Forum rules and no-advertising policy

As a participant on this forum, it is your responsibility to know and follow our rules. Please read this message in its entirety.

Board Rules

1. You’re responsible for what you say.
As outlined in Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, The Chronicle of the Horse and its affiliates, as well Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd., the developers of vBulletin, are not legally responsible for statements made in the forums.

This is a public forum viewed by a wide spectrum of people, so please be mindful of what you say and who might be reading it—details of personal disputes are likely better handled privately. While posters are legally responsible for their statements, the moderators may in their discretion remove or edit posts that violate these rules. Users have the ability to modify or delete their own messages after posting, but administrators generally will not delete posts, threads or accounts upon request.

Outright inflammatory, vulgar, harassing, malicious or otherwise inappropriate statements and criminal charges unsubstantiated by a reputable news source or legal documentation will not be tolerated and will be dealt with at the discretion of the moderators.

Credible threats of suicide will be reported to the police along with identifying user information at our disposal, in addition to referring the user to suicide helpline resources such as 1-800-SUICIDE or 1-800-273-TALK.

2. Conversations in horse-related forums should be horse-related.
The forums are a wonderful source of information and support for members of the horse community. While it’s understandably tempting to share information or search for input on other topics upon which members might have a similar level of knowledge, members must maintain the focus on horses.

3. Keep conversations productive, on topic and civil.
Discussion and disagreement are inevitable and encouraged; personal insults, diatribes and sniping comments are unproductive and unacceptable. Whether a subject is light-hearted or serious, keep posts focused on the current topic and of general interest to other participants of that thread. Utilize the private message feature or personal email where appropriate to address side topics or personal issues not related to the topic at large.

4. No advertising in the discussion forums.
Posts in the discussion forums directly or indirectly advertising horses, jobs, items or services for sale or wanted will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Use of the private messaging feature or email addresses obtained through users’ profiles for unsolicited advertising is not permitted.

Company representatives may participate in discussions and answer questions about their products or services, or suggest their products on recent threads if they fulfill the criteria of a query. False "testimonials" provided by company affiliates posing as general consumers are not appropriate, and self-promotion of sales, ad campaigns, etc. through the discussion forums is not allowed.

Paid advertising is available on our classifieds site and through the purchase of banner ads. The tightly monitored Giveaways forum permits free listings of genuinely free horses and items available or wanted (on a limited basis). Items offered for trade are not allowed.

Advertising Policy Specifics
When in doubt of whether something you want to post constitutes advertising, please contact a moderator privately in advance for further clarification. Refer to the following points for general guidelines:

Horses – Only general discussion about the buying, leasing, selling and pricing of horses is permitted. If the post contains, or links to, the type of specific information typically found in a sales or wanted ad, and it’s related to a horse for sale, regardless of who’s selling it, it doesn’t belong in the discussion forums.

Stallions – Board members may ask for suggestions on breeding stallion recommendations. Stallion owners may reply to such queries by suggesting their own stallions, only if their horse fits the specific criteria of the original poster. Excessive promotion of a stallion by its owner or related parties is not permitted and will be addressed at the discretion of the moderators.

Services – Members may use the forums to ask for general recommendations of trainers, barns, shippers, farriers, etc., and other members may answer those requests by suggesting themselves or their company, if their services fulfill the specific criteria of the original post. Members may not solicit other members for business if it is not in response to a direct, genuine query.

Products – While members may ask for general opinions and suggestions on equipment, trailers, trucks, etc., they may not list the specific attributes for which they are in the market, as such posts serve as wanted ads.

Event Announcements – Members may post one notification of an upcoming event that may be of interest to fellow members, if the original poster does not benefit financially from the event. Such threads may not be “bumped” excessively. Premium members may post their own notices in the Event Announcements forum.

Charities/Rescues – Announcements for charitable or fundraising events can only be made for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organizations. Special exceptions may be made, at the moderators’ discretion and direction, for board-related events or fundraising activities in extraordinary circumstances.

Occasional posts regarding horses available for adoption through IRS-registered horse rescue or placement programs are permitted in the appropriate forums, but these threads may be limited at the discretion of the moderators. Individuals may not advertise or make announcements for horses in need of rescue, placement or adoption unless the horse is available through a recognized rescue or placement agency or government-run entity or the thread fits the criteria for and is located in the Giveaways forum.

5. Do not post copyrighted photographs unless you have purchased that photo and have permission to do so.

6. Respect other members.
As members are often passionate about their beliefs and intentions can easily be misinterpreted in this type of environment, try to explore or resolve the inevitable disagreements that arise in the course of threads calmly and rationally.

