can be taken.
      Cheers, Maggi

Silly Mommy, I certainly have been thinking of Eric these last several days. The parallels were too close and lives are too frail. I am extremely thankful that Petey made it, and feel even more sorry for your loss, now that I know first hand the intensity of feelings involved.

Today Petey looked quite a bit worse, even though his labs are better. His gut is all tucked up and muscles are all tight and yet he has so much fluid in his stomach that it is swollen like a Budda-belly. He has lost a lot of weight so his flank is hollow; it makes his bulbous belly look even more out of place.

And, even worse, he would not eat a cookie.

I called the Intern who is responsible for him, over to his stall, since he was in the barn, and asked about the muscles and the fluid, but he didn't seem to be worried. I asked about the lack of appetite and tiredness, but that didn't seem to bother him either.

I don't know... Labs get better, but he looks worse. Sometimes a mother just knows when her boy feels punk. And today, Petey felt punk. But, tomorrow is another day.

I am glad he is still at R&R. If he was home and looked like this, I would freak and my wonderful vet would be ready to fire me as a client just to get away from all of my phone calls.

            • Pam, trying to put myself in your shoes, I can't even imagine how you must feel. I know I would be a total wreck, with Petey on his "roller coaster" ride. I really am praying for you guys. I wish I could be as level headed as you seem to be about this. I tend to lose my mind first, and ask questions later. JINGLES!

              • Based on a similar experience... it DOES take awhile for the bacteria to be totally kicked out of the system. As long as the labs continue the trend of progressing towards normal, that's good. He's in a good place right now and with how quickly things CAN go bad with this illness... he's better off staying there until he is truly stablizied.

Unfortunately it DOES take a lot out of the horse, weight wise... especially the young ones who are still growing. It's taken a good 2 years to get my friend's gelding looking REAL good weight wise. But it's such a fine balance with the diet while growing so much.

Best of luck! It sounds like he's well on his way to good health again though!

                • Pam - the other thing you need to remember, is depending on the type of antibiotic they have Petey on, they can make you feel like total crap. So he may be feeling under the weather simply because of the amount and strength of antibiotics in his system

The lab results dont lie - those are awfully promising and uplifting!

                  • Yes, the labs are so very important. I don't know if it was the same thing, but today I was told of a horse who had the same type treatment at R&R and was home in 5-6 days but it took months to get him really back again. Once he was home he was on his way back, but just progressive past the lousy and weight loss and strength. You know if you've felt lousy, you don't want to see your fave foods. He'll just be more of a puppy in your care when he's back home. I'm sending more prayers your way. It's so hard to see your babies hurting and you are extremely empathic as we all know and admire you for...

                    • Dear Lordhelpus-

I just found this thread because of another thread. I am so sorry you and your dear horse have had to deal with this. It sounds like he is on the road of recovery and thank God for both of you.

You have been so great about helping all of us with our horse problems. I have learned so much from your posts.

I truly think that good things will happen to good people. So you and Petey should be home free as you are a very good person!!!!

                      • Lord Helpus, here are some very quiet jingles for the Petester. <jingle> <jingle>.

My guy was in for 10 days I believe and he is much older (13). He has come back great though. Our Vet Hospital (Bonnie Brae in Tryon, NC) has a wall of pictures of the horses they have saved competing after their recovery. Seven months after the illness, Bob's picture is now on the wall. Ok, I needed the seven months, he was probably ready in two .

Just to warn you, for 5 days after he came home we were still on founder watch, checking for digital pulses 4 times a day. He actually had one once, called the vet on call and found out what to do. I was lucky that I had what I needed on hand. Ask them in advance what to be prepared for should that happen.

Quiet jingles again and hugs to you.

Well, Spot, wait no longer. The Petemeister is great. All systems are wonderful.

R&R's practice is to take fecal samples 4 days in a row for Samonella. The first sample is due back today. Obviously, that means the second one is due back tomorrow.

Dr. Bernard said that, depending on the setup in my barn, if I can keep Petey totally isolated until the 4th sample is back on Friday, then Petey can come home tomorrow.

But, for me, that's a big IF. To isolate him from my other horses until he is declared free of awful, terrible, horrendous, contageous disease... To make absolutely sure that George does not catch anything. That's a daunting proposition. I see the precautions I have to take at R&R just to walk into his stall to pat him, and it scares me to think that I could spread Samonella on my farm. So I will have a decision to make tomorrow.

I am going to talk to my vet and see what she advises. If I feel comfortable, I will go get him. Otherwise, he will have to stay until Friday when the 4th negative sample has come back.

I hate to leave him there for an extra two days after the Dr. has said he can come home, both for Petey's sake and the sake of my pocketbook. It's one expensive way to make sure he has clean sheets at night. But, the old saying "pennywise and pound foolish" comes to mind. New Bolton had to be closed down for 6 months due to a Samonella outbreak. The bacteria is almost impossible to get rid of. And I really don't want it here. So, I have to balance the risk of Petey being an active shedder v. the joy of bringing him home.

But, the bottom line is: Petey is great. That's the important thing. Everything else is logistics.