If you see a post that you feel violates the rules of the board, please click the “alert” button (exclamation point inside of a triangle) in the bottom left corner of the post, which will alert ONLY the moderators to the post in question. They will then take whatever action, or no action, as deemed appropriate for the situation at their discretion. Do not air grievances regarding other posters or the moderators in the discussion forums.

Please be advised that adding another user to your “Ignore” list via your User Control Panel can be a useful tactic, which blocks posts and private messages by members whose commentary you’d rather avoid reading.

7. We have the right to reproduce statements made in the forums.
The Chronicle of the Horse may copy, quote, link to or otherwise reproduce posts, or portions of posts, in print or online for advertising or editorial purposes, if attributed to their original authors, and by posting in this forum, you hereby grant to The Chronicle of the Horse a perpetual, non-exclusive license under copyright and other rights, to do so.

8. We reserve the right to enforce and amend the rules.
The moderators may delete, edit, move or close any post or thread at any time, or refrain from doing any of the foregoing, in their discretion, and may suspend or revoke a user’s membership privileges at any time to maintain adherence to the rules and the general spirit of the forum. These rules may be amended at any time to address the current needs of the board.

Please see our full Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more information.

  • UGH!!! This is horrible showing that video. I am truly suprised FOX aired that. My husband, along with hundreds of other surgeons are over there to do the best they can to save lives of these brave sailors, soldiers, airmen and marines. I cannot imagine what these men and women fighting are going through. People PLEASE support this in every way, because I can tell you, any anti-war sentiment is received as negative to the "Troops" even when people say they do not support the war but support the troops. No body WANTS war but they are there for a purpose beyond many peoples compreshension and knowledge. War is a horrible thing, but there are so many men and women who truly believe this is a good cause and are willing to risk their lives for it AND AMERICA and the rest of the FREE world.

I have not posted on this or at all for a while, because the incredible and overwhelming emotions I am having since my husband, brother in law and friends have been deployed.

I just wish my husband was home tonight helping me with our nightime barn duties. I hope they all are home soon.

    This is tough for everyone.

    • JustBay, best wishes for your husband. Which branch is he in? My brother is a flight surgeon (well, he's not actually a surgeon, but they call the AF docs that I guess). Maybe they know each other!

      • God bless your loves ones and friends, JustBay and dogchushu! My SO's son flew his first mission last night.

I spoke with my SO this evening and he had seen two deployment flight out today. He was so touched by the flight crew, which had to fight to BE the crew. They said that all the crews want to do their part. They had welcoming signs for the soldiers, as well as small tokens.

I'm hoping to be able to be part of a deployment next weekend. I won't be able to actually be part of seeing them onto the plane, but evidently I can be a there for the final papers/manifest/whatever stuff. So, I can see the soldiers.

We're also planning on baking cookies for his son and friends.

I'm so darn proud of being an American! I was in tears tonite, as the National Anthem was being played prior to my son's hockey game.

I don't watch Fox either. My granddaddy did, but he passed, and dad seems to like it as well, and I happened to be in the room when that particular piece of footage was aired.
Fox News is all about ratings, and being outrageous and I try my damnedest to stay away from it.

I just wasn't sure if the airing of it violated the convention as well, and was quite curious about it.

About an hour ago I saw Greta on and she said Fox was not going to air the footage (at this point anyway).

                    • Photos of the POWs are posted front and center on the Al-Jaseera Television website. I think this is disgusting!

It was futher disgusting that they either killed the other Amrican POWs or just left them there for dead.

Tonight one of our service groups flew an humanitarian mission. A soldier was shot through the hip and stomach. He was flown to a triage medical unit in Kuwait for emergency surgery surgery. His life was saved.... He was an Iraqi soldier!!!

Obviously the Hussein regime did not feel like they should provide the best of care like we did... Perhaps our soldiers who were laying out on the floor didn't deserve medical treatment in their minds because we are infidels or imperialists, or Al-Copone like (I have heard them all). Bull Hockey!

One of the POWs is a woman. 30 years old and is a mechanic based in Texas. I am so very scared for her. Iraqis treat women horribly. A POW will be treated even worse.

My prayers are with them all...

Taryn, have your husband email his co-worker this website. It's the Federal Flag Code:

                          http://www.bcpl.net/~etowner/flagcode.html

                          Section k reads:

"The Flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning."

Burning in a Dignified way is what I was taught to do by my father, a WWII veteran.

If people do not have the facilities to burn the flag, there are many companies that will take your worn flag and properly dispose of it free of charge. Simply do a Google search on "flag disposal."

                            • Did anyone catch that idiot producer that slandered the president on the award's ceremony last night? I heard it on the radio and was completely disgusted. I also heard a speech by an actor (though I'm not sure which one) which was also anti-war (as really everyone is) but said with tact and eloquence, hoping for a speedy resolution and safety for the troops. It just showed how ignorant and theatrical ardent protesters are - but I was glad to hear the disagreement from the crowd.

It looks like possibly today, the confirmation of weapons of mass destruction will be made. Big surprise, it will be interesting to see the response from France, Russia, and Germany. Maybe they will they just keep silent as they have so far. No more french wine for me.

I am very concerned about POW's and our troops as they approach Baghdad, I fear the weapons of mass destruction they may face.

Fox is disgusting for airing that footage. I was hoping they would have class. Wrong!!!!!!

It would be wonderful if the news networks would stop covering these protests. What be the point if they got no air time? Yes, they have the right to protest, but stop showing it on the news. They will go away with out publicity.

News is news. TV news is already aimed at the lowest common denominator. I'd prefer they at least keep showing events in our country.

I actually am very concerned about the news reports of the war, so far. I heard a reporter refer to 'heavy casualties' in fighting that was 'more than expected'. The idea that there was going to be mass surrender the minute we went into Iraq is completely unreasonable. The idea that ten casualties is 'heavy' indicates that people are going to be completely unprepared for the realites yet to come.

CNN took a poll that said 44% think casualties will be less than 100. Hopefully, some of that number is more of a 'sports fan' attitude, like the fans of the 16th seed thinking they are going to knock off number one but the idea that casualties will even be in three figures is almost Pollyanna-ish.

                                    • i wasn;t going to comment on the war, but i couldn't help being totally awed by a report made by CNN. A few nights back when the bombing was going on one of the reporters were standing on the other side of the river across from the military buildings being hit. He reported that quite a few Iraqis came out onto the street to watch the bombing. One of the shop keepers brought a broom and was sweeping the walk way in front of his shop. There was no fear in these people, there was only confidence in where the bombs were being directed. Personally, i think the Iraqi people are waiting liberation. To the protesters, i realize we have the right to free speach. But if the Iraqi people are not standing in the streets of Bagdad protesting why are other people doing it. I think if the people of Iraq were behind Sudam they would protest in the streets, hell i'm sure old Sudam would encourage it, then he could show the injustice on tv. Not any one of us has the right to take up a cause unless we know directly about that issue. I listened to a group of Iraqis being interviewed in Michigan, all were men in a mosque and every one of them had relatives or friends who died because of Sudam. Hence their reason for going to the United States. It bothers me that some of these protest groups are organized by professionals. Yes PAID professional organizers, that have nothing to do with the universities or schools. I encourage people to get the true facts from people who actually know the truth of what goes on there. Only than can we make informed dicisions on Iraq. Hearsay evidence can be a terrible thing, and high school students looking for the day off of school, should be made to return to class and get the facts. Study the middle east, become aquainted with their way of life. One girl they interviewed was out protesting and didn't know where Iraq was. This is not the Vietnam war, it is a different world now, than the 70's. We have different threats, and some of the larger countries of the world now have different responsibilities. Please don't think this is a war about oil, it has nothing to do with it. But what this war does, is lay the ground rules for further conflicts. Hopefully, other countries in the middle east will resign themselves to finding a peaceful solution to their problems (israel and pakistan), if they know they will have to answer to a larger world power, than maybe they will double their efforts in finding peace. This is just one Canadians opinion, but there is nothing worse the large groups of people protesting about something, because so and so said......ack it makes me crazy....

I also heard a speech by an actor (though I'm not sure which one) which was also anti-war (as really everyone is) but said with tact and eloquence, hoping for a speedy resolution and safety for the troops. It just showed how ignorant and theatrical ardent protesters are - but I was glad to hear the disagreement from the crowd.<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

I heard an excerpt of his frothy tirade on NPR late last night as I was driving back to Kansas from South Dakota. That man was an embarrassment to his profession.

"Middle America" was watching the war yesterday. As I stopped for fuel and food along I-29 from noon until I got home at 2:00 a.m. I encountered young and old alike focused on t.v.'s and had ears turned to radios in the shops where I stopped. Saw lovely flag displays along the interstate and not one single "No War" slogan.

Bless our troops and their families.
